  1. I wonder if they aren't smoother with a heavier flywheel because I had a couple of engines fully balanced and although they were smoother overall, they had a rough patch at a bit over 3000. I believe the TR4A had the heaviest flywheel and wonder if it helped with the rough patch.

  2. The best place for Molyslip is in sidescreen steering boxes. It actually makes a difference you can feel. I've got one of two huge tins of Graphite grease that I'm slowing emptying into my various nipples. I got them when a local RAF depot closed amd it seems a pity to waste them. :)

  3. I had a lot of trouble with Lucas pattern coils amd that included wrong part numbers so that the one I was using was drawing 7 Amps instead a bit under 3 Amps. It was 6 Volt labelled 12. I suggest that you put an ammeter in series with the supply and check how much current it's drawing.

The most reliable coils I've used are Accuspark's general purpose ones on EBay for £13.95, but Bosch VW Beatle ones are excellent too.

  4. IMO red is an impossible colour and black would be a better option. Only one thing worse than red is two reds clashing. Rich is doing a red leather Rolls-Royce 20/25 by Gurney Nutting ATM if you'd like a picture and have an air sick bag handy.

We use Boyriven motor Wilton in everything except some R-Rs & Bs where we can't get a colour and the extra pile doesn't get in the way, Then we use 100% Wool Belgian Wilton. These are the best and even Belgian Wilton is only £60 a metre, so it's worth it for how much nicer it looks. In my TR we've stuck to rubber mats in the front with underlay that can be thrown away if it gets soaked, but everywhere else is top quality wool and it looks lovely, it dries out fine and I haven't found it stains.

We used John Skinner seats, they look okay but didn't fit terribly well and are nothing like having them made properly by a craftsman, which is what I'm going to do with the Healey. It's not entirely Skinner's fault and many say he's the best, but seat sizes vary, spring bases vary and building stuff from patterns isn't the same as making patterns from seats. All the rest of the car was done with 1.7mm Brooklands hide from the Real Hide Company (Connolleys) on marine ply. It looks pretty good.

  5. I set my jets to 38 thou below the bridge using a depth mic and then adjusted them with a pair of colourtunes. I had to raise them slightly to get to a Bunsen blue flame.

This is the correct jet position and provided the float heights are correct (7/16" on H6) the butterflies are synced and the Pistons aren't sticking, the car will run as it should. It's that simple.

  6. I think most old engines run weak on the current fuel, which is very different to what we had way back. My Healey was particularly bad at running on till I put it on a rolling road. Hasn't stopped it completely, but it's much faster and much better. I think it's worth having done. My Bentley was miles out too, just have to get the TR done now.

  7. Driving a TR at night is one of the joys of owning the car, its sounds so different, the damp air usually makes it feel more responsive, returning from a trip or club pub meet is the motivation for going, flat cap, Barbour, scarf, blower on, lovely warm knees and feet, smells of Herefordshire wafting in, no traffic on the Mordiford road between Ross and Hereford, the lovely sweeping bends that tighten to try to catch you out, the deep throb of the 4 banger and flicking rev counter needle as I keep the revs up with the overdrive switch TR motoring at its best,

Don't just use it on sunny days!

By the way I have repro tripods with low rated H4 halogen (small Jap alternator) and they are brilliant almost as good as our Mini Clubman All4

That's done it! I'm in tears of emotion now. :)

  8. Lucas lights are all bloody terrible! I was out in my Healey last night with sealed beams that were about half as good as a Zippo lighter. I had a Silver Shadow with Quartz halogen bulb that lit the tops of trees beautifully, flared so badly you couldn't drive in a fog and shone about two car lengths ahead. The TR has some modern light units with standard bulbs and they are almost safe. Could be Wipac.

I got 770s on the Bentley and they're terrible too. :(

  9. We've had them done on the six cylinder Bentley engines when we've had special manifolds made to try and reduce the heat they otherwise radiate. It does make a difference, but it's very expensive at £300 each for two manifolds, three cylinders each.

TBH most six branch manifolds make barely a measureable difference to the power output, so I don't see the point. We only get them made because we're fitting a Silver Cloud engine in a MKVI or R type and the manifolds can't be used.
