Just possible that it might be the union where the fuel pipe joins the tank, Flash. The olive on my 3 somehow worked loose this summer, resulting in a steady drip and 'orrible pong of petrol. Solution was to anneal the olive and then screw the assembly back in again, using plumber's tape to seal. It has been fine since (touch wood!).
About 3 years ago I had occasion to sling out my sieve-like tank; I got a replacement from Moss, slosh-sealed it and re-fitted the new one without too much sweat. The worst thing was re-aligning the various components which marry the tank via the filler hose to the quick-release fuel cap.
