No I appreciate the observation. That said, I did remove the switch, connect the wires (which turned on the lights) and then fully depressed the plunger. Lights stayed on
-
Hi stuart, it's definitely the switch as I joined the wires and the lights came on. I ordered the one you suggested and installed it - but the brake lights stayed on! No amount of fiddling could make it work. Wonder what I did wrong - swapped wires, made sure it was not depressed, etc...bit of a mystery

Ok, good news then. I'll get to the car and check it all out.
-
Thanks Stuart - just checked but the website says not compatible with a TR4A 66?
Will go over the car tomorrow. Manufacture was Dec 65
-
Thanks will give it a go....is the pressure switch on the pedal an electric or does it screw into the brake line? I've got a 66 4A. Or, in the engine well near the master cylinder?

All other indicators work, headlights, etc. Just had someone tell me (two actually) that my car is running without brake lights. Very sudden. I haven't begun to check anything, but I was hoping for some guidance as the best place to start. Would that it would be so simple as a fuse (fingers crossed). I am terrible at Lucas electrics, hence the naive starter question.

Optima Batteries, hands down.

Good suggestion!
thanks,

I have my eye on it. Will take the car out again this weekend and we will see what happens...fingers crossed. The last thing I want is petrol all over my newly painted engine!
-
Yesterday I took the car out and at low speed (2nd gear) I suddenly had a smell of petrol in the cabin. It went away as I started to drive. After 45 min I parked the car, and today popped the bonnet and noticed petrol around the copper pipe leaving the pump to the carbs. A small rag produced some from a drip - not a big one. Almost seemed like a brief "spray" and it stopped.
I got out a wrench and gave the union bolt a 1/8 turn clockwise. I did not want to over torque it. Started the car and no immediate drip. No more problems on the ride back.
How much can I tighten this? Does it just "vibrate" loose after a number of miles or is there something more serious at work?

Does anyone make an alloy firewall?

Thanks - I have a hunch I will resurface my current discs and refit my refurbished calipers (done at Biggred). I'm not a high speed driver but I did finally source Mintex 1144. Called the distributor direct and they sold them to me with a retail discount of about £50-ish plus VAT. Expecting next day delivery (today).......
-
I have twin pot Girling calipers - what specs do I need to know for pad sizes with Mintex 1144? And, where is the best place to get them? Many thanks
-
Thanks for that. Wonder why everything is still advertised on eBay? I may choose to have my existing discs cleaned and resurfaced. But I will explore Moss as well.. Thanks for the pad suggestion.
-
Ok, have been told to get Brembo discs because they are true and don't warp. They are all over eBay. Until you call. NO ONE has any Brembo discs for a TR4A (08.1629.10) nor any idea when they will ever see them again. EVERYONE is waiting for a manufacturing run out of the factory. Except me.
I know they are Italian and it's a mess there, etc etc.
a) should I keep trying and does anyone have a source?
should I chuck it? and go with a better (more expensive) set of discs, like ......(brand names welcome...)

Thanks Roger - the garage seems to favour EBC GreenStuff - what's the difference in brake feel/power/fad etc? also in crud on the wheels?
-
My garage sent a set of used "twin pot" girling calipers to be rebuilt on my behalf - so that the car doesn't sit there for a week or two taking up space while the work is being done outside. my photos of the calipers currently on the car show what appears to be one large pot with a piston on either side - is this what is meant by "twin pot"? I've got a 4A and I assume I will not have four pistons and four pads on the disc on each wheel, but rather two pads and two pistons on each disc. Am I over-thinking this?
-
Sorry - why do I want to fit a stop bolt? If the bonnet pops up, aren't I happy and not going to tug it anymore?
-
Thanks guys - I rang the garage and they have (nicely) reminded me of some additional work to be done, so seems like the car will indeed be in there for the time well $pent!
-
Checked out both; Bigg Red sounds like the best for a (red) paint job. Many thanks.
-
No problem with the time - just unsure of the space at the garage for about a two week period of time....
-
Yes, gave them a call; a good answer although 7-ish working days to turn around which leaves my car out of action (or in Acton) for a while
-
Yes, I know I could buy a pair and paint them, but the thought of seeing the paint flake off eventually frightens me. Does anyone know where to source a new set of brake calipers for a TR4A in red? I know the Roadster Factory has them (on an exchange basis) but I was hoping they might also be available locally.......
Suddenly, no brake lights! where do I go from here...

Ok, I'm the idiot. I had not depressed the plunger far enough on the new switch. Thought I did. Once reconnected and up against the pedal lever very tight, it works. I had left too much slack previously. Problem solved. PS No idea what the extra gray wire does (or did) but may find that out down the road!
