  1. I am now beginning to wonder what tank i actually have in the 5!.

It definately takes no more than 40 lts, which would seem to be 15lts

short of a standard 5s tank capacity.

    Thankyou Stan for the link,

    cheers,

    Laurence

  2. Hi All,

I have never been very happy with the 5s petrol tank capacity,-it brims at around 40 litres,or 8 gallons in old money,

with 3 hungry webers to feed it doesnt give much more range than 200 miles.

Having completed a number of continental trips i have learnt to always carry a spare 5lts if things get a little

desperate,-and they hav,- on more than one occasion.

Tank capacity has loomed larger in my mind in recent weeks because i have had confirmation of my entry to

do the 10CR in September,- essentially completeing a round trip of Alpine Europe in 3 days with fellow

Triumph enthusiasts,- CT organise it and the mileage is likely to be in excess of 2000.

My question is :,are larger petrol tanks available and 2, what was the original capacity of a TR5 petrol tank?,

    cheers,

    Laurence

  3. Ash,

    Thanks for the information.

Could I ask what you use to clean off the old paint etc from the plate, Ace label, and the numbers themselves, and how you get the numbers off and re-attached?

If I do buy new, which companies would you recommend - I have made found via an internet search a company called Framptons in Waterlooville - do you have any experience of this company?

    Thanks again,

    Rod

    Rod,

Framptons ACE plates are top quality,-they are not cheap, but then, you get what you pay for..

    cheers,

    Laurence.

ps i have no connection with the firm other than as a satisfied customer, my car is featured on the web site,-the TR5

  4. Hi All,

I am in the process of buying a TR6 and one of the changes from standard is to run

the car without bumpers. This would be fine on a later CR car because the number

plate light is set into the valance but on a CP car its a different matter.

Any suggestions appreciated, but would say i am not a fan of LEDs and would

    prefer a amore discreet solution,

    cheers,

    Laurence

  5. I am no expert on mechanics/electrics and cant pretend that i get my hands dirty like

many on here but it does strike me that TRs really benefit from regular useage and

really do suffer from the occasional usege that most seem to experience these days

-ironic really given the copius quantities of rust preventors thats lavished on them.

As Roger states, they are about and i am sure there are TRs in regular use, maybe they are just thin on

the ground in this corner of Devon.

Maybe because values generally have gone up owners are more precious about their TRs and feel

disinclined to use them. Given that contempory vehicles are just depreciating money pits i will

stick to my two legs and TR5!,

thanks for your all your responses,

    Laurence

  6. Having just completed a round trip of 800+ miles, visiting a number of TR emporiums en route, in my 5, it occured to me that in

the past 12 months i have completed over 8000 miles. Most of the mileage was on uncluttered continental roads last summer

and included classic Le Mans, luckily, without any major problems. I would be interested to hear from others, in particular owners of

5s, who have covered similar mileages

I consider my car a daily driver, though i do walk to work, and receives no special attention apart from regular changes of fluids.

Its worth mentioning that during my recent excursion, covering the north west of England down to the Fens thence to Windsor

and return to the west country i saw not one triumph let alone a TR!,

    cheers,

    Laurence

  7. Having scaled the infamous Stelvio Pass(just under 9000ft) on a couple of occasions with my triple webbered

5 i can report no loss of power/rough running on either occasion.

However there is little doubt, from my experience, that fuel consumption is higher when compared

to the PI equiped 6s i have had in the past.

  8. Hi Reinaldo,

Having visited Brasil on a number of occasions last year i am

intrigued to know how many other TRs are resident in your country,

i spent most of my time in Goiania and never saw a Triumph ,let alone

    a TR !.

Lovely job on your 4,- it must cause quite a bit of interest whenever you

    out and about,

    all the best,

    Laurence

  9. Monty,

Even assuming the front bolts and rear hand tightened bolts are fully

home the tr structure will ,from my experience on the poorly maintained

roads of Torbay, creak at times, just make sure the bolts are tight as possible,

    best,

    Laurence

  10. Hi All,

I recently stumbled across a dedicated TR5 site

entitled tr5passion.com, it is a French site, but

has a good gallery of pictures and the chap who

coordinates it is approachable and is on the look out

for more pics,-well worth a visit!,

    best,

    Laurence

  11. David,

I had a similar problem when i first bought the 5.

As has been mentioned the internals of brass are just

not strong enough and therefore the steel solution is the only

    long term solution.

Certainly the gearbox over the past 18 months, since this modification,

    has been fine,

    hope you are well,

    Laurence

  12. Hi Laurence

I went last year and will go again in Sept. GREAT event, the town is crawling with classics and the access to the cars and the paddock is a bonus. The North London group supported Peerless (shameless NLG plug  ) will be there so worth the trip alone after the showing at Le Mans.

Good drive down and great roads locally. The event rally the day before is expensive but gives you VIP parking for the whole week end in the town square which evens it out.

Quite a few UK reg TRs last time, some even racing in addition to Peerless. See you there ?

    Race Car

    Street Parked

    Hi Mike,

Most definately!, i am now fired up with this event, it might prove to be one of my better impulsive

    decisions!.

I was attracted to the drive down to Angouleme, it really is so much better driving the 5 through France

than the cluttered roads here in uk.

Last year ,when i took the 5 to the Stelvio and other wonderful roads in the Dolomites, there was

quite a crowd heading for Angouleme via sunny Portsmouth,so it struck me at the time it would be worth a visit.

    Counting the days,best,

    Laurence

  13. Hi Guy,

Likewise, it was good to see you at the classic!.

My time at the track was a little less than hoped..

, but then i had the lovely Aurelia to consider , to be

fair, she seemed to enjoy the experience!.

Angouleme was just impulse, but any excuse to drive

the 5 on uncluttered roads in France has got to be done!.

The deal is a package trip through a company called Grandstand

Motor sports for five days all in, hopefully should be good!.

    Will let you know ,

    all the best,

    L
