  1. Hi All

To quote Mad Zero it's good enough for Doyle, if memory serves me right Bodie drove the Dolly Sprint and Doyle drove a TR7 before they went to fords. It's a shame Leyland never realised the potential of the tv series as most of us would have been playing with model Sprints and TR7'S in the playground instead of Capri's.

    Regards Rob

Doyle was the main driver of the TR7 but the Dolomite seems to have been shared more or less equally.

  2. If we are considering bikes, I would agree with the Bonneville (T120). I was fortunate enough to acquire a rebuilt one many years ago, but extremely disappointed to find I couldn't ride it safely due to the seat height - very wobbly at standstill. Reluctantly had to let it go and couldn't bear to swap to the less aestheticly styled US version which would have been more suited to my inside leg measurement!

Hey I reckon with skill, and a rather tenuous link, I could get my beloved bike a mention here too...

    Triumph - Acclaim - Honda - CB900FA! Result! :D

  3. Hi MZ,

That's a kind and generous offer, but in the nicest possible way I wouldn't dream of it . . .

Tom's happy that his labours are going to a good home, and no of course I wasn't suggesting that you took advantage !!

    It's a damn good 7, you'll enjoy it. Have fun !

    Cheers,

    Alec

    Ok cool.

  4. Well, who's a lucky bunny then . . .

WFH is by no means the best fixed head 2 litre 7 in the country, but it is certainly one of the soundest and best finished. The better examples are, for sure, counted in two figures and not three. Probably only in handfuls.

I have to say I'm not happy - at that price I'd have preferred to have bought it back from Tom and used it myself. I know how many hundreds of hours, thousands of pounds, and blood sweat and tears, have gone into what was a very good and original car when we bought it. But Tom is a man of his word, an increasingly rare commodity, and he agreed a deal with you. Of course I can respect that, c'est la vie.

You will look after it. Enjoy.

    Cheers,

    Alec

You make it sound like I took advantage Alec - it was Tom's price and I gave him plenty of opportunities to think about it/back out ...even after the money had changed hands! The last thing I want to do is upset people (I really mean that!) - if you feel that strongly I will sell it to you for the amount I paid Tom without quibble - there are things I'm not 100% happy with the car so I really don't mind - it was offered to me, it was the least rusty one I'd seen, so I bought it. It hold no special place in my heart (yet) it's just an old Triumph to me! It's up to you - can't say fairer than that can I?

  5. Well for those who are interested in hearing the end of the story I ended up buying WFH302X the ex-Pringle 2.0FHC which, as many of you already know, was recently de-rotted, fitted with numerous upgrades and (at enormous cost) refinished in gleaming pearlecent black ...including the engine bay!

Ok so I would've preferred a car in a standard TR colour but this was the only TR7 within my price range with absolutely no rust (yes really!) so it just had to be bought! There is plenty for me to do (like fit an engine!) but this will be no bad thing because it will give me the opportunity to get to know the car properly and attend to all those niggling little jobs one tends to put off and fit all the pain in the arse stuff (clutch, timing chain etc) with ease. Yay!

So, thanks for a great deal Tom - much appreciated matey! :D

(p.s. Your Dad tried to sell me your alloy wheels - make sure you sting him for a few beers! LOL!)

  6. Not exactly sure what you mean by re-cut or if they would do that but I had a set of original alloys re-furbed and re-lacquered by Pristine Wheels in Woburn Sands (Beds) about a year ago. They seem to have done a good job so far except that their balancing wasn't the best and I had to get that done again. Then again that seems to be notoriously difficult to get right on the original alloys.

They are part of the "Fred the Tread" organisation and I beleive they have branches all over so there may well be one even nearer to you.

Thanks for that I'll follow it up.

What I meant by re-cut was having the outer rims diamond cut on a lathe so they could be polished - the inner 'hub' will be painted.

  7. The alloys and the tyres are separate - or more accurately the Yokos are on standard 7 alloys, whilst the sprint alloys have clapped out tyres still fitted. Therefore available separately. But no, I don't need any more standard alloys !

Avatar - it self-destructed a long time ago. Possibly a good thing.

    Cheers,

    Alec

As you may be aware I'm seeing Tom tomorrow so I'll get back to you about the rims in due course - feel free to email me a pic & price though! :)

  8. The Dolly Sprint alloys are 13" x 5.5", same as the TR7 wheel, with the same pcd.

There is a surplus set of 5 good ones of these too in my garage; and a set of almost new 185/70 Yokohamas !

    Cheers,

    Alec

Probably too expensive for me then Alec! Was hoping to use the tyres I get with the car ( :) ) I'm after so looking for just the rims ...unless you're interested in a set of TR7 alloys in exchange?

PS. It's about time you sorted out your avatar dude!

  9. I've not seen many TR7's fitted with Dolomite Sprint alloys but they look good on the TR (kinda poor-man's Allycat!) so is there some other reason why this is not popular? ...or is it just that everyone's upping their rim diameter to fit bigger brakes?

    I am right in thinking they're 13" and a direct fit on a TR7 aren't I?

  10. As it states in the thread post really.

Serenity could do with a good makeover & a few rough spots filled, any guidelines to cost & recommendations for the SW area (EX2).

Don't know how feasible £2K is & how much value it would on her.

    Any input welcomed.

£2K would be conservative for a top-notch paint job and it wouldn't add much actual 'money value' to the car ...but it would get a sale over the next guy's TR7.

If you're doing it for yourself (i.e. you're keeping the car a good while longer) then go for it! :)

  11. did you get sorted with tr then mad zero when can we see pics or are you still in planning stage
I'm pretty much (99.9%) sorted with a really cracking TR but will wait until it's actually in my workshop before I do the showing off bit ...just in case! I'm putting together a little website too so there'll be plenty to look at.

BTW I'm enjoying the Triumph scene a lot more than I did the Lotus scene - much more friendly! :)

  12. I'm thinking of fitting aftermarket alloys (Superlites probably) to a TR7 - what size/offset/PCD do I need if I want to use the original 185/70x13 tyres on them? The car has standard sized brake rotors.

    Cheers, Buzz.

  13. Cheers mate - and yes, I'll be hanging in there to the bitter end! :)

I should've mentioned in my original post that there have been several people who were totally up front about their vehicles and saved me a journey - don't want to imply that all who responded were time-wasters, far from it!

  14. I've viewed 5 cars during the last two weeks - all of them were advertised as 'rust free' - and all were rusty. Why did they lie? Did they think that when I see the vehicle I would suddenly not be worried about the rust? Bearing in mind I spoke to all the vendors on the telephone outlining exactly what I am looking for (a rust free TR7) - I find it very annoying when I spend hours hacking up and down the M11 only to be confronted by another rotten car!

While I'm at it I shall also have a rant about the line "...well they're all rusty mate, it's what they're like!..." Utter rubbish! Plenty of people restore/renovate these things - there's several totally rust-free examples in this club for starters! This is all before we even start to talk about the price btw! Anyway, thanks for listening - rant over! :)

  15. The blue FHC is the TR7 sprint restored by John Gibson, as Steve says it is a nice car, the wheels are 13 inch Superlites with graphite centres and polished rims. It now has a set of ultra rare TR7 Spider alloys on but the Superlites will be back on soon.

Cheers for the info - are Superlites a type of Minilites or a similar wheel manufactured by another company? I ask because genuine Minilites have always been expensive (designed for competition) and I'm mainly interested in the look so I'd be happy with cheaper 'copies' that just look like Minilites. I imagine that a set of genuine Minilites would be £400+ ...which I just don't have! :(

  16. I've actually just been through the 'buying my first TR7' stage and it was immediately apparent that the No.1 thing to look for/avoid is rust!. Just about anything else is DIY'able and freely available but unless you work in a bodyshop you'll be very poor by the time you've cured a rotten one!

In my old Lotus club they used to say; "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Esprit!" - I think this could apply to the TR7 too!

Good luck with your search mate, be patient and willing to travel - good TR7's are out there ..loads of 'em! ;)

  17. The very early steel wheels actually only had black plastic centre caps that look very similar to those in the picture, the rings could certainly just be a later add-on as suggested by Stevie-A.

    Gary

Yeah I'm familiar with the trim-rings I got some from Halfords for my Mk1 Granada years ago (can theystill be bought in the UK I wonder?) - thanks for clearing up the centre hub bit though, so the black centres were a seperate moulding then. I didn't realise.

Okay then, another option I can consider - paint the wheels black, fit the black centre hubs then fit trim-rings. Or I could paint the factory alloys black and polish the outer rim and highlights I suppose? Hmmm...
