    Have you mis-timed the cam?

These engines are non-interference so the valves & pistons won't meet if you get the timing wrong.

So you can really do one of two simple errors - time using no1 exhaust valve or set it so that no1 inlet is fully open say 105 degrees btdc rather than after. (105 is an example as many non-standard cams will have different numbers to 105)

+1 check the compression, especially if it appears to be spinning over slightly quicker than normal

  2. Hi,

Looking to replace the core plugs on my block and want to go for stainless but none of the usual suspects seem to offer one. Found a supplier that will sell them separately but needs a list of sizes, can anyone point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

As Bob says should be ok.

If it’s any help I won the TR Register championship on a standard Triumph crankshaft with -20 mains and big ends ground to -60 ( yup).

With the crankshaft throw being offset ground on the big ends to increase the length of stroke. ( hence -60). The crankshaft was lightened and balanced and Nitrited also. The car won the championship the year after also after the bearings were replaced (as the norm with race cars.)
I did use a 6000 rev limit ( self imposed) with a 6500 rev limiter in case of “ red mist”, maybe you are thinking of increasing the rev limit. ?

    Mick Richards

Oh!…-60 shells ? Massey Ferguson is your friend.

    Mick,

How does this work in practice, is the stroke increased at BDC, rod length & piston stock.

In std you are right however many have been skimmed and many have modified cams I have seen contact made but not my work

I can vouch for this, when I stripped my race engine after it's 3rd failure you could see slight marking on 2 of the pistons

  5. Hi,

Trying to identify & find out the rate on my rear springs, they're red, 9.5" long and 15mm dia, only other ref on them is CHR 65 which has been hand written. Fronts are TT4102, ride height is fine but looking to go stiffer but I would like to know where I'm starting from.

    Many thanks

    Hi Mike

they are going to run up the engine and an initial RR set up. They are also going to swap the engines over for me.

Bob I am afraid I don’t have that level of detail as I don’t have your skills I let the experts do what they know. It’s a Burgess race head.
the block is machined parallel to crank and the liners matched so doing away with fig 8

    Hi Hamish,

Looking good! Interested that they have done away with F8 gaskets, something I've not heard of before, did they use just a gasket sealant?

  7. Thanks for the reply John.  The first broke on my third test session on the new engine, just above the mounting, broke up and wrapped itself round the cam sprocket, causing the valve timing to jump, the second was a different material, again broke at the mounting but stayed in one piece and wore through the the cam cover spraying oil everywhere during qualifying at Snetterton last August . The oil pump drive actually failed after the cam chain had been repaired 10 minutes into qualifying at Donnington last year.
