  1. I Had a similar problem and had the tank out as I was fishing out the last of the rubber 'blobs' after the old fuel lines and the rubber tank to deck hose got eaten by E5/E10 etc. Hoses are all R9 now and Moss had a deal on TR6 pattern mild steel tanks (they are all the same size, just different holes for PI Vs carbs). That was 7 years ago, still going strong. Original design and material

  2. Hi Rob

Nice car ! Welcome to the forum, lots of help and advise here. 2nd RobH comment, make contact with your local group, you're bound to find a great butch of like minded members who will welcome you into the group where you can enjoy your TR to the full. Enjoy !

  3. Hi Pinks

Thanks for posting this, what a great story and what an achievement. He really does need to be congratulated. Looking at the route and the mileage it a job well done and almost no trouble from the TR4 (as to be expected)

Money raised for a good cause as well, Guide Dogs are quite close to my heart. Moby and I raised just shy of a £1000 whilst completing the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Rally a few years ago (this year we're supporting Huntington sufferers)

I hope LVG are looking after him !

So, TR Action, can we expect a covering story, surely this achievement is worth a few column inches ?

Does anyone know the itinerary of the weekend. I have heard for Saturday there is planned drive outs which do not interest me and the main day will be Sunday which I plan to leave around midday. So what is the itinerary? I have been to everyone since the late 80s apart from ill health on a couple and enjoyed them all.If this is going to be a shadow of what we are used to I will think again.

    Regards Harry TR5 Nutter

    Full itinerary here

    Friday

The much-loved evening entertainment in our beer tent will return with live music both during the day and into the small hours.

Friday will give visitors the opportunity to set up their tents if camping and to catch up with old friends over a drink in our entertainment tent. There will be plenty of catering, food options, beer and toilets on site – very important! The event will have different attractions running on Saturday and Sunday.

    Saturday

On – site, the first day of the event on Saturday will be a festival of grass roots motorsport! We have a huge treat for you with a never-seen-before feature.

The MCC (The Motor Cycle Club) will be running a sporting trial on the showground’s off-road course. You may have read about the exciting exploits of our trialling community within the pages of TR Action over the years, on events like the Exeter and Lands’ End Trials. Well, now is your chance to see the Trials TRs in action at the TR Register’s weekend event. Not only that, but a whole host of other models of vintage, classic and trials special cars will be taking part – plus motorcycles as well of course. After the competitive element to the day has concluded, spectators will be offered passenger rides to experience the sport of endurance trialling first-hand!

Meanwhile, the extensive trade show and Autojumble will be open for business across both days as will the Bring and Buy sale. There will be crafts and food for sale as well.

Technical seminars and demonstrations promise to engage the audience whilst a Carkhana takes place in the arena to add to the motorsport appeal.

Saturday will see an optional visit to the nearby Haynes Motor Museum who have laid on guided tours for us with an option to stay and take part in Go-Karting! For those who like their TRs polished, then you can watch the judging and deliberations of the Concours team during Saturday followed by the presentation of the awards on Sunday morning. Saturday evening offers the chance to party the night away with the live music and beer tent, whilst you reminisce about TR adventures passed with friends old and new.

    Sunday

On Sunday, our traditional format returns with the live arena hosted by Wayne Scott telling the story of the many special TRs we are looking forward to having on – site.

Plus, some very special guests to be interviewed throughout the day to mark seven decades of TRs. The TR Register has negotiated the ability for attendees to visit the adjacent flea market (at additional cost) that is also taking place on the Sunday. There will be lots more features announced over the coming weeks!

  5. Top tip: Along with all the usual stuff (car and experience specific) I carry a length of twin core cable with a set of universal connectors on one end and a 16amp single action toggle switch at the other. Good for jury rigging failed light switches, kenlow thermo switches, wiper switches etc. Forgotten how many times I have donated the kit on tour, most recently a TR6 wiper switch that had literally melted. Got the car home from Sicily through two days of torrential rain

I guess the performance change that might be seen if the Rad was an improvement is in the length of time a fan would run for. Higher capacity Rad would mean the fan needing to be on for less time to bring the temp down into range.

    Tim

Tim. Thanks for wording my reply. No difference in the 'performance' of the cooling system is what I meant to convey !

  7. Visitor from the TR4 forum, but same conversations are had in the pub regardless of model

My story was very simple, nothing wrong with my original Stanpart Rad but I was offered an Alloy rad at a good price so took it and fitted it. NO DIFFERENCE in the temp gauge reading which was a bit disappointing given the hype. Didn't swap it back as I was enjoying the bling, but I couldn't recommend based on performance. Other people's experience may vary

Our YW Tiguan has a position on the light switch that has headlights on all the time the ignition is on which is what we use all the time, if the car is running the lights are on!

    George

+1, All VAG group, switch to headlamps and then they are controlled by ignition. Car on, lights on. Agree with earlier comments DRLights leave the back of the car completed unguarded, awful in poor light/ fog etc (and don't get me started on use of fog lamps!)

    Hi

I heard that there was going to be a TR @ 70 event at the Bath and West Showground this year but cant find any information about it. Is it taking place ???

Here you go, looks like it's got a traditional International event vibe !

TR Register celebrates the Triumph TR @ 70! (tr-register.co.uk)

  10. One is Hydraulic and the other is electric ?

Originally the forma was only 6cyl cars but I seem to remember Harry saying they now have a 4 cyl kit ?

However, the kit is complicated compared to an electric set up, which is why all moderns now have electric PAS (no belts, fluids or hoses)

    Hi Chris,

the back end of an alternator is very sensitive to heat - more so than a Dynamo. All the semi-conductors are there.

Even with a standard manifold a heat shield would be required.

Wrapping the pipes is overkill but a shield is essential

I use a single sheet of Stainless Steel other use sandwich layers of SS and  (not) asbestos.

    Roger

+1 for the heat shield, as supplied by RogerH, and still doing the job years later. However, with an extractor exhaust pushing even closer to the back of the (Lucas) alternator, they still fail after 3-4 yrs of hard work. Early indications being a tardy red light ! After changing my third I moved from Lucas to Nippon Denso which have better cooling and, usefully, stand off a little further behind Rogers shield

  13. Mine is original I think, so 60 yrs and chipped to Fu%%. Bright direct sunlight effectively blinds me due to the chips and scratches etc, so also looking to replace

Anybody had, seen, used one of the electric heated element ones. Any good, what amps do the pull etc ?

    Thank you

  14. Mintex also do their own anti squeal paste (ask me how I know)

I had them (1144) on LNK and they were great. Had to pull them to change a caliper and COULDN'T get them to bed in again. The squealing drove me insane. So I landed up with Moss supplied ceramic pads just so I could use the car, very good for road use but haven't tracked them.

Worth putting the effort in on the Mintex and, if you can avoid the squeal, best I've had. May go back with new pads and discs

What would the wiring diagram look like for that?

    John

I wish I knew  Grown over several years, thermo switched, then override added, then diverted via ignition. Rogers 10sec delay not needed as I'm still live on the main feed (thermo switched). Bit of a mess if I'm honest but it works. Someone cleverer than me (so, almost anybody) will be along in a while to do it properly

  16. +1 wired to non switched live, relay protected with an override switch

Never had a problem with the fan running on, flat battery etc in 15 yrs

However, ironically, I did manage to run the battery flat by leaving the override switch on (Doh!) Now, the override is ignition protected although the main fan remains live

Does it do any good, I feel so, never really happy leaving an already hot car to continue to cook when parked. I'd rather cool the rad whilst also pushing the hot air out of the engine bay. Used to suffer fuel evaporation with the SU's
