  2. I want to change the front spring pin but having looked at the Moss catalogue it appears the pin is shaped like bolt with two flats on the head. I assume this goes in a tube through the chassis rail from the inside of the rail.

My chassis has the later steering rack mounts to date it and has a boss welded into each rail and it appears the pin fits from the outside interferance or taper fit?, on the inside of the rail the boss is tapped 5/16" unf which I think is used to push the pin out of the boss.

    any ideas/comments welcome

    regards Adrian

  3. I bought a set of revington outlets some time ago and was not impressed with the quality for the price charged, however unless you have a set to copy you are stuck with these.

eventually with some tin bashing i got them to look roughly equal, the grill is little more than an Aluminium grill from any air extraction supplies outlet

the inner wing can just be cut out to match the outline of the vent, i went a step further and returned the edge about 3mm to keep the panel stiff

you then offer up the outlet and trim it to the shape of the inner wing,i kept mine about 3mm away to allow for any movement

NOW comes the hard bit, mark round the outlet on the inside of the inner wing because you need to put a return on the wing to fit inside the out  let about 10mm, the corners are the worst bit because the metal will not stretch this amount easily

if you can get this far the fitting the grill will be easy

i live in leicester if you are nearby you are welcome to come and look at my rebuild

    regards adrian

  4. Hi Adrian,

Spent the whole of this summer trying to do similar in regard to seats & finally after much frustration & lack of interest from several 'Triumph specialists' in wanting to take my money I have finally installed 2 Cobra Classic CS seats & cannot tell you how pleased I am with them! Could not get anybody to supply Shadow Blue material to match my interior so settled for navy blue & they look good despite not matching. I had 2 simple brackets made that screw to the base of the new seats using existing bolt holes & thence bolt to the original floor/seat runners. Please note though that my car has a Surrey top so space would be very tight with these seats if you have a full convertible top. Mine fit a treat!

    Regards,

    Monty.

thanks for reply,i have seen these recently its nice to know they fit

    regards adrian

  5. Hi Adrian,

I commend your bravery, I do sincerely hope they work out OK for you.

When I enquired about these rods via eBay, the seller wanted me to measure the centres, diameters & dimmensions so they could be sure they made and sent the correct ones, this is how I looked when I received the email..... . Decided to look elsewhere for decent conrods.

Please keep us informed during the install and how the engine performs.

    Regards,

    Richard.

thanks for your reply will keep you posted

    regards Adrian

  6. Well I,ve done it and bought a set!!!

Why, well when i stripped the engine two weeks ago i found that two little end bearings had been spinning so the rods were scrap as far as i was concerned as i intend to build an engine that i could use for sprints, hill climbs etc with out resorting to steel cranks etc.

I had already decided i would have the original rods crack detected, lightened and balanced plus decent rod bolts which would not be cheap even if I did

a lot of the work myself. Midland Balancing i understand from my buddy Barry Hodson motorsport are very good and reasonable prices

other than find two supposedly good 40 year old rods second hand what were the alternatives? carrilo rods were out of the question price wise, Farndon wanted £150 each even trade to barry

So they have arrived and my thoughts

they were on ebay at £320, i offered £300 which was accepted, post £40 as quoted no customs costs

yes they came from China and very promptly with good tracking info

they look just as the pictures

finish is excellant, no sharp edges, internal thread ends smoothed out, little ends bushed, big ends have been honed

    wgt:

they all weigh in within a gram

end to end they appear within 1/2 gram

overall wgt a std rod weighs 33oz on our scales, these weigh 23 oz

lengths check out comparing each of the four

the rod bolts are stamped ARP 2000-08, as the company i work for makes aerospace nuts and bolts i will have these checked out tomorrow

there is no paperwork with the rods ref these bolts so i went on ARP's site to get the correct installation info

any one want to come and inspect in leicester be my guest

    regards adrian

  7. I want to replace my 4 seats with some bucket type preferably with a head rest option, note i will be fitting a roll bar and a five point harness.

Having tried (and bought)a number of seats i thought would fit but did not, i am at a loss as to what to buy.

prefer fabric rather than leather or vinyl

So any idea's what will fit ;)

    regards Adrian

  8. Hello to all,

When restoring my TR4A I decided to install an alternator. As part of the change I bought a kit from Moss including the new thin pulleys to replace the original wide belt.

The pulley for the water pump is made in aluminum (see the attached pic where the original pulley is at the side of the new one).

For some reason I got a problem after a few miles.

As shown in the pics the water pump shaft, the key and the internal surface of the new pulley became completelly worned and now has to be replaced.

I am wondering if someone here has faced this problem.

I guess one of the possibilities is the nut not properly fixed. This is quite unlike since it was firm when I find the problem.

Another possibility is the diameter of the shaft to be very close to the diameter of the pulley. Excessive gap could cause the problem.

    Any other guess?

    Thanks

    Reinaldo

A bit late to measure it now but looking at the photos the shaft and keyway have been fretting due to the shaft/pulley bore clearences being to great.

I would chance it and send it to Moss for their comments you have nothing to loose.

If nothing else its a warning to others to check this conversion before fitting.

    regards adrian

  9. <_< The engine appears to be sitting high on the front mounts so that the thermostat outlet is 3/4" above the rad inlet pipe

I have checked the chassis dimensions, the engine mounts are correct, the front plate is correct, currently the engine mounts are sitting in the chassis with just 1/4" steel packers which brings everything in line.

At this point the front of the engine is sitting 1/2" high compared to the chassis when you put a spirt level on both,I can modify the front plate but would like to know if:

    a) i actually have a problem

b)or its just me being paranoid

Any out there give me some idea's and/or a dimension from the chassis to a datum point on the engine from a car that is correct, so can check mine

    regards adrian

  10. many thanks for all your replies

did'nt know revington did a kit, teach me to look deeper in future before i source a 4A bracket and weld it in place

will mod this and lever to take a single cable for which i know a man who knows were to source a special

    regards adrian

  11. <_< i want to fit a 4A handbrake to my 4 as in 7 VC ,cannot find any photos clear enough to help

anyone know how the cabling works, do you leave the original system in place on the axle and convert the lever to take a single cable?

    OR

convert to dual cables, if so how/where do you anchor the cable fixing that usually bolts on to the 4A swinging arm casting

    regards Adrian salisbury

  12. I'm part way through this on my rebuild:

sourced handbrake and 4A cables via dreaded ebay

got tunnel bracket from trbitz off a scrapper

have welded bracket on just need to work out how to secure cables to axle

quite a lot involved if your car is not in bits like mine

    regards adrian

  13. There was a small bit in the TR club mag not long ago about somebody producing/selling very good quality aluminium rear wings and may be fronts.

know i kept this copy because i want a new wing,

I have turned the house upside down to find this copy but cannot locate it (suspect her indoors)

anybody got some back copies they can look through for me?

    thanks adrian

  14. Has anyone any experience of fitting a Stag gearbox with J type overdrive to a TR4

I know that the layshaft may need changing and the rear bracket for the mount is 1.5 inches further back

Does anyone know of any tried and tested fitment

been thinking of same modification, what did you decide to do ?

    regards Adrian

  16. Adrian

    Both Haynes & Autopress quote the rear Spring rate as " Rate +/- 5%...... 128 in/lb " and " 128 +/- 5 per cent (1.5 mkg)"

    Haynes "Static load 515 lb" ... Autopress " Fitted load 515 lb (233.6 kg ) "

Haynes "Static Deflection 4.04 inch" ...Autopress ...no mention.

    Hope this helps ?
