  1. Hello Menno,

I just read this thread after coming back from vacation, so I hope that the pictures below are still useful.

As far as I can guess from the shape of my blocks, this is not a very critical issue, as far as they can receive the screws for the sidescreen mounting plates. The only detail is that he upper-rear corner of the rear block has a notch to clear the nut for the rear-most lift-the-dot peg nut in the door.

I can send more details of the blocks if you

  2. Searching by myself, I have met the web page of North Devon Metalcraft ( www.ndmetal.co.uk) where they offer a surprisingly broad choice of panels for our cars, even in aluminium, at very reasonable prices.

I wrote them an email inquiring about some details, but have not got a response yet.

Has somebody some experience with this company and their products?

    Thanks.

  3. Hello.

A friend of mine, who is presently restoring a TR3A originally delivered to Spain, is in need of the two front wings/fenders (yes, rust is a problem in Southern cars, too).

Can you recommend some source for these parts? My friend is ready to import from UK or USA, so the location should not be a problem.

As far as I remember having read, the quality and finish of the wings/fenders depends very much on the dealer. Do those panels have the captive nuts already welded on?

Any assistance on this subject will be highly appreciated.

  4. So, it seems that my late 59 TR3A (as per the photo at the top) has an older one-piece steering shaft and a correct two-piece outer tube. This is something strange, since looking at the overall original condition of the vehicle, one would not imagine that such a major change would have been done.

My concern for covering the gap between the two portions of the outer tube was not promoted by some radical sense of originality, but just to avoid the entry of dirt into the steering shaft, especially into the lower part of the column.

I will follow your recommendations. Thanks for them.

  5. Hello.

Thank you all for your answer and interest.

Sorry. I had to tell the chassis number in a first instance. As Don guesed, it is a late TS61256L, with a non-adjustable column.

The car seems very original in all the devices I have disassembled so far, but the steering column puzzled me, since comparing with the different setups as per the available drawings in different catalogues, I could not find anything similar.

If my steering assembly is really a combination of different systems, what should I use to cover the gap in the outer tube?

  6. Thanks for the new inputs.

With your indications and photos I have been able to fabricate a cubby box, as shown in the pictures below. Now I have to line the interior with grey felt. I will perhaps paint the exterior with polyester, in order to make the cardboard waterproof.

  7. Thanks to Bob for the hints, to Menno for the pictures and to Simon for his kind offer.

Can still somebody look under the dash of his TR2/3/3A at how the cubby box is fixed to the dash panel lower edge? Some photo would be great!

  8. Hello.

During the last weeks, I have been completely restoring the interior of my 1959 TR3A, fabricating new panels, painting the central dash with wrinkle paint, and lately recovering the dash panel with new vinyl…. Interesting experience!

Now, I need to procure a new glove box (cubby box). I know I can get it from several dealers, but I would like to try to make one by myself.

Can you help me with this questions:

    - dimensions of the glove box?

    - how is the glove box attached to the dash and to the firewall?

    - any pictures of helpful details?

I will highly appreciate any information and hints on this subject.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Hello.

I am toying with the idea of completely refurbishing by myself the sidecurtains for a TR3A, starting from the frame. I know that some recovering kits can be obtained at an interesting price, but I am sure that the work from scratch is not so difficult at all, and besides saving some money, I want to learn another skill more. For that purpose I will ask a shoemaker for some help sewing the vinyl, but basically, I want to manage the project in all the stages. I have already located most of the material that I would use.

I guess that the most difficult task will be to deal with the window itself, wrapping with vinyl the frame around the windows and getting the window ‘glasses’ in the frame, and making them sliding smoothly in the felt channels.

The first thing I would need now is an original sidecurtain to copy, since my sidecurtains are in a sorry condition and not valid as a model. During the last months I have gathered several photos of all sort of TR sidecurtains, but I fear that I wouldn’t find two of them identical, given the different original types and their later variations.

Here is where I would need your help, sending some photos with details of the sidecurtains for a 1959 TR3A, or with whatever experience you have on that subject.

Several points I am intrigued about are:

    - How is the vinyl sewn around the window frame?

    - Is the sidecurtain vinyl out of one single piece? Or is the ‘skirt’ on the door is one piece, and the wrapping around the frame another one?

    - Photos with details of the above?

    - Do the ‘skirts’ have some beading to seal better against the door or the rear quarter panel?

I will welcome your inputs. Thanks in advance for them.

  10. Thanks for all the answers.

In the meantime I have obtained some more information. Really it was as easy as entering the web page of the manufacturer (MANN, PUROLATOR) and searching after Make and Model. Dimensions listed in some of these pages are similar to those posted by you, Don.

It seems that following references should be also valid for the TR2 – TR4A range (aside from other makes like MG and AH):

    FRAM CH815PL1

    FIAMM FA4009

    CROSLAND 418 (not fully sure)

    MANN H804t

    PUROLATOR L30052

    AC-Delco AC33

    Regards.

  11. Hi Alec,

    Hope you are doing well.

No, unfortunately the outcome of that affair is still uncertain…

I purchased a TR3A from the USA. I did it with the intention of selling it in Spain and making some profit for reconstructing my finances, but I liked it so much, that will try to keep it for myself.

    Thank you for your interest.

    Best regards.
