  1. Ian,

I don't have access to TRaction 156 (not kept it for various reasons). Are you able to somehow post a copy of the article on here, or email it to me?

I am in the process of building my rally car and any tested modifications for this would be most welcome.

Did Neil Revington supply all of the required parts?

    Regards

    David

  2. Mike,

The chassis on the live axle 4a is a strange affair that is different to the normal live axle 4 chassis. I've never seen one in the flesh but understand that they are more like the 4a chassis.

Obviously, the axle and suspension arrangements are nothing like those on the 4a.

I suspect that the only solution here will be to talk to one of the specialist suppliers who are likely to have suitable experience of all chassis, axle and suspension arrangements.

There are a number you could talk to, including Revington TR, TR Enterprises etc etc

    Good luck

I don't know quite how significant an error in speedo readings you will see but they are the wrong size.

    185/70 is correct.

If you insist on a different size, 195/65 is still correct but I suggest you consider this size carefully and bear in mind the earlier comments.

You will also have to tell your insurers if you use anything other than standard.

I live not too far away from you in Stratford upon Avon. Personally, I wouldn't use anything other than the Colway Road Plus. I probably use the same poor roads as you do.

  4. Don't fit the temperature sensor at the top of the rad. It is not a good place. The ideal is halfway down which is rather difficult unless you were to use a cross flow radiator.

This is why it is possible to buy the metal pipe with a boss for a thermo switch welded on where it is!

  5. Smeggie,

I cannot remember the speed rating on them but they are appropriate for a TR.

My 3a isn't here for me to have a look at. I seem to remember that they are H rated but best to check.

You should be paying somewhere around £50 to £60 for each tyre, plus fitting.

You could try Revington TR (01823 698437) and see if you can order some to be delivered to you direct for fitting wherever you wish.

My memory may be failing me but I think that Neil Revington was involved in the development of the rubber compound used in these tyres.

    Good luck.

  6. Frank,

    Yes it is.

I suggest a Google search on 'classic car hire' will help.

Alternatively, have a look in the classic car mags.

I did it and came up with this company.

The Open Road - Classic Car Hire

They are local to me in Stratford upon Avon which is also reasonably close to Stoneleigh.

Obviously, there is little point using a firm a long distance from where you will be!

If you need any help from me to arrange this, let me know-send me a message.

    Regards

    David

  7. Anyone this stupid needs locking up.

The only stupid person will be any purchaser.

No-one is forcing anyone to buy this sort of rubbish.

There is plenty of total rubbish to be found on ebay, mixed amongst the 'bargains' or hard to find stuff.

  8. Simon,

The TR3b is a completely different animal.

I think you'll find that hammerite, alloy rads and signal red paint will be fine.

Anyway, if you intend to use your car, it will need to be maintained and 'rebuilt' continually.

Being serious for a moment, the rad will be no problem.

It would have been better to not use hammerite in the first place on the chassis.

However, all is not lost. My suggestion would be to pick a hot (English hot!) day and get the inside of the chassis and bod sections covered with an Dinitrol (Waxoyl) product. At the same time, coat all of the chassis underneath. That will prevent rusting but will need to be redone every so often.

Bottom line is that the car is for using and will need to be maintained properly.

The gearbox mount is totally difficult. With no welding experience, you will have no option but to use a bolt on conversion bracket.

Even if you did have welding experience, changing the bracketry is not simple.

I have one of the more recent moss designed and supplied bolt on conversion brackets that is surplus to requirements. It is for sale if you are interested.

Even Moss (Pete Cox) acknowledges the shortcomings of their original design of conversion brackets. If you are offered one, avoid it like the plague as if you use it, you are likely to have gearbox input shaft problems in the future.

I do not know who builds the replacement chassis for Moss. If it is Colin Matthews at CTM then the chassis will be excellent.

    Good luck.

  10. Oh dear, maybe I will just see how wet & draughty it gets!

    Monty,

    I don't think I would.

If you intend to use the car in poor weather, you really would be well advised to seal it from the elements. Cold and draughty is one thing but having water constantly coming in is a different matter. It will be unpleasant and it will also ruin your car.

It must be worth the effort to try to seal the gaps.

    Good luck.

    David

  11. Eli,

I've used them all year round on my 3a with no problem.

I've been in others cars using them on the road, and on rally tests using htese tyres, again with no problem.

My TR4 rally car will have a set of them on it, when it finally makes it onto the road. I expect no problems.

They really are at least as good as any other tyres currently available. They are probably better than many.

Ask anyone who uses them in motorsport!

    David

  12. I am amazed that up to now, no-one else has mentioned the Colway Road Plus tyre.

    Great tyre.

    Correct size 185/70

    Used in motorsport.

    Recommended by many, including me.

Sensibly priced at about £50 each I seem to remember.

    Why buy anything else?

    David

  13. Noel,

I have the Webcon Alpha on my TR3a. It is fine. In terms of having two different maps, this would be really easy to do. All you would need is 2 different 'chips'. They are quick and easy to change so moving from one profile to another would be easy, quick, cheap and easy to do anywhere as you would not need to carry a laptop with you.

Just think, you could use an 'economy' profile to get to the trackday, saving fuel to use whilst on the track using the 'performance' profile.

When the engine on my 3a gets rebuilt at some future point, it will be the 4 pot version of your 6 pot engine. Full blown stupidity but still driveable due to the EFI.

    David
