  1. Very sad to hear this.  I'd known Pete for over 50 years and can echo all the sentiments posted above.  His foresight is the reason we are so well supplied with spare parts, all TR owners owe him a massive debt and don't forget that he came back and saved Moss when they were going under at the same time protecting the interests of the TR Register.

He was always very supportive during my years as club treasurer.  I last saw him at our 50th anniversary celebrations at Hopcroft's Holt where he was in his usual fine form and still quoting part numbers.

  2. Maybe a purist would object but those of us who are more pragmatic would probably leave it.  Having said that the four slot bonnet was discontinued at the same time that the scuttle vent was added, the reason possibly being that the two centre slots would direct under bonnet air directly into the vent when open.  I don't know how significant this could be.

  3. Hi Brian,

Welcome to TR ownership, you have come to the best place for help.

Is it a 3 or 3A, 3A production started in September 1957, commission and body numbers would help identification.   Flame red is not a standard colour but S-T often experimented with colours and would sometimes paint a car to the customer's wishes.  TR2/3  * wheels were in body colour and TR3A ones were silver grey.

The four slot bonnet would be from an earlyish TR2.

  4. Spark plug gaps is a very confusing subject, there is previous discussion here

My Haynes manual says 32 thou for TR2-3A and 25 thou for TR4/4A.  The handbooks (4th edition onwards anyway) state 25 thou although the 6th edition mentioned above is effectively a TR3B one.  My take is to run with whatever setting works best.

Could it be that at S-T (as in many other large organisations) different departments were not talking to each other.

Another thought, which will make starting difficult is if the main jet is adjusted too high.  I say this because the Brookland's book I have on SU carburettors says "Screw the jet adjusting nut until the jet is flush with the bridge of the carburettor, or fully up if this cannot be obtained."   ..well that is not how mine is . . .

The SU book does say this but goes on to say to then lower the jet by two complete turns (which makes it about 1mm down) and adjust from there.  If the jet is level with the bridge it is likely to be very weak.

It is this lower plate which would have been originally painted body colour, & the EB plate (added after painting) was just brass

I believe it is the other way round.  EB is the Mulliners number which was sprayed over by them after building, the other number was an S-T number put on after arrival at the factory and hence not sprayed.

  7. It must have been a collection of different films as much of the footage showed cars from the early seventies, certainly no TR6s around in 1966.  Pity there was no more information given.

WVC251 was one of Ken Richardson's personal cars which was also entered in the 1961 Acropolis Rally for 'Tiny' Lewis.

I also understood all the files/data apparently belong to the Registrars, not the club, which I found somewhat surprising not least, also worrying, because what happens to all this data if a Registrar dies or falls out with the club?

Some comment from me is probably appropriate here.

I hold all the hard copy membership records (from 1970) for sidescreen cars and so far as I am concerned they belong to the club as does anything else that I obtain through my position as Registrar.  Most of the records are now digitised in one form or another.  Documents or information that I obtain personally e.g. buying on Ebay or private research I consider to be mine although I am always happy to share it.

    Hope this clarifies things.

Rich, to deal with your specific query on the TR4 it should now be possible to search for any TR by commission number, if you would like to pm me the details I would be quite happy to take a quick look.  It won't be conclusive as if the car has never been recorded with us by a member there will be no information.

But no 3a had the screw in from underneath though Mike did they?

    Stuart.

You are correct Stuart, I was having difficulty making sense of the photograph.  It looks as though someone has added that screw for some reason, on 2s/3s the screw was recessed giving a much neater appearance.

  10. Wilen Engineering produced an improved manifold for the TR2 and when the TR3 came out they produced one for that as well.  They also sold an adaptor plate so that the H4 carbs could be attached to the later manifold.  Wilen products are quite rare but they do come up for sale occasionally.

  11. Although one can never be definitive my understanding is that TR2-4A had the same 4J wheels which were riveted, 41/2J welded came in with TR5 but I guess there could have been some overlap.

Previous threads have discussed tubeless tyres and the consensus seemed to be that wheels suitable for tubeless had an H suffix (TR6 were 51/2J H).  This suggests that the 4J rims were not suitable for tubeless, however I am aware of at least one 1955 TR2 which had tubeless tyres specified in the build record.
