It's Barry again---the first photo's are of the dynamo pully / water pump pully, the dyno has more of a flange and this could be illusion? , but the other photos are of either side of the crank and water pump, that one def' to far back--Barry

Hi Chaps --thanks for the tips, runs normal most of the time, will let you know what I do--Barry

Hi Chaps-- it's the radiator that has the two positions , it's in the forward position at the moment--Barry

Hi Chaps
My 1961 TR4 w/ remote radiator filler cap has two positions , at the moment it's in the forward position making it about 50mm (2") away from the fan, if I bring it back to the other holes would be about 20 mm ( fan to radiator) that would keep it cooler , anybody know the correct position?--Barry

Hi Mick--Thanks for that, just been on to to the engine reconer's, best would take the bare block in and they take 3 or 4 thou off the block top face that should bring the liners right height, not looking forward to the work though , and it freezing outside well a cold wind--Barry
-
Hi Mates
Just had an idea, after confirming the Ht w/ clamped liners , file the liner height square w/ the block then adjust the liner height to the right height, just an idea ? btw the top face of the block looks original surface

Hi Mates
thanks for the tips so far , no didn't clamp them down to test , I will have to give this some more thought--after clamped test will take out the liners and / check them and the fig' 8 seals

Hi mates -
been getting bubbles in my water, and a bit of water in the oil, Just took the head off, the liners gaps on the dissy side were all 5 thou, but on the manifold side, they were all less than .1.5 thou the thinnest gage I had, prob' less than one thou or even 0 gap, so what could cause that? I have a feeling the other ( early ) engines in the range may have a different liner base gaskets and I may have used the wrong one, it was years ago , any ideas --Barry

Hi Mates
thanks the replies so far, the plug to me looked like it was too cold ,thats why I put the hotter plug in, thinking more heat less soot, the s/ station I used was really expensive, looked like the dearest in Aust', so you might have something there Hamish, just come back from a test run, it ran very well, but , it seemed a bit harder to start, on 91 now--Barry

Hi Chums
I also have vintages motorbikes as well as my Tr4, They have all been i running fine on 95 for years,, if a tad sooty exhausts ,,,,,I had just run a full tank over 2 days about 300K ? in my 1962 500cc Velocette Venom clubman it ran fine to whole time , but two day ago filled up w/ Caltex (Chevron?) 95 , It didn't run good from the start and got progressively worse as the run of 70ks went on , the last 5 ks it was really bad, I was thinking I wasn't going to make it, it was like the choke was 1/2 on, when I got back it wouldn't start again, I striped the carby no prob' and points all good, but the plug was very sooty, I put a next step up hotter one in and dropped the fuel Jet needle a notch then drained the Caltex and put some Vibe 91 petrol ( which the Tr4 didn't like) and now running fine again, any comments on this would be welcome, I have a feeling ?? the cheaper petrol may have less additives in it that would make better for vintage vehicle?? only a feeling--Barry

Hi Chums--Thanks John for the photo comment, ,-- hey Hamish I bet you thought it was a long way, did you have many punctures / break-downs ? you must have had some problems--Barry
-
Hi Hamish
So you went to Dawin via S Australia? that is a longer route , were you driving? ,,I went to Gingin British car day at least 50 Triumph's there, it was a fine day apart from a very light shower, the TR never lost any water and didn't get hot, my TR4 is in the first photo, in the middle of the red ones, mines got the hood up-----Barry
-
Hi Phil Read--Did you have bubbles in the water? and after you used K-seal you haven't?--Barry
-
Hi Mike--Yes, slackened off all nuts and retightened, no different---going to the annual British Car Day tomorrow , a town called Gingin 70kms north of Perth, WA, , I wonder if I will make it , there and back?--Barry

Hi mates--I got the info' on the " 202203 head gasket" it's for a 2200 vanguard Ensign Delux' " same bore as the TR4 but 7/16 studs--should be OK?-----Barry
-
Hi Chums
checked gasket w/ a liner, the dia of the gasket is about 1mm in from dia' of liner bore,w/ plenty of liner thickness where the gasket sits I think that is OK?, if it were the other way round, ie, the gasket edge in the combustion area it could be damaged? , just noticed has " Stanpart" and a part No 202203 on it , not that would mean anything--Barry

Hi Mates
here 's my two bobs worth, the dipstick is at the front, say, car was very slight down hill when topped up, and very slight up hill when rechecked, that would be a big difference, the car needs to retested after another run , it can only leak or burn, if nothing has been adjusted ?, could have a broken oil ring?--Barry
-
Hi Chums--Yes, that's the one in the link, Yes 8V, not v8, sorry, I have been thinking about it, and it should be OK? the liners would be thick enough to locate the extra diameter, I can't see any difference if it was the same dia' as the liner bore ? only a bit of space where carbon could build up have a spare liner here will offer it up and see how it looks, get back later--Barry--

Mates
I got if from Auto Surplus, " No GHAE330 "they say it fits both engines 2000 and 2200 then they say V8 so I'm not convinced yet ? anybody used them?--Barry
-
Hi chaps--I bought a head gasket off ebay a month or more ago, for the Tr4 2200cc only just checked it , the stud holes are for ( Tractor or vanguard) 7/16" studs not 1/2" I have used them plenty of times for 2200cc 1/2" studs engines ( but this time I have bubbles ) what's the concensus ? update just measured gasket stud holes they are about 1/2"bore (no clearance ?) ),,,, bore hole about 89mm, that maybe too big?
Thanks ----Barry

Hi Chaps--I recomend the "Drill Doctor" they have several models, not that cheap though , I've got 3/4" model does a very good job, also my one ( not all?) can split the points and sharpen masonry/tungsten drills for drilling hard metal

Hi Grit
to me it sound fuel supply issue, "I wouldn't rely at Fuel at carb's", I would recheck all components again ? , Something floating in fuel tank?,,make sure the fuel supply is OK, L/pump, pressure / vacuum w/ a gauge and then flow, , fuel line may part blocked , also rotor arms can pack-up--barry

Hi Chums
took the Tr4 for about 100ks run today and the top was fine, not a hint of it coming up after increasing the tension to the webbing' / top section of the hood
thanks for all the tips-------Barry
