I don't think anyone is a purist, someone just mentioned something that the original poster may not have been aware of, and a discussion carried on about that including what another member had seen regarding the rear lights (on other 6's not this particular one). Unfortunately the original poster didn't seem to happy about that and pretty much told them to discuss it elsewhere.

    Shame but there you go.

Personally not had any criticism of my not totally factory standard TR6, but I also own a 1974 Suzuki GT750L, which when it got restored, they fitted latter model forks. Now the anoraks on a certain Suzuki forum start pinging all sorts of derogatory comments!

  2. Hi David, don’t worry about purists telling you what’s wrong! They would have a field day with mine…….cream leather, back panel painted in body colour, American front bumper and side lights, and probably many more not as it came out of the factory with! This is how the previous owner had it restored, and I have no intentions of altering it back to standard. Enjoy your car.

  3. Has anyone had dealings with Moon Automotive in Newbury, or have heard any good or bad reviews? Have emailed them about my oil pressure and have had good reply from them, also emailed Classic and Modern in Bracknell five days ago, and as of yet no response.

Just to do a crank grind seems pointless to me ? And the garage that did the first part needs to be named

The car had a full nuts and bolts restoration by the previous owner in 2016. He never used it, and I have added less than 2000 miles since buying it at the end of 2019. The place I took it to said all the top end looks new, or reconditioned. Only the crankshaft, oil pump and bearings were bad. Also said the crankshaft had been previously ground to +10, and that there was a lot of metallic matter in the bottom of the sump. Maybe the engine wasn’t flushed out properly when it was reconditioned? He showed me the wear in the oil pump and bearings. My gripe is, if he didn’t have time to do a proper repair, he shouldn’t of accepted the job in the first place. He said he had to change the parts he did, because the ones that came out were too bad, not that the new parts made any difference to the oil pressure.

    Hi Chris,

I believe they can also build your engine if you wish.

    Roger.

Just looked on their web page. Can I just drop the car off for them to take the engine out? I don’t have the facilities to remove and transport it myself.

  6. Looking for recommendations where I can take my TR6 to have the crankshaft reground due to low oil pressure. Live in Reading, Berkshire, so would like someone fairly local with reasonable labour charges. Took it to one place, they took the sump off, changed the oil pump, put new shells in but said the crankshaft needed regrinding.  They didn’t have time to go for the regrind, or let me know before they put it all back together, and charged me £635. They said I should have good oil pressure for about 1500 miles and then they will have time to do the job properly! All in all, by the time I drove home (about 1/2 hours drive) oil pressure was back down to 25psi at 2000 rpm and just registering at tick over. Not happy one little bit!

  7. Built in Reading, my neck of the woods! Did see that advertised about three years ago. It’s had a lot more upgraded than just the engine. Must have cost an arm and a leg, and a lot of re-engineering. What not to like, you get a more efficient modern power plant, and still retaining the looks.

  8. Think I have serious lack of oil pressure! Today out driving, when hot, was only recording about 10-15 psi at 2000 rpm, and just above zero at tick over. Previous owner paid a lot of money for a full nut and bolt restoration in 2016. Has done less than 2000 miles since then, mostly by me over the last 18 months in my ownership. Need to urgently get it looked at!

  9. The log book used to show the previous owner. That I know, he bought it from the restorers, who I also know. They had the car for a number of years waiting for the right time to restore it. It was off the road for 10 years, before it had a £35K restoration in 2018.

  10. Tried sending off a V888 form to try and obtain some past history. In the box asking why I required this information, I wrote, “Researching the history of my historic car, for personal use” It came back saying they cannot release this information as it does not meet the reasonable cause criteria. Guess after hitting that brick wall, the history of GCT 416N will stay hidden for ever now?

  11. Previous owners were Dr Martin L Ward from Lyndhurst, Hants, also Robert Norman from Camberley, Surrey, and an unknown owner who lived in Germany. The two names above were members and listed the car as red. I was under the impression from the company that restored her for the guy I bought her from, that she was in Magenta! Are these two previous owners still members, or does anyone know them please?

  12. Well my mot was booked for today. So took the “6” out 45 mins before to warm her up. While driving I kept pressing the pump switch, within a 1/4 mile from the garage it worked once and stopped working again. During the mot my fingers were crossed, and low and behold when the tester tried it it worked! So new mot certificate, and new pump ordered tonight.

  13. I can’t get any water to pump through to the wash jets. There is no blockages as you can blow through the tube to the jets. The pump on top of the water bottle get warm after repeatedly pushing the switch, so it is obviously getting power. The motor looks new, so was fitted three years ago when the previous owner restored it. Is it likely to be a duff motor?

  14. Shalbourne, the first classic car show that I have been able to attend since buying my TR6. Lots of eye candy to look at, from am old fire engine, a steam car, traction engine, an awesome sounding GT40, quite a few TR’s, sunshine and country views.

Have run an led bulb for about five years in my motorcycle, never been an issue on mot or dazzling oncoming traffic. So much better than standard, so plan to do similar to the TR6.

I guess the guy was dazzled not to look at the legality of the number plate!!!!!!

    Regards

    Bill

The number plate also has never been an issue at any testing station, and the 9 years I have owned it, it has been to a few! No it’s not fully compliant with the law, but I have seen a lot smaller than mine!
