After finding a broken casting on my dynamo I decided to bite the bullet and Fit a little (racing) alternator to my 3a
individually sources parts kept the price to much less than half the kit prices out there
thanks to Peter W and Fireman Tom for lots of advice in the back ground.
just waiting for some wire to finish the job.

Have you fitted some insulation to protect the beaut alternator from that nearby exhaust pipe. All the aces got me to do it when I fitted mine.

Garnet isn't a worry silicosis wise apparently, I wore a dust mask with two filter pods to keep the lungs dust/rust free. Made a plastic 'tent' in the garage to limit the spread of the dust/rust and just did a section at a time. Underneath the rust there were plenty of bits to cut out and weld in replacements. POR-15 paint for the final act.
Found that I was average at welding and painting, but good at filtering dust and rust out of garnet with my sieves, and an ace at sweeping up garnet/dust/rust.
Same blaster as Ed. had to replace the blaster 'tips' many times.

With a view like that I'm surprised that anyone would look at the sail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Roger,
think I did as you say, but to get zero toe in I ended up with a different number of shims inside and out on each side. Maybe my welding did a bit of chassis distortion before I strapped it down. Still drove OK. Good that Triumph allowed for shimming, instead of just bolting/fixing the swing arms to the chassis.

I adjusted mine from the inherited rear toe in, to neutral (0 degrees) which got rid of the sudden snap from understeer to oversteer in sharp corners.
however at one stage I measured the wheelbase and found one side was a bit longer than the other. Because I was happy with the handling I left it as it was. Dunno what the new owner has done.

I'm currently looking at every Dave Allen show I can find on the web.
(Does Irish qualify for this forum?)

Can't get over pinky losing a 'pinky'.
Dave Allen was a fellow member of that club. Hope the modern day microsurgery can fix it up OK.

Made me larf Tom!
We don't have guns at home here since the Port Arthur incident. Had to hand them in.
P#ssed me off at the time (only a .22) but doesn't bother me at all now.

When I was working on patients I thought the face mask was to protect the patient from me, rather than me from the patient. Guess it did that as well any way.
Suspect that any airborne viruses went through the spaces between the cloth/paper spaces anyway.
You may have guessed I'm not wearing one when I go out shopping.
thought Pete's comment on autoclaving was a good one.

Of similar ilk, told by the bus driver who took us to Yosemite.
On one of his trips they spotted a bear a fair way off, and stopped so that the passengers could have a look.
A lady passenger asked if he could open the door so she could get a long distance photo. He agreed but said don't get any closer than 200 metres otherwise he'll see you and chase. She ignored his advice and kept taking snaps and got to within 50 metres, and with a roar the bear started chasing her. She put on a fantastic burst of speed and got to within 5 metres of the bus door, with the bear a further 5 metres off, when the driver said he was forced to shut the door.
He said company policy forbad him from allowing a woman on board with a 'bare' behind.

During the "Taceval" exercises at Brize Norton (76-77) we would get buzzed by one at low level at some stage.
Other than Darwin, we didn't get to see them much in Oz.

if things get really tough, paper wise, you could use both sides.

that got a larf from me Fos.

Good one Tom!!!

same thing is happening here.
One bod is being taken to court after beating someone up in the supermarket over the last rolls.
What do you do with so much of it? Does anyone have any good recipes??

I bought a brand new one (Moss) and at first couldn't get it on.
Undid the bolts that are at the bottom of the windscreen attachment to the body and applied maximum rearwards rake.
Could then fit it it with difficulty. (found putting a dot to mark centre on surrey and windscreen helped.)
Gradually it stretched and fitting became routine as the front bit flattened and went further under the windscreen 'cap'.

Well I've been taking daily iron tablets recently, so maybe I'm becoming magnetic too!

Your body has obviously deposited it into your personality.

That's about what I paid for my 4A, (some years ago). I intended to do all the repairs myself. (And did - except for gearbox)
If you have to pay someone to do the fixing it will add up to quite a bit, but price wise it seems pretty fair to me.

I Live in Sydney and have a TR5 Surrey tip but can’t get soft top to fit. Rimmer in UK supplied one but too short!! About to have one tailor made. Rimmer won’t have it that their top doesn’t fit. My hardtop fits perfect proving geometry of car is correct

Tony,
I got a new one from Rimmers for my 4A. Hardtop fitted fine.
I couldn't get it to fit at first. Step one was to undo a few bolts on the windscreen base mounts and pull the windscreen back to maximum rake (used a rope to hold there while bolts were tightened.) Stretched the the soft top with weights while it was hanging in the summer sun.
Then could just get it to go into position. Found after a while the front bit gradually squished down more and more, so it went a bit further under the bit at the front top of the windscreen. After a few fittings it was pretty easy to put into place .
The hardtop still fitted a piece of cake despite me raking the windscreen further back.
So what happening in your garage this weekend?
