  1. I have finally sorted out my mirrors and opted for the “Ital” style mirrors from Holden with slightly convex lenses. They bolt through the door tops rather than using self tappers. It was a bit nerve racking but gave me the opportunity to sort out a few internal door issues at the same time. Thanks to all for your help and advice

  2. I have changed my bulbs to led because I wanted to retain the dynamo (not because I'm a stickler for originality, more because I hate parting with large chunks of cash unnecessarily! )

My instruments previously were almost invisible at night as was the car! I followed a fellow club member up the motorway as dusk was coming in one evening and it was raining with a great deal of spray. I could see the lights of the 'moderns' easily but my friend was difficult to spot. This prompted me to change mine and I feel so much safer. I have done every bulb bar the ignition bulb. The dynamo copes well. My car has had a very tired battery since I bought it but the switch to leds has prolonged its' life by at least 10 months so far. As long as I use the car regularly there isn't an issue.

In fairness, I rarely use the heater blower as the fan is noisy,  I use the flap to get air through. Neither do I have have an electric fan (to date it has never shown signs of overheating)

Some time ago, and thinking out of the box, I fitted

two 12v cig lighter outlets, one ignition controlled

one direct, both fused, in the vertical kickplate behind the seats.

Anything on charge  sits atop the transmission tunnel, very convenient.

Was always going to make a pukka, lipped shelf for here but haven't yet go around to it.

    John.

My thoughts were to attach it using velcro under the glove box. I'm no further on as it is either raining or I'm driving it! Another 100 miles under the belt yesterday. Loving it

One point to consider is, all modern vehicle cigarette lighter sockets are hard wired into the vehicles electrical system and can provide quite a few amps output which  many 12v accessories like vacuum cleaners, electric Jack's and electric tyre inflators may need as they can easily take 4-8amps on startup.

Therefore if fitting a lighter socket to a TR you need to decide what it will be, or could be used for and rate the wiring directly from the battery with an independent fuse if more than 3/4 amps are likely to be needed.

If however only a couple of items running off a USB converter are planned then linking to existing wiring should be OK with its own inline fuse of say 5amps. Personally I ran mine from a new take off from the  aftermarket battery isolator switch with a 5amp inline fuse thus avoiding any extra load on the original car circuits.

    Chris

    Thanks Chris

it is likely to be mainly used for my SatNav and charging my iPhone but occasionally though importantly for my small tyre inflator

  5. It just worried me when they say "The provided vehicle power cable must be used in the vehicle in order for the device to operate and charge the battery simultaneously.

The device cannot be charged by a USB cable in the vehicle.

When connected to a computer or vehicle via USB cable, your device may present a message stating "The attached cable cannot currently charge your device."  This behavior is normal.  While the device does receive enough power from the computer or vehicle to remain powered on and to operate, it does not receive enough power for the battery level to increase".

    Ocheye,

one of these is much more compact (the pic is merely an illustration, many different versions available)

And I'll bet you can find a lead with USBs on both ends to run your satnav.

    John

Apparently not, John. It is a Garmin and they have told me I can't convert to usb

  7. Thanks North London Mike. I'm afraid I only understood part of what you posted.

If I only have a single 'cigar lighter' type socket, I would then need to use my double in order to power my SatNav and phone at the same time. I have a double usb converter in my daily driver and it is a pain because I can't run my SatNav at the same time as charging the phone which is how I came by the combination unit that I have pictured. My iPhone uses usb and I won't be upgrading for some time as it is only one year old.

Sure, it only gives you USB ports, but a voltmeter as well!     And I'll bet you can find a lead with USBs on both ends to run your satnav.

Unfortunately my SatNav can only plug into a cigarette lighter socket. My phone, however, uses usb

If theres enough of the rivet stem still sticking through you could carefully peen it over more or failing that its going to need to come out and be re-riveted properly.

    Stuart.

I'm not sure whether it can be peened in situ. I was hoping not to have to remove the entire assembly

    Hi Andy,

one would assume that the connector plug is a straight forward 12V connection.

However rather than simply cutting it off  -  open it up to make sure there is are electronics inside to drop the volts to 5V.

SatNavs etc have the same plug but reduce the volts to 5V and are terminated in a micro USB plug.

If you are happy it is a simple 12V plug then ascertain which wire goes to the plug centre pin - this should be positive (+Ve).   Either switched or permanent live - your choice.

Connect this to a decent 12V supply via an inline fuse.  Connect the other wire in the plug to earth

The USB socket on the radio is to plug your stick into to play music. I'm sure it is not a charger in any way.

    Roger

    Thanks Roger

I have used this in my daily driver for my SatNav and it was fine (My SatNav has a cigar male plug at one end and a micro usb on the body of the SatNav itself).

There are no 'electronics' in the male plug of the unit in the pic, just a fuse. There is a red +ve wire to the plug centre.

I thought that was probably the case with the radio usb.

  11. I have just completed fitting a pair of door mirrors and while the door panel was removed decided to check out the locks, winding mechanism etc. I had noticed a noise when I shut the door and the culprit appears to be the cover plate for the door striker cog (I have attached a pic of a cover). It would appear to be attached by a single rivet through the small hole (the larger hole locates the cog). There is movement on the small rivet and the assembly rattles and moves about a lot.

I am worried that the entire assembly falls apart and I lose the cog and /or cover plate.

    Any suggestions?

  12. Hi all

I am thinking about installing a twin power socket and usb to my Negative earth TR4 and could do with some advice on the wiring.

The power socket is pictured and I would like to hard wire it. The male plug contains an 8w fuse and I assume it would be sensible to have a similar fuse in line.

There is a radio installed between the switchgear and the gearbox tunnel (This has a usb socket but I have no idea whether this is used to charge a phone or to play mp3s from a usb stick!)

My intention was to connect into the power supply and earth for the radio. Is this the best way forward? I do not have a multi fuse box under the bonnet (just the original unit)

  13. Well. I'm on 165/80/15 tyres, 195s will be heavy in comparison, Ian.

However, my tyre pressure gauge was reading significantly different to my pump. I'm hoping the pump is correct as it is brand new! It certainly feels a bit better now.

Thanks for the offer John. It would be good to get a comparison now that I've clocked up a lot more miles

  14. I find the steering on my TR4 quite heavy (though not as heavy as my 1927 Morris!). Tyres and geometry are all correct (now) and I wonder how much of it may be down to the fact that it has a 14" Motalita steering wheel.

    Suggestions please!

Am I missing something or just expecting it to be lighter than it should be?

  15. I love my TR4 and the engine but I love the Dart engine too. Could be a perfect marriage. My brother in law has owned my late father in law's Dart for many years and I have known it since my teens (I'm 69 now). Someone is about to own a very special TR4

  16. Following on from the original post, my hood has no attachments on the front edge of the window hood valance. There is a rivet on both sides which I assume would have held the elastic? straps which I don't have nor do I have any hooks. Can anyone advice on the correct positioning of the hooks and the length of strap plus loops, to get sufficient tension?

The pic shows the valance? on the passenger side
