  1. There is a common Oil Leakage problem on the Triumph 4 & 6 Cylinder Engines at the rear left/nearside corner, the Oil feed to the Rocker shaft rises up from the scroll on the Camshaft via the Block and head to feed the rockers.

If the leak isn't to bad I wouldn't worry about it, I don't think a re-torque will solve the problem but it may be worth a try.

If the leak is bad its head off, a new Head Gasket and you need to smear a small amount of Blue Hylomar in a continuous circle around the oil feed hole between head/block on both sides of the gasket, only a small amount as you don't want to block the oil feed to the rockers?

  2. Doing a quick search of Tr5's sold at Auction recently shows prices as follows including all the Premiums:-

    CCA - £48,840.00

    Silverstone - £45,928.70

    Bonhams - £46,125.00

H&H -  £75-£80K (The TR register Concours Winner from 2019?) Sold but no Price stated

All the above cars looked A1+ Or Concours condition to me.

My old car was recently listed at a dealer for well in excess of what I sold it for in 2018 and is now no longer for sale there.

    So are prices dropping?

  3. Hi Kishan

Presumably you have the standard Lucas Pump fitted?

On my car with the standard set up and pump, I always used to leave the ignition on for 30 seconds or so then try and start mine with full fuel enrichment (Choke lever out), it would normally fire up after the second or third turn of the key, running on 4, then 5 cylinders, I would then immediately push in the enrichment lever half way and with a bit of revving it would run on all 6 after a few seconds, I would then fully return the enrichment lever and it would idle ok after a minute or so.

There is a similar query on the TR6 Forum page and mention of the Injectors draining back fuel when left for any length of time, which could well be the problem

  4. This is a copy and paste of an E-Mail I received back in 2016 from Alan Ford of the Derbyshire Dales TR Group regarding Ethanol and Esso Petrol:

"Esso Synergy Supreme Plus unleaded petrol does not contain ethanol if bought from a service station in our region.

To elaborate further, not all Esso filling stations sell their premium unleaded., and not all Esso Synergy Supreme Plus unleaded petrol is free of ethanol - fuel purchased in Devon, Cornwall, Teeside and Scotland being a case in point.

For anyone who has thoughts that all premium unleaded fuels from any of the major manufacturers does not contain ethanol, I can confirm that, at the very least, Shell and Texaco premium unleaded fuels does contain up to 5% ethanol. Tesco seems to be a mixed bag – some stations do, some don’t, and I am waiting for a reply from BP. In general some, but far from all, pumps in filling stations indicate the ethanol content of the petrol dispensed.

Furthermore, it is possible, but not as yet confirmed, that Total Unleaded (all grades) sold within our area does not contain ethanol!

Hopefully this email will have been sufficiently informative to allow you to make an informed decision. If there is sufficient interest, we will expand further on the availability of ethanol-free unleaded fuel within our area, and further afield. For anyone wishing to follow the forum thread, you will find it as follows:-

(Best fuel for PI System, TR5/TR250 Forum, started 15th July 2016).

So, in conclusion, ‘you pays your money and you takes your choice’. We are not uptight about ethanol provided one's classic car has been suitably prepared. However, there is no doubt as to my intentions. At this point in time, my car will be refuelled exclusively with Esso Premium Unleaded in the run-up to its over-winter storage.

    Regards,

    Alan Ford"

So I suspect the standard Esso Fuel will contain at least 5% Ethanol (Probably 10% now!)

I've now got this cooler, https://www.ebay.ie/itm/123498948294?hash=item1cc11c66c6:g:Rc0AAOSwRfxb8cu5  the one I got is the same but with the pipes so just a matter of trimming the length of the pipes and fit it to the inside of the l/h chassis rail, my regulator is just there so should be an easy fit up.  Will do some tests for temperature when able to get out again.

That should help if not solve the problem, keep us posted?

  6. I was considering fitting a Fuel cooler on my TR5 on the return pipe run from the Metering Unit, my car was fitted with an original Lucas pump and it go so hot on warm summer days you could hardly touch it!

I ended up fitting a Heat sink to it which helped but didn't cure the problem, I've seen people fit cooling fans to blow air onto the pump, but ideally you need a supply of cool air from outside, ducting to feed the air onto the pump then an outlet to feed the hot air back outside the boot?

I believe most Diesel cars have Fuel coolers fitted to the Fuel system, which look like small oil coolers, that is probably the way to go to solve the problem?

    Hi All,

Sometime between 1979 and 1983 I was trying to buy some original black seats for my 5 and went to Ron Hopkinsons in Derby who was a breaker of MGs and TRs. The back yard to his large terraced was full of scrap - all MGs and TRs in two rows all down the garden.

He said; have a look in that pile of seats at the bottom of the yard..... I said; there are a couple in that Blue 5 piled up with junk at the back of your house.

Sorry you can't have those, that car is CP1 ......  the registration looked familiar to me from the books I'd read as a kid.

Anyhow I found 1 drivers side and 3 passenger side in the mountain of seats and he charged me £35 for a pair - I still have the seats (and the car).

I wished I had asked how much CP1 was....... although it wouldn't have mattered as I was broke after buying my 5 for £375...

    Halcyon days

That's a great bit of History, I can just about Remember Ron Hopkinsons, I was at Wilmorton College nearby in the early 80's studying for my Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship, I also remember seeing the Adverts in Practical Classics Magazine back then for them.

Do you know it they where located were the Wickes DIY Store is now on London Road?
