The OEM green throttle cable is a rare thing as is a period replacement, but they do crop up on eBay from time-to-time. I bought a few of these a few years ago from Fitchett's which have proper brass ferrules and have had one fitted for about 5,000 miles without any issues; it replaced a useless repro on from Moss which pulled straight through the bulkhead within minutes on the outside lane of the M3 at Sunbury - that shows how far I got from Moss.......

    Cheers, Andrew

Just noticed this thread, and I see that although I assume plenty of TRR members are Scots none of them appear motivated to post here, this seems like just an echo chamber of English people saying what they think about the leader the Scots decided to elect (she's the head of the Scottish National Party, the clue's presumably in the name...). Of course we know opinions in Scotland vary but right now the polls indicate a majority minded to vote Yes in any referendum.

It will be for the Scots to decide on whether they want to be independent or not and I suspect they will make their decisions as much about their tastes in constitutional sovereignty as about the economics. As did a lot of people who voted Leave in the Brexit referendum despite some assumptions by those opposing it that money would be all people cared about.

I saw a suggestion above that any referendum should be UK-wide. I can see no valid argument for that in a referendum about secession from a political union albeit a 300 year old one. Under the principles of self determination and government by consent it would have to be a decision for the Scots themselves. (Ironically, I didn't hear many Brexit supporters saying all EU citizens should get a vote in the 2016 referendum).

I think if the European  countries could vote on whether to stay/ leave the EU , the results would be quite surprising .
I’m not to sure , but I think Scottish MPs were allowed to vote on matters that affected England , but English MPs could not vote on Scottish issues. Not very democratic .

I hope Scotland remains in the Union .....otherwise where going to need a few bricklayers  to rebuild Hadrian’s Wall

Ive already told my father in law (Glasgow born) that I’ll have deported as an illegal alien if independence happens .

If we are considering time, relativity and the quantum state of existence, then  we should the recall the hot buttered cat experiment.

As any fule kno, a cat always lands on its feet, but equally hot toast lands buttered side down.

Strap a slice to the back of a cat, and drop it, from a reasonable height.

Lo!  the two effects cancel out and the animal is left in a quantum state as reality cannot collapse either function, and it hovers in mid air, defying gravity and Newton!

So  what your saying is ....if I strap toast to a cat ....throw it out a window ....it will float in air ?

    I’ll give it a go .......Buffy !!!!!

    ps

    i time travel a theoretical possibility ???

    Hi Waldi,

indeed, MIG can do some mighty thick sections.

The TIG is coming along. I've only been playing with it for a few days and many of the samples would work OK. Sadly I am not consistent at the moment.

Bit practice practice practice and it will come.

    Roger

......are you sneaking back into Heathrow and nicking aluminium from all the parked up planes ???

Ill ask my son to look for “holes “ !!!!

    Hi Folks,

as an aside; the area where the fire has burnt through is not round like the rest of the fuselage but flat - very flat.

It took from 1971 to the early 90's for this flat area to start cracking on the 747-100 series..  Flat pressurised panes are bad news, very bad news,

There is a stringer just below the cockpit side windows that goes fore/aft. This is attached to the skin panels by countersink rivets.

As the panel flexed due to pressurisation changes the sharp edge of the countersink in the panel started to crack. These cracks probably occurred 10 years or so after it started flying and proceeded to grow slowly but surely.  BA were the lead aircraft owners to find these cracks when they appeared from under the countersink rivet head. They were found visually.

When NDT were called in we could inspect under the heads and found not 1 or 2 cracks, as found visually, but dozens. There s probably 100 rivets per side.

Effectively all the holes were cracked. Boeing's reactions was pretty poor in many ways. They didn;t want to do any repairs unless you could visually see the cracks.

However BA decided as something needed doing to do it properly and repair the whole stringer/skin etc.

The 200 series have the same structure and also needed modifying or repairing before the cracks became an issue.

The much later 400 series were beefed up during production so didn't need inspection.

What fun the flight crew would have had if the cockpit opened up like a convertible sports car - rather like a TR4/4A surrey top when the front comes adrift

Like Arthur scargills “comb over “ in strong wind !!!

BA don’t fly 74s any more. That one was being broken for spares when the fire occurred.

Apparently the scrappers had a little issue with the oxygen system in the cockpit !!

I would’ve thought everything would had been “emptied “ first .

Recently over in our TR 5 Section, member Paul, posted a photograph of a TR5 under the title,

    'Is This Your TR5'

A super picture, and what followed was a really interesting, almost one could say forensic discussion, from which came the confirmed detail that the car in question was actually a Coventry Registered Personal Export TR250.

I really enjoyed the thread, and with Pauls OK have brought the picture here so a wider membership might also enjoy both the photo and the detective work.

I think that similar photographs containing interesting cars, not necessarily TRs, would be a really useful contribution to our forum.

    Anyone have any?

    John.

And this is the reason I like watching old TV series like Randall & Hopkirk, Department s , Jason King , The persuaders .... for the old motors in period settings

When I was 18 I drove my Hillman Imp into a flood. (Having a rear engine and an almost empty fuel tank at the front it floated several yards before it sank.)
The AA refused to recover the car because they said the flood was “An act of God”.

I pointed out that the reason the car was in the flood was nothing to do with God, it was simply “An act of my own stupidity.”

They still refused to recover the car.

    Charlie.

I find this “this act of god “ get out clause  appalling . At the risk of offending religious people , how did they know God did this ?

As a new Devonian, and incipient smallholder, I can only wonder why you boys don’t make your own! It’s not hard, just tedious. You could try some pickled eggs as well whilst you’re in preserving mode!

Ben, I’ve been in Devon for 30+  years and lived in the same village for 28 years . The village post master has only just started talking to me !!

You don’t mess with pickled onions in Devon !!!
