  1.

Or at least that was the price few months ago when I asked. There is also a £600 surcharge, refundable when you supply a pair of front suspension towers (or your old chassis). That is for the bare chassis, you can paint it yourself or get them to do it at extra cost.

I'd order one tomorrow but I haven't figured out how to hide it from the wife!

Its easy to hide it from the wife, slide it under the bed.

  2. Hi

We got back home Friday night, after 1200 or so TRrouble free miles :D :D :D, no spannering :P . We had a great time, met some great people, stayed in some really lovely places and probably drank too much wine  . Weather was **** most of the time but we were determined to keep the roof down apart from a couple of times when the rain was so hard and I could not go quick enough to stop it coming in.

Angouleme was great and the 2 really sunny whole days for 2 weeks.

Many thanks for all of your good wishes especially to our international forum members Kevin - KOB, Marc – MARC R and Alan – KIWIFROG for giving me their phone numbers, offers of help and spares if they had them.

Thanks to Andrew Smith for his recommendations for places to stay. Michel and Erica also send their regards Andrew.

If you’re thinking of doing a similar trip, go for it, it’s brilliant. So many people, beep you, give the thumbs up, smile and the car turns many heads.

Many people come over to you to talk about the car.

This is the route we took: - Depart Portsmouth on Cap Finistère to Santander, Spain. Stayed one night in Bilbao, Spain then onto Biarritz, France for two nights, then onto the Dordogne area staying 1 night in a superb Treehouse in Nojals-et-Clotte, then to Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse for one night, then to the vineyard in Minzac for two 2 nights, then to Angouleme for 2 nights and then left there for a 6 hour drive to my house near Mayenne for 4 nights, Then Home :(. (Ooh lots of then's)

A massive thank you to all and if I have missed anyone out I am sincerely sorry.

This FORUM has been SO helpful and inspirational to help me and encourage me to persevere  .

I was thinking of you, we had to leave Charente on the Friday evening just prior to the Concours as we had tickets for Rugby on the Sunday in UK. I did keep a look out in my mail box just in case but it seems all ok. PERFECT

  3. I used to own NVM 395 W a TR7 convertible at the time it was a gold and in pretty good order.

There is an interesting history to the vehicle prior to my ownership, so if the current owner is on this forum and interested please contact me.

  4. Don't forget SC Parts ( Southern Carb) at Crawley, good online shop and if you are in this part of UK good counter staff.

A few years ago I had some quite serious issues with parts quality, however I believe that is mostly a thing of the past.

  5. I read this thread with a great deal of interest, especially the mis guided view that "professional" restoration is more reliable than an amateur job. Of course incompetent amateurs can make a real hash of things, but then so can and do professionals.

Next to my own factory there is a classic car workshop that specialises in MG's however all marques pass through. yesterday the owner of the workshop attracted my attention to a very interesting "professionally" restored TR5 that the owner had purchased last year for 45K. It was worthy of the worst amateur resto project of the year award.

I also know of a regular contributor on these pages who is a professional who did some work on a TR belonging to a pal of mine earlier this year. The person concerned will be lucky if a County Court summons is not served.

My point is that many amateurs are every bit as competent as someone who makes a living from older car work and that to suggest that the vehicle in question here has not been exposed to such skill is completely wrong, And for a contributor to claim that a TR4 can not be restored at home is quite simply nonsense.

  6. This is a very timely topic! We are currently booked to travel from Portsmouth to Caen and then spend 2 weeks hopping down the west coast of France via Le Mans, Bordeaux, La Rochelle, St Jean de Luz and San Sebastián before getting the Bilbao service back to Portsmouth in time to head up to Malvern... Tried to keep the mileage low per day and stick to the n roads so as not to stress things too much...(what I know about fixing cars you could write on a stamp)... But having had a series of annoying break downs recently... Including sat which required the car to be recovered to the garage, I am just not sure whether this is a good plan.. The boss would very much prefer it if we took the new car!

What and miss out on all the fun................standing by the side of the road for 3 hours in the rain !!!

  7. One has to be aware that your insurance cover for breakdown is a contract, and this will bind you to the terms of this contract.

They will always refer you to an approved repair centre to fix your problem and get you on your way. This may be all well and good if you have a conventional problem such as points condenser, fuel supply to carbs type problem.................but if you have a typical TR6/5 PI problem forget it.

I had a issue around 70 miles from my French home in my TR6 and pleaded with RAC that they take my car to my home where I would take responsibility and fix the issue, releasing their liability. They would not have that scenario. insisted the car was either abandoned or they take it back to UK or a local repair centre.

And dont forget that if you have a problem that is resolved and then two days later suffer a similar problem, which on PI is always a likely hood with poor technical support, you walk home, its a one trip one claim policy always.

Enjoy euro motoring folks, I have done it for years and live in france near Angouleme but always embark on an adventure with eyes wide open. in rural France and Spain there is no assistance. unless a TR register member can assist.

  8. Last September a pal of mine in his TR6 that was still running Lucas PI came to visit me at my house near Angouleme for The Circuit Des Remparts. well he didn't, but planned to.

His chosen route was from Plymouth to Santander on Brittany and them motor through Northern Spain to Poa and then up to me in good time for Les Circuits............... He allowed a week for the journey from Santander to Charente.

All I can say is that even with what you think is the best breakdown recovery it still leaves a lot to be desired. CAUTION is what I proffer as once you make that call you are in the contracted hands of your service supplier and have very little input as to what they decide is the best action for you or your car.

1st problem is that there is NO commercial organisation in Spain or probably France also that has the capability of understanding a Lucas PI system let alone working on it or identifying any problems. The RAC Euro cover seriously sent the TR with failed fuel system on day 1 to a Skoda dealer who didn't know what the cars was let alone what may be wrong with it. From there are after 3 days of diagnosis it was sent to a Ferrari specialist who equally was clueless.

Ok so a rental car is provided. not ideal as they cannot leave the country of rental and as this planned trip did not commence and terminate in the same country the car hire/loan facility was virtually useless.

I will not bore you with any further details but the outcome was startlingly awful and the car arrived back in UK 2 months later than the owner

Be warned break down in a non current car in Europe and no matter how fully covered you think you are the outcome will be a torture if the vehicle is anything other than a 2CV or similar.

  9. No Neil

Thats owners who put their cars away in October / November then get them out in March / April & wonder why they have issues :o

    Cheers

    Mike

My 6 never comes out before 1 June, April/May far to early

  10. I have spent my working life designinh air to fluid heat exchangers, and have often reviewed the TR heater design, The delta T airside is low so do not expect any great heat output, so if anything is not quite right, such as air block or cavitation the outout will be severly compromised.

I have long since just accepted that a heat output that barely warms the legs is as good as it gets.

  11. I find myself with a 3 sets of wheels/tyres for my 6.

Original steels with Michelin skinny tyres, revolution and KN minilites. The car is Sapphire blue.

In my opinion the best looking are the KN Minilites, however the original steels with correct spec tyres really do look the business,

This year I will run the minilites.

the revolution wheels which are finished in graphite and polished rims don't really look correct in my view, even though they are period.
