  1. Mark,

When I wanted to get a new ignition key cut (the old one was worn and no number marked on it), BMH were able to give me the original key numbers for a small fee, £5 I seem to remember, so they might be able to help you too.

Unfortunately, in my case, it turned out that the lock had been changed some time in the previous 40 years, so I had to get a new key cut to pattern!

  2. Hi, Keith,

Sorry, I was a bit slow on the uptake there, should have picked up the inference that you were a member of the TRR, not just the forum.

As Roger says, it really should just take a call to the office to get your status sorted and it’s very disappointing that you are having so much trouble.

Hope the next call will sort it out for you!

  3. Hi, jogger,

When I bought my seats from Paul Bishop, he told me that some Mk 1 MX5’s also had seats with separate headrests, which is what he supplied to me.

Trimmed in black leather with the correct pattern panels sewn in, they look just like the originals.

  4. Lee,

Had this happen to me, turned out to be the coil which came back to life when it had cooled a bit.

Easy to check if you have any HT if it happens again.

    Good luck,

    John

Edit: Just noticed Mike C has beaten me to it!

  5. Colin,

I exchanged a manky tubular manifold for a standard twin pipe cast iron job about 5 years ago and noticed no loss of performance.

I did have it media blasted then aluminium sprayed and it still looked as good as the day I fitted it when I sold the car in February.

The firm who did it for me are in Wolverhampton - if they are near enough for you to get it to them, send me a PM for the address.

  6. Rob,

When I bought my TR, I found that the engine had been changed in the past from a CR to a CP and it ran very roughly. I found, after a lot of head scratching, that the distributor had the advance weights for a CR, even though the correct part number was stamped on the body.

The Distributor Doctor put in the correct weights for me, which improved the pick-up no end.

May be worth a check? If you think it’s worthwhile, I may be able to find what change I had to make, but DD would help you to ensure you have the correct weights, I’m sure (the degrees of centrifugal advance are stamped on the weights).

  7. Hi, Adrian,

Given that the original voltmeter isn’t exactly a precision instrument, I bought a digital voltmeter for a few pounds on eBay and plugged it into the cigarette lighter socket which I have on the dash. It may not be that much more accurate, but at least you have some nice red numbers to look at!

  8. Hi All,

The speed rating for tyres fitted on a TR6 should be "H" rated.

When I put my TR6 on to Historic vehicle plates here in Spain the ITV or MOT station ruling is that the tyre size and rating should be as it left the factory.185x15x "H". Yes the cost nearly doubles for the "H" rated, I paid over €100 for each Vredestein Sprint tyre in 2016..

Surely in the UK, Having "T" rated tyres fitted on a TR6 would affect the insurance premium or even invalidate it. Or am I wrong?

    Kind Regards,

    Dave from Spain

Yes, Dave, I picked up on the speed rating issue when changing to TTrac2’s last year. If I recall correctly, the T rated tyre is good for up to 118mph, while the TR6 is said to have a top speed of 120mph.

I took up the matter with TRRI and they have accepted, in writing, that they are in agreement with the alteration.

  9. A few years ago I had intermittent, lumpy acceleration issues which I think I pinned down to a failing coil. Might be worth you testing yours.

    Cheers, Darren

+1 for the coil beginning to fail under load, sounds very similar to my friends problem CP which we fixed last year.

    Good luck,

  10. Hi all

A side question - does anyone happen to know where to get seat belt guides for these seats from ?. ie the MX5 separate type headrest with 2 posts.

    Best Bill

    Hi, Bill,

I have seen guides made from leather belts doubled and with two holes punched through to match the positions of the two posts.

Sounds a bit rough and ready, but the ones I've seen look good and seem to work ok, as well as being all but free, if you buy your belts from a charity shop!

  11. While some Mk1 seats are the Tombstone design, there are Mk1 seats with separate headrests, similar to the Mk2 design. When I contacted Paul Bishop about this, he responded with -

"The mk1 seats you are looking at have removable head rests. They made seats with separate head rests for the mk1 and mk2 , the only difference is the runners. The mk1 seat runners are easier to adapt to the conversion kit you will need"

So I bought the Mk1 seats with separate headrests from Paul, covered in lovely black Italian leather and my back has not stopped thanking me since.
