  1. If this is against forum rules please take it down. I tried the classifieds but could not get it to work. I have X 4 72 spoke interlaced wire wheels that are fitted to my TR4A. They need a good clean but they will polish up well. I did a little patch that you can see here as a test lose up of surface rust then a picture after I used Autosol on them.. I had 165R15 American Classic whitewalls on them. They don't stick out past the body and I have always got a UK MOT test with them so no issues. If you would like them PM me. £350 for the set and you would have to collect from Woodchurch in Kent, UK.

  2. Here is a picture of it fitted. What makes this really work is the flats as it means you can install it without the Monkey Wrench. I think Marco's stills needs the wrench.:-) All else fails there is always stockings but if you are driving with a lady that wears such things I don't think the fan belt will be on your mind at all.

  3. I have not posted for a while but I thought I would share this one.

45 miles from home on my wedding anniversary the red ignition light came on and the temperature started to rise.

The tell tale sign the fan belt had gone.

On many cars changing a fan belt is a fast affair and can be done roadside but on a TR4A I have found the best way is to slacken off the engine mounting bolts and jack up the engine to create enough room for the belt to pass between the steering rack and the fan extension tube. So no chance of fixing it at the side of the road.

Fortunately, I had an ally racing radiator fitted and after stealing some water from English Heritage, driving for 20 miles and then topping up at a service station I made it home without much trouble and no overheat. It could have been a lot worse.

So now you know the back story I decided this would never happen again and I redesigned the fan extension tube so a fan belt can pass through freely.

I have added some pitcures here so if anyone wanted to do the same they would get the idea of what needs doing. It was machined and made symmetrical for balance.

The eagled eyed will spot the flats that have been added and this is to get a spanner on as opposed to the monkey wrench usually required to get the extension tube off.

So far so good and I'll report in if it doesn't work out for any reason

Now I can carry a spare fan belt and if it goes I know we'll be back on the road in 10 minutes.

Hope you are all well and safe.

    Best wishes

    Paul

  4. Thanks Roger as always.

So, if I have this right.

If I put a Surrey on my TR4A it is a matter of

1: Replace convertible hood frame with Surrey frame and backlight.

2: If using a canvas Surrey roof no problem in fitting straight on.

3: If I want to use a hard Surrey roof the brackets for the convertible roof have to come off.

4: Does the windscreen cap on the TR4A have to be replaced/altered to take the hard Surrey top?

5: Understand on the sun visor bracket. Has anyone got a picture of this?

    Many thanks.

    Paul.

  5.

I am late to this topic but.......My overdrive would engage but then would not release.

I tried the oil/solenoid/switch first but eventually traced the issue to the pressure valve.

It is a gearbox tunnel off operation.

This is my valve in the picture. There is a small hole the size of a pin and this was blocked with the smallest piece of crud/grit.

If you have a gearbox rebuild I guess it is possible to have the smallest bits of metal floating around? This was potentially my issue.

It is a DIY job but it is just a faff and be careful not to drop anything. One part is a ball bearing for instance and if that drops????????

Once unblocked everything worked fine and has done since. (4 years).

    Best wishes

  6. Got to the bottom of it.

    Front shaft bearing collapsed.

Damaged front shaft and main shaft.

    Metal deposits throughout the box:-(

Complete rebuild required! to get rid of loose metal etc.

Let's hope this time we nail it for good.

  7. So,

We replaced the release bearing and put a new fork on.

On the test drive a massive crunch in second persists.

So we drained the oil and it is full of metal.

This is a box that was rebuilt by Mike Papworth 4,000 miles ago???~

In any event, it looks like another rebuild is in order as we can see bits of bearing in the oil???

    Bummer:-(

  8. All gears are stiffer than usual.

Reverse is fine but stiffer than usual.

Roger I have an awful feeling that you maybe right!!!

    Gearbox out again!!!!! Arrrrgghhhh!!!!!

Where can one purchase an industrial strength taper pin??? The best.

    Best.

    Paul.

  9. I thought I would moppet a question out there before I do more digging in case it is anything obvious that springs to your collective minds.

My gearbox quite suddenly decided that going ion to 2nd gear was a problem. I was driving along and went to change down and could not get it in to 2nd without a crunch.

    1st, 3rd & 4th gears seem a lot better. Maybe 3rd has a little trouble engaging. 2nd is a 'I don't want to go in'.

Recent history of the box is as follows.

1: Overdrive and gearbox rebuilt by Mike Papworth 3,000 miles ago.

2: Had an overdrive issue that was the pressure relief valve - sorted no problems.

3: Complete oil change at 3,000 miles.

3: Had a grumbling clutch release bearing and replaced that all fine

    The overdrive is working fine.

Clutch slave adjust as much as possible at the rod.

    Any thoughts?

  10. The Purolator always weeped oil at the seal.

Tried lot's of non-invasive things to fix.

So I decided to go for the spin-on conversion and all is well.

On inspection the filter out of the Purolator is distorted - see pictures.

I am guessing it is heat that has done this? If so should I be worried?

Is my engine getting too hot or something else?

    Best

  11. This little video should make you laugh.

It was all my fault. I had installed the wiper box upside down. Made more comical with the lolly stick.

All sorted now although I had to do some wok to the new wiper arm. It was too tight to go on to the wheel box shaft so I grinned down the insert a little and used a rubber mallet to secure.

    It will not come off:-)

    Thanks for your help.

  12. When I rebuilt my 4A I should have replaced the wheel boxes but I used the existing ones.

Anyway, today I braved the damp and cold and replaced the wheel box.

I have a tip, refit it with the backplate in place lightly held by the screws.

It has taken ages as access under the dash is a nightmare.

Imagine my dismay when the wiper box appears to go in the opposite direction to the other side????

    What have I done wrong?

I have left the shed for the evening as it is dark and cold but I thought I would ask you guys for a quick pointer.

It can't be as simple as putting it in upside down? I think it works the same anyway either way up?

Any pointers welcome before I resume tomorrow.

A wiper box is eating my whole weekend??? How can this be?

    Thanks

    Paul

  13. Hi,

My grumbling clutch bearing is grumbling to much to the point where it is making grumble.

Is there a simple way to get to it?

Or, am I engine/gearbox out? Interior strip out to get to the box etc.

Just wondered if there was an easier fix than I think there is?

    Cheers.

    Paul.
