  1. Hi ...I don't want to hijack this thread but the commission plate is missing off my CP '71 TR6...I've found out what the correct number is off the club and am going to purchase a blank plate...Is there anyone that offers a service of stamping the numbers in the correct sizes and or fonts onto the plate?

  2. I was at a car meeting the other week and saw some TR6's fitted with MX5 seats.... Chatting to the owners it seems they are MK1 "Tombstone" seats....I must say they really looked good and apparently provide a lot more comfort than the originals plus being high backed offer better safety in the event of a shunt...

My question is having looked on EBay it seems they can be picked up quite reasonably however I'd need them recovering in blue...probably vinyl rather than leather

Anybody had this done and what sort of cost do you think would be incurred for getting a seat recovered?

Many thanks for any advice on this.

  3. Sadly I haven't found a boot that doesn't start disintegrating the moment you fit it... Absolute rubbish the stuff I have bought requiring the job to be done again like the o/p in a couple of years...does anybody know of any good quality stuff being sold?

  4. Ok this is a bit of a strange one...Just getting my TR6 back on the road after many, many years off the road when I last drove it

it's a 1971 reg UK car. The ignition lock is situated underneath the steering wheel around the lower crash pad

The ignition key goes in ok and turn ok as does the steering wheel with no restrictions...When the key is removed and the steering wheel turned it does not lock in place at all

How can I tell if it has a lock or not? If the lock has failed should I be concerned driving it like this? (if ok I will leave well alone)

    Many thanks

  5. Thanks Neil...and yes I did ring them earlier this morning and they confirmed what you said...So unfortunately my 996 pump is just scrap because of a few unobtainable seals, so I guess it's now welcome to the world of "Bosch type" pumps for me now!

  6. Anybody aware of anybody in the uk or even worldwide who reconditions these pumps? Mine runs too after not being used for many years but once you try to put fuel through it the seals are leaking unfortunately

  7. So presumably anyone that is running their TR6 on tyre sizes that are different from those that it left the factory with needs to advise their insurance company that the vehicle has been modified otherwise in the event of a claim the insurance company can say the policy is invalid?

  8. My Bosch conversion on my TR6 was done with I believe a 996 pump nearly 30 years ago by Enginuity.... The fuel comes out of the tank along a short piece of fuel hose then into a large Bosch inline fuel filter then another piece of hose to the pump which is mounted on the chassis down behind the rear wheel arch

  9. I keep hearing about the Bosch 996 pump on this forum and it being the one to have on the TR6 ...I believe I have one on my car and it was installed nearly 30 years ago... What makes the 996 so special compared to other pumps please?

  10. I suspect I know the answer to this question ...however given that the knowledge base on this site regarding these TR6's is extensive...Here goes

My TR6..1971 CP is gradually getting back on the road after a 30 years absence

I drove it in the 80's as my everyday car for nearly 3 years with the set up I describe below!!...plus of course it went through MOT's like this..

It was a 7 owner car when I bought it all those years ago and had already been extensively worked on including a body off as far as I know

Ok I am in the process now of looking at the steering rack....Much to my surprise I have found that the rubber flexible coupling is at the bottom of the lower steering column and the metal universal joint at the top...It seems that the lower steering column has been fitted upside down at some point...

It certainly is converse to every diagram I can find...

Has anyone seen this before...Why would it have been done like this?.....Apart from the obvious answer!!!

    Thanks for your help

  11. I have fitted Maxxis tyres to my modern vehicle after they were recommended to me... I had never heard of them before and assumed they were some budget tyre junk until I researched the company. I have been very impressed with them so I am going to fit Maxxis MA510 VICTRA 87T 165/80/15 on my Steel wheeled TR6

  12. Just saw this thread...I have a 996 Bosch pump....The last time I used the car which was many years ago the pump was fitted below the tank and fastened onto the chassis behind the back wheel exposed to the elements...It was actually fitted like this professionally by one of the TR experts (who are still going)

Does anybody else have a bosch pump fitted in that position now? ......I did drive the car like that for 3 years but as I am now getting it going ...on reflection it does seem a bit exposed to getting caught by stone chips and other worse things!

  13. Hi thanks for all the advice...In the end a chap down the Rd with a press managed to get the flanges out ok..So we got to that part ok

    Next problem and question..

My differential is one of those fitted with what seems a daft idea of a collapsible spacer rather than shims...Given that the vehicle has not moved under its own steam for nearly 30 years I want to make sure the preload is correctly set and obviously put a new collapsible spacer in first...Can anybody recommend an engineering shop in the Guildford or surrounding locality to do this as I see it needs special tools to do it...I am aware of the number of turns on the nut solution but I have to make the assumption its not correct at the moment

    Thanks for all your help

  14. Hi is there anybody in the Guildford area and surrounding that has done this job that might be able to give a bit of advice on this please? I have managed to remove the differential from my TR6 ok and have purchased the three replacement seals...The intention assuming the bearings are ok is to just replace the seals

Do I need to take it to an engineering shop? Obviously concerned to make sure I don't damage it!

    Thank you

  15. Right, had my diff rebuilt twice ( yes it did need it second time) and it's installed back in my car. It's STILL whining....ok, not as bad as before, it's not a diff issue now rather a noise transmission issue. The ONLY thing that's different about the diff is that it's now mounted with poly bushes rather than the rubber ones that came off. I can only assume these are what is transmitting the mechanical noise to the chassis/body as I've been all over it looking to where it may be touching. I can't put the old ones back 'cos the dog pinched them and chewed them up. So, I'm going to buy some original rubber mounts. I know there have been "issues" with some of the rubber mounts from some suppliers so I want to buy the best, can anyone recommend a good supplier?

I'm in the process of removing my diff in order to replace leaking seals as part of recommissioning my tr6.. I read all the posts I could find on hear about Diff rubber/polybush mounts. The rest of the car is going poly but I did decide in the end to rubber mount the diff & have purchased rubber mounts from that well known London based shop. Some people say poly on the diff mounts causes a hell of a lot of resonance through the chassis..others say it doesn't and also a lot of people say its a noisy old TR6 with 1950's type engineering so don't worry about it!

  16. Thanks Bill,

I`m looking for the sliding boots for the half shafts.

    mark

Ditto..and quite honestly I've got to the stage where I would pay four times the price if i was assured the bloody things would last and not disintegrate within a few months of fitting.. What I'm really annoyed with myself about is that I destroyed a perfectly good 30 year old one replacing the other side (good practice to replace in pairs!!) before I learned about the complete junk that is being sold ... Anyone, Anyone know of any decent ones available that are fit for purpose?

  17. The TR shop in Chiswick sell poly bushes considerably cheaper than is available as "branded".. My experience of the TR shop is they have been there an awful long time and don't sell rubbish... Anybody used their polybushes on their TR? Just concerned as like the original poster I'm not after and ultra stiff track car but one that is a good compromise between handling and comfort on the Rd
