  1. Please wait while image is uploading...

Just got the tunnel off my TR6. Minor leaks from gearbox/overdrive which I believe to be an A type??

This bolt seems to have a pool of oil around it and wondering if source of leak.. Was wondering if it can be removed and if felt washer underneath

Before I touch anything can anybody tell me what this bolt does??

    Thankyou

  2. I've just removed the old 80s stereo from my TR6 as part of a gearbox out job (That's another story!)

Please wait while image is uploading...

The old 80s radio cassette never worked properly and I've been given a, Panasonic 90s unused cd/radio

I know you can get retro units that the spindles will fit through existing holes but I notice from looking at the dash bracket support (photo attached) that somebody has already done some nasty cutting at some point in the cars 51 year life!

Has anybody fitted a modern style stereo like mine? I think I need to purchase some sort of cradle for it to sit in and will have to cut the crash bracket some more (neatly this time!!) to make it fit.. I'd there enough room at the back for such a unit??

I know I won't use it much as I enjoy the sound of the engine but just a job I'd like to sort.

    Thanks for your help

  3. Probably being a bit cheeky here but thought worth asking

It looks looks like my gearbox with 0/d has got to come out of my TR6 and be rebuilt. I last did this on the same car 35 years ago with my brother and remember just how heavy it was..

Looks like i'm going to have to do it on my own.. It's beyond my skills to make a stand so I was wondering in anybody that has made one would be willing to lend theirs at all..Happy to pay all costs/hire charge etc

    Many thanks

  4. Am I the only one that does the injector in a jam jar and starting the car up (Fire extinguisher at the ready) method these days?..and swap the injectors around on the faulty one to see if its the injector on the metering unit?

  5. Brings back memories of a few years ago when mine stopped working as soon as I'd driven half a mile..Replaced the solenoid, switch..Didnt fix it

I took the tunnel off and drove it with the gearbox exposed and operated the overdrive lever without the soenoid attached with a piece of string..proved nothing was wrong with the o/d unit..and has been pointed out DON'T EVER PUT IT IN REVERSE WITH OVERDRIVE AS IT DESTROYS IT

In the end it was a replacement overdrive wiring loop that solved my problem..something strange was happening once the old loom got warm from the engine and was cutting power to the solonoid and stopping it operate.

Pleased you have got yours sorted..They are not very nice to drive without an overdrive on fourth

    Thanks Conrad, I’ll PM you.

blimey! Winchester is a hell of a drive.

Worth it though..I bought some leather covered MX5 seats from Paul Bishop a few years ago..Not sure what he charges these days but I'm absolutely delighted with mine and what I paid for them...Highly recommended!

  7. I'm afraid from a legal standpoint he is incorrect..you just need to be insured

....If Lancaster insurance have a clause in their own policies that mentions this specifically and excludes that situation  then he may be giving you the correct information ...so i'd ask him to point you in the direction of the small print that says it!

I have had good luck with this. Directions are on the web page (I also used some short pieces of chain with the metal prep and some major shaking).

    https://por15.com/products/fuel-tank-sealer

I used this on my tank 5 years ago...Not the cheapest but I've had no problems whatsover and would use it again

I used a chap called raven smith to refurbish the metering unit, injectors and PRV..If you do a search you will find out all about him..He is a one man band and my dealings with him were fine..He is very resonably priced and knows what he is doing...My TR6  had never run so well once I refitted the reconditioned parts that he did for me

I didn't mess around with the existing pump as it was leaking once I put pressure on it but bought a Bosch kit from malcolm at prestige who is now retired but there are others that sell the kit..if thats the route you want to go

I've done 5K in the car since and it hasn't left be the side of the road and has been fault free with the injection system

I'm willing to be proven wrong but I'd be suprised if more than one company has jigged up to make S/S bumpers... My understanding is that they are made in vietnam...Folk that have fitted them seem extremely pleased with them.

I notice the TR shop in Chiswick is selling them...might be worth comparing with the Rimmer bros price!!

Well looks like I was completely wrong and there are a few versions now available!

  11. My two penny worth

Depends how much mucking around you want do to ..My TR6 was off the road in my ownership for many years..A few years ago I got it going again..I'm happy to do maintenence on it but dont want to be constantly worried every time I come to a traffic jam in hot weather and something is going to overheat (pump) and cause the car to conk out

I bought a Bosch pump conversion from Prestige

Reconditioned PRV from Raven Smith (exch)

Reconditioned metering unit from Raven Smith (exch)

six reconditioned inhectors from Raven smith (exch)

The thing has never run as well...I've done 250 mile round trips a few times and she has not missed a beat

No problems whatsoever in the fuel injection department in the 5K my car has covered since back on the road

  12. I find this thread if factually correct (and I have no reasons to think its not) an absolute shocker!

Anybody that is even vaguely familiar with the Lucas Pi system know that by modern fuel injection standards it operates at a crazily high psi of around 100...about x3 of a modern system

Flogging hoses that are not remotely up to the ability of coping with this pressure is the sort of thing you might expect if you buy cheap from a car boot sale.

From one of the largest classic motor factors I find beyond comprehension to be honest given the potentially catastrophic consequences of failure.

If something awful happened as a result of the failure of a component like this it would give ammunition to those who want our "death draps" off the rd permanently

The club should be devoting its resources to getting resolved and warning owners of the situation IMHO

  13. My experience is fit and forget after installing a Bosch pump. I realise it will fail the conkers & rivet counters test but to be honest I enjoy driving my TR6 and whilst I recognise its a 50 year old car that will need constant fettling ... worrying about breaking down with an overheating pump/cavitation is one less thing to worry about from my point of view!

  14. My TR6 CP Pi was off the road for many years...I junked the existing (bosch) pump and fitted a new one and wired it in properly with a solonoid, and had the metering unit and PRV valve and all six injectors refurbished by Raven Smith (many references to him on this forum)

4 years later and 5k miles zero problems and has been totally reliable

Just ordered 2 x New Black Leather MX5 Mk2 seats with the headrests for the TR6 from Paul Bishop. Very helpful chap. Not cheap, but a very knowledgable man, who knows his stuff & produces quality items.

Really...(about the not cheap) maybe he has stuck his prices up but when I purchased from him a couple of years ago I thought they were a bargain compared to elsewhere available on the market... Top quality leather think I paid around £650 for the pair...purchased the runners on Pauls advice from carl at TR Trader

    No idea Jogger. Any pictures?

I recently bought a Pierburg 7.21659.72.0 Fuel Pump for my PI. I had read that it was a possibly quieter alternative to Bosch which I have, and retails for about £120. Amazon had some sort of sale and when it hit £40 I bought one. Afterwards the price immediately jumped back up to £120. I see it's gone back down to £35 - what are they playing at? I haven't fitted the Pierburg yet - I'm waiting for warmer weather - and there'll be a bit of engineering as the in/outlets are different!

Check out http://www.w124performance.com/docs/general/Pierburg_fuel_pump_specs.pdf and look for the E3T variant. Do you think Malcolm might have used this one? The Pierburg claims a system pressure of 94psi but the performance graph goes up to 150psi. One of the advantages is that they claim it will prime up to 0.5-metres.

    Cheers, Richard

Richard ...This is what is shown on the now retired Malcolms web page relating to the "Bosch type" pump fitted alongside a picture of the arrangement
