This annual prestigious ceremony for the National Car Club Awards was held at the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show at the NEC on the evening of the 24th March 2018.
The car club awards were split into three categories – Classic Car Clubs, Devoted Members and At Show winners, chosen from the clubs displaying at the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery.
In the Classic Car Club categories, TR Register was revealed as the National Car Club of the Year with a special commendation for the F1 parade at the Silverstone held British Grand Prix.
Mike Brewer, Wheeler Dealers TV star and host of the event said;
"Clubs had to tick of a long list of achievements to be in with a chance of this award. The judges looked at initiatives to bring in new members, stunning events, web presence and club magazines. In particular our winners, the TR Register enjoyed a string of successes in those areas plus events like the return to Jabbeke with the speed record winning TR2 and putting TRs in front of millions at the British Grand Prix."
The ceremony was attended by some of the various volunteers that had worked on the stand that weekend, including Chairman of the TR Register, Paul Hogan who expressed his delight with the award;
"This truly outstanding accolade has nothing to do with me but reflects the very broad range of activities the club covers. The citation commended our Sprint Championship, the quality of our magazine, the Youth Group, our Web Site and of course the coup of hosting the Drivers Parade at the British Grand Prix.
As in all things the TR Register is a team effort but I really ought to single out both Wayne Scott and Ian Smith for some special praise. Wayne for his untiring enthusiasm for all things TR and Ian for making the British Grand Prix happen.
We are a club of many factions and with many diverse interests and opinions but we have been recognised by our peers to be among the very best and for that you can all be truly proud. I know I am."
There were successes for other Triumph Clubs as well. The Triumph 2000, 2500 Register won Club Magazine of the Year for SIXappeal and our friends over at Club Triumph were awarded the well deserved accolade for Best Run, Rally or Tour for their Ten Countries Run.
The award for Outstanding Club Initiative to encourage the Next Generation went to the National Street Rod Association while the Best Car Club Contribution to Charity, a new award for 2018, went to the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, for raising over £100,000 at the Royal Windsor Jaguar Festival. Best Club Event went to RoverFest for their extravaganza organised jointly by the Rover clubs - a great example of various marque clubs working together.
Another new award for 2018 was the National Car Club 'Young Member' of the Year in the Devoted Members category, which saw the inaugural award presented to Ben Hatton of the MGCC FWD Register. The Unsung Hero of the Year was awarded to Matt Ollman of the Rootes Archive Centre Trust while the Ambassador of the Year was deservedly given to Nigel Thorley from the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club.
The 'At Show' winners saw the Jowett Car Club winning the Best Live Working on Vehicles at Show for the third year running with another ambitious programme of restoration on the club's stand. New for 2018, the Best Live Demonstration on a Car Club Stand at Show was presented to The Porsche 924 Owners Club.
Best Stand and Car Club Display, under 80sqm, went to the Land Rover Series 2 Club, while for the larger over 80sqm displays, the award was given to the International Club for Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts.
The Best Restored Car at Show accolade was presented to Chris Boffey's 1973 Saab 96 on the Saab Owners GB stand, with Best Car at Show given to Geoff Norgrove's 1906 Rover 8hp on the Stourbridge Pre War Car Club stand.
Awards Director Lee Masters said:
"Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the nominees for making it an incredible night. The car clubs have embraced these awards, with more nominations from the clubs and more deliberation from our judges every year."
British racing icon Sir Stirling Moss was amongst those honoured at the 2018 National Car Club Awards, held in association with Tourism Ireland, with 18 awards presented to car clubs and individuals.
Sir Stirling received the Judges Special Recognition Award, sponsored by Lancaster Insurance, for his services not only to motorsport but the time and effort he has given to the motoring community and classic car clubs. The award was accepted by close friend Peter James.
The coveted Lifetime Achievement award went to Drummond Black from the Jowett Car Club for 55 years of service to the club. Since joining the club in 1963, Drummond has maintained his enthusiasm, sense of humour and selfless contribution to this day according to those who nominated him.
The National Car Club Awards are held in association with Tourism Ireland, supported by Classic Car Weekly and endorsed by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC).
The 2018 judging panel includes Danny Hopkins, editor of Practical Classics; David Simister, editor of Classic Car Weekly; David Whale from FBHVC and David Boyce from main sponsor Tourism Ireland.
