Overdrive - Solenoid adjustment

Recommended Posts

Hello

I 've just re-set the solenoid valve/lever adjustment according to the workshop manual which states:

'Slacken the clamping bolt on the solenoid lever, rotate the operating shaft and insert 3/16 pin through adjustment lever into overdrive casing hole. Activate solenoid and move solenoid lever end to touch head of actuating bolt. Tighten clamping bolt.'

I have done the above but my query is should the power stay on until the clamping bolt is tightened or should the power be switched off i.e. the solenoid de-activated. The manual suggests the former as it says disconnect the supply once adjusted. The reason I ask is that if the power is left on there is no movement possible on the lever and the end of the lever is in contact with the head of the actuating bolt anyway. When I test the setting the solenoid plunger shoots up with a loud click, but when de-activated, although it drops, the actuating bolt does not hit the stop or make much noise. On the road the change to overdrive is much quieter and less noticeable than previous and the coming in/out of overdrive is delayed more. Previously, there would be a definite jolt on take up and similar when coming out of overdrive, with virtually no delay. One other point, the rubber gaiter on the bottom of the plunger was loose when I first looked so on re-installation fitted it correctly, but it appears to stop the plunger moving freely so I cut it off!

One final query, should the operating valve be pushed down firmly onto the cam when re-fitting before ball, plunger and spring are inserted. Hope this isn't a daft question!

Any clarification/advice around this area will be appreciated.

Rob
