Derbyshire Dales Social Scene Contribution

Alan Ford says:

Happy New Year to one and all. We hope that Christmas brought all that you wanted, (sorry; I didn't get another TR either) and that the New Year brings all that you would wish for.

At the time of writing it is late November, with memories of our glorious late summer that has just passed, slowly fading ! Derbyshire has just emerged from having been submerged under the first winter storms, with heavy rains having washed away the glorious colours of autumn. By the time of your reading this I imagine the scene will be more that of snow and crisp, fresh mornings. My TR is now garaged for the winter – salt on the roads has seen to that – but I take my hat off to those of you who continue to drive your TRs throughout the year, especially if you live in our part of the world. Certainly, 'back in the day', our first sports car, a Spitfire, served as a 'daily driver' and was used all year-round out of necessity, courtesy of low tyre pressures and a few bricks in its boot whenever it snowed. Rising values and respect for my current old girl preclude such adventures nowadays, though!

There has been plenty of action from our Group during recent evening get-togethers. These have included a quiz night organized by John and Lynne Biggin and won by Barry and Joan Pochin, in a team that included Dave Burgess. In November we had an evening whereby Wayne Scott travelled north to present, along with our Alan Jones, the Derbyshire Dales Group, revamped, web-pages. This proved very interesting and informative, so many thanks to Wayne for giving up his evening to return to his old stamping ground of the Derbyshire Dales, and in early December we will have held our pre-Christmas lunch at the Bateman's Mill Hotel and Restaurant, organized by Alan and Val Jones.

Our cars have been busy also. Barry Cockayne won yet another two pieces of silver at the Rotherham Show in the Vintage and Classic Vehicle Section with his TR3A, winning first place in the 1950 to 1959 Group, and the 'Best in Show' trophy against 130 other contenders. Alan Hawley had his immaculate TR6 on show at the Birmingham NEC's Classic Motor Show, and was up for sale whilst there – and is still awaiting some fortunate buyer. The Derbyshire Dales Group were in attendance in considerable numbers, and following the show on the Saturday, a number got together for a meal along with some of our Norwegian visitors. Meanwhile Alan Wilkinson has nearly finished his next TR6 diesel conversion, soon to be test driven.

Last but not least, at the recent A.G.M. our Group Leader and East Midlands Director Dave Burgess has been 'promoted' to East Area Director. Congrats if appropriate, Dave.
