Chiltern TR Group - "Drive it Day" instructions - 13th April 2024

Dear Friends

Herewith the plan and instructions for our “Drive it Day” run to the Shuttleworth Collection. If you would like to join us, please let us know, if you haven’t done so already. It’s not too late !

Our thanks to Aidan for all the time and effort that he has put into the organisation. We are most grateful.

“Dear Chiltern TR Colleagues,

Ahead of our Drive it Day visit to the Shuttleworth Collection (www.shuttleworth.org) on Sunday 21st April, I would confirm the following journey details and timings:

We are aiming to arrive there at 11.00am, or very soon after and for those who would want to meet us there, we have been asked to use their Alder Drive entrance, which is on the B658 just north of Stanford and south of Upper Caldecote and is approximately a quarter of a mile south of Postcode SG18 9DT.

We should all meet at this entrance on the B658 to then drive in all together to make it straightforward re the tickets and entry, where this driveway entrance is around a mile long.

Otherwise, for the journey there, there will be two meeting points to choose from:

Meeting Point 1 – Large layby on A418 just north of Bierton - Departure time 9.15am:

This is the very large layby on the left hand side on the A418 Aylesbury to Leighton Buzzard road, located 2.25 miles north of the roundabout junction of the Aylesbury ring road and A418 and north of the village of Bierton.

From here, we will drive north east on the A418 toward Leighton Buzzard, through the village of Wing following signs for Milton Keynes & Leighton Buzzard and after 6 miles, we arrive at the large roundabout on the Leighton Buzzard ring road, where we take the 3rd exit to turn right on the A4146, signposted Hemel Hempstead & Dunstable.

Straight over the next roundabouts on to the A505, signposted Dunstable.

This is not the most scenic part of the journey and please note the speed limits and the at least 2 operational speed cameras!

After approximately 7.5 miles, take the first exit at the large roundabout to turn left on the A5 northbound.

In 200 yards, take the first exit at the new roundabout to stay on the A5 northbound.

Follow for 2 miles to the village of Hockliffe and turn right at the traffic light controlled crossroads on to Woburn Road, the B5704, signposted to Woburn & Bedford.

In 5 miles, arrive at Woburn village centre and turn right by the war memorial in to Park Street, following the sign to the public car park, which is 120 yards along on the right and for which the Postcode is MK17 9PG. This is also Meeting Point 2, it is a large free and walled car park and is opposite the large St Mary’s parish church.

Once parked, walk out of the car park and turn left back toward the village centre and cross the road to Flootes (www.flootes.com), where we will take refreshments i.e. tea, coffee, cake and/or sausage rolls etc.

Flootes is located next door to the larger Woburn Village Stores and its veranda reads “Champagne & Wine Bar”. They are expecting us at around 10.00am, we can sit together upstairs and there will be a Farmers’ Market outside the front that morning.

Meeting Point 2 – Woburn Public Car Park – Postcode MK17 9PG – Departure Time 10.30am:

We turn right out of the car park and drive through Woburn Park - please note the speed limit here and the numerous deer!

On leaving the park, we fork left, signposted Eversholt & Ampthill.

Drive through Steppingley and at roundabout, turn right on to A507, signposted Shefford.

Straight over the A6 roundabout at Clophill.

After 4 miles, turn left at roundabout on to the A600, signposted Bedford.

After half a mile, turn right at roundabout on to B658.

Immediately turn left, signposted Old Warden.

After 1 mile, follow road around to the right (ignoring left turn to Old Warden) and over bridge.

Take next left turn signposted Old Warden and drive through village of Southill to rejoin B658 by turning left, signposted to Sandy.

The Alder Drive entrance (just south of Postcode SG18 9DT) to the Shuttleworth Collection is a mile or two along on the left and is clearly signed.

On arrival:

Everyone in each car will be given a free return ticket at the entry kiosk, which will be valid for 30 days.

We will have allocated parking in front of the hangars, along with the other car clubs that will also be there, including a Jaguar club and a Vauxhall club.

Most importantly for the Chiltern Group, whilst the Runway Café on site finishes serving breakfast at 11.30am, it commences serving lunch at 12 midday.

Unfortunately, Shuttleworth House won’t be open on the day but the hangars and the Swiss Garden will be.

Drive it Day Rally Plates:

These can be ordered from www.driveitday.co.uk, with all the profits going to the NSPCC.

Late Entries:

There is still an opportunity for others to join us, where the admission fee remains at £10.00 per car and you can pay on arrival.

If you would like to join us, then please let me know and I will contact the hosts, where they will ensure that there will be sufficient parking spaces for us all together in front of the hangars and they will also have your tickets ready for you.

I look forward to seeing you all on the 21st, where I will be at Meeting Point 1, on the A418 north of Aylesbury & Bierton.

Best regards

Aidan”
