Having lusted after a 6 for many years im just about able to really start to look.

Ive found a very nice '74 import that has had a RHD conversion, is there any real risk in buying this car. It has a full MOT.

Few rust spots on the body work but sill appear OK.

Im based in Portsmouth so any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers - Chris

Hi Chris

A few pointers from a relative layman, but a TR6 owner.  You must get under the car and check where the suspension mountings join the chassis - four front -four back( trailing arms) if cracked -don't bother with car.  Also check carefully where inner wings join outer wings - front is visible under bonnet, rear is more difficult.  Look carefully under headlights for new paint or bubbles. Lift carpets and examine all edges where floor joins sills and bodywork.  If it clunks when you drive off or change gear there could be a problem.

These are not in any order of importance but are all important.  Doubtless you will get more replies offering more or different advice.

Good luck - there is always a good choice of cars in the ad. section of TRaction the register mag.

Phil

I think the best advice I could give you would be find someone who knows TR6 well [your local group?] and take them with you. There are a lot of pitfalls to catch the unwary or inexperienced when buying a classic and the TR6 is no different.

Main problems;

Rust, rust and more rust [chassis and body]

Chassis cracks [ front suspension turrets and diff pins]

Engine thrust bearings

Clonking drive [6 UJs and 2 sliding splines]

If it's a conversion has it been done properly, and is it still fitted with the low compression US head and Stromberg carbs [which is gutless]

Best of luck with your search, take your time and get a good one

Ron

Chris, Have already replied on your other first timer posting but will copy it here:

Hi Chris and welcome to the best car club and forum!   You don't give any indication as to price or whether it has had a body off chassis rebuild, from what you given, £2,500 - £4,500 could be a fair price, but even at that it could be a bargain or a shed.   I'd suggest you get in touch with your nearest local group (Wessex, I think) and ask for help in assessing the car.   According to TRAction, Wessex group meet every Fourth Tuesday each month (22nd June), at Forest Lodge Hotel, Pikes Hill, Lyndhurst on A337 Cadnam to Lyndhurst road, contacts David Woodhouse 01425 477302 or 07709 406789, and Bill Chorley 02380 923492.   Also see similar enquiries under TR6 forum.
