missreading speedo

can any body help! my 76 tr6 never seemed to show accurate speed! needle rarely gets past 40mph the cable is not twisted and moves freely i changed the speedo and the new one is no different both speedos appear to be ok.thanks

Yup! Could be that the drive gear is worn and over a certain speed the gears are 'skipping'. Are you sure the speedo cable is OK. The ends may be rounded which could cause a similar problem (had this problem on an old Volvo 340). Try driving the car with the speedo disconnected (on a private road of course!) to ensure that over 40mph the rotational speed of the cable is proportional to the road speed. Some tape wrapped around the exposed end of the cable would make this easier!
