  1. Nothing wrong with Dot3 fluid other than its lower boiling point than the recommended Dot4. The black sludge you are referring to is the rubber seals breaking down over time. If you arent getting any movement on the slave have you bled the slave cylinder completely and also have you replaced the flexible pipe and cleaned the lines out to remove any other sludge? What type of fluid are you using now? Have you checked for wear at the pedal to master cylinder clevis pin and the slave pushrod clevis as well as if you arent getting any movement on the slave pushrod then its not a clutch problem so far?

    Stuart.

    Thanks Stuart,

I bled the system using the Haynes suggested method (tube from bleed nipple into a small container until no air bubbles). The lines are clean (blew them out when I replaced master and slave with new units) but have not checked the connections to master, will check. Fluid now is DOT 4 synthetic Valvoline.

  2. I replaced both master and slave valves since full of black sludge (now I know not to use DOT 3 fluid).

Bleed system but notice rod on slave that connects to clutch shaft does not move. I can move manually but not with clutch pedal.

My guess (and I am shooting in the dark) is the problem is inside the clutch (worked OK before replacing valves but has been up on lacks in the garage for a couple of years).

    Any help appreciated.

    thanks
