  1. Hello Dave,

Congratulations on your new 4 pot TR – an excellent choice ;)

Regarding books I’d recommend you get a copy of the TR4 / 4A / 5 Technical Publications CD from the Register Shop. This has copies of the original workshop manuals and parts publications. Should certainly help you sort out positions of controls and instruments.

As regards history of your car try contacting the TR4 / 4A registrar (John Marshall). His contact details are on the back page of TRAction. You can also send the DVLA a fiver and they will give you the details they have on file of previous owners. Having said all that I suspect someone will be along in a moment that knows the car – the reg is pretty distinctive.

Regarding the scuttle vent it should be connected by a thin rod to a lever under the dash just to the right of where the H-frame meets the dash. I believe it is a bit fiddly to reconnect / replace the rod but not a major job.

On chassis treatment I’d go with waxoil if you are going to be using the car year round.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the car !

  2. Hi c.j.,

Like many things in life a lot comes down to personal prefernce. I have O/D on my 4A and think it's great. I really like the flexibility of having, effectively, a 7 speed box. I would say it does also help fuel economy but only slightly, although I think the effect may be more noticeable if you are going a decent distance at fair speed i.e. on a motorway. The biggest benefit I find is simply that the car feels and sounds smoother with overdrive engaged - especially in 4th.

O/D was high on my wish list when I was looking for a car and I would be reluctant to be without it now.

    Cheers,

    JA

  3. The TR Register Shop offers a CD with all the TR6 tech pubs on it (CD's also available for other TR marques) - to quote :

"These 'Original Technical Publications' CD Rom are a must for the Triumph TR owner.

    Incuded on the CD are:

    Parts Publications (Parts Catalogues)

    Workshop Publications (Manuals)

    Owners Literature (Handbooks)

These CD Roms have now been updated and are now compatible with Windows 7 & Vista"

Look under "Books" from the menue on the shop front page. Price is £17.50. Make a nice Christmas pressie :D

  4. Paul, Carbs for TR4 / 4A come up on e-bay quite regularly. There were two typs of carb used originally : Zenith Stromberg 175CD and S.U.H6

The Strombergs in particular seem fairly common. A quick search on e-bay reveals a fuly reconditioned set on offer at the moment for £255 but I think you should be able to find "as removed" units for a good bit less.

As Willie suggests TRGB may be a possible source and you could also try TR Shop in London. They seem to stock lots of second hand stuff. Might also be worth putting a "wanted" post on the Buy / Sell / Trade section of the forum. It's not uncommon for folks with Strombergs to convert to SU and hence spare Stromberg sets then come on the market.

    Best of luck :)

  5. Stan,

If you have a copy of the "Technicalities" CD which is sent out to new members when they join the register it contains a considerable amount of useful information on Overdrive issues (see section D8 on the CD). In particular one article contains a table showing which P/N overdrive is applicable to each type of Triumph car. Based on this table the correct overdrive unit for a TR3A would have Laycock P/N A22/61374.

It appears this unit is common to later production (1954) TR2's, all TR3 / 3A cars and earlier (up to 1964) TR4's. In view of this I would think they may not be too hard to find. That said from other things I have read here on the Forum and also from what is in the Technicalities CD there are ways of making various type of OD work on cars they were not originally intended for. However the complexity of making them work varies  and generally seems to involve some significant G/B modifications.

    Cheers, John

  6. Would definitely have used the same (or similar) setup for Lynda's TR4A if she hadn't decided to sell it.

Brian, I had a front mounted electric fan fitted to 393F shortly after getting the car but I didn't bother with a thermostat - just a manual switch. I have retained the original mechanical fan and so far have never had to switch on the electric fan :D

  7. Spotted a very nice looking E-reg Powder Blue TR4A IRS (surrey top & wires) parked in Aylsham this afternoon. It had a TR register sticker in the back window next to a Grantham Classic Car Club sticker. Just wondered if the owner was a known on the Forum and also if the car is now a Norfolk resident ?

Who ever the owner is they have a very smart looking car :D

  8. Hello Tony and welcome to the Forum. I'm sure you will find plenty of people here that are willing and able to offer you advice on all aspects of TR ownership and maintenance.

I'm also a pretty new TR owner (mine's a 4A) so not able to offer you much direct help but I'd suggest you join the TR Register and try to get along to one of the local Group meetings. The Norfolk (Wensum) group meet at Wreningham which is just off the A11 south west of Norwich and the Abbot & Stour group meet near Sudbury. You can get details of all the groups from the menue on TR Register home page.

    Good luck with your car.

    All the best

    John

  9. Just noticed this thread. In the history file for my car there are invoices for body work done by Martins Fuel Injection back in 1989. Their address then was Unit 6B, Parsonage Farm Industrial Estate, Stansted, Essex.

There still appear to be a couple of body shops on that estate but Martins seems to be long gone.

  10. badhuis,

Don't know where you are located but there were a couple of O/D specialists at the International in Malvern. Both are based in the midlands of the UK

Overdrive Repair Services are in Sheffield

    http://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk/index.html

    O/D Spares are in Rugby

    http://www.odspares.com/

I suspect either organsiation could give you further advice.

As others have said I would go with the A Type O/D as orignially available as an option on the TR4 / 4A

  11. My recently acquired TR4A is black – which is its original colour. Although I’m a fan of darker colours (especially dark blues) black wasn’t high on my wish list before I got the car. However now I wouldn’t change it. Not just because it is the original colour but because I really like it and have had nothing but positive comments from people that have seen it.

The interior is matador red (again as original) and I have to agree with TR2100 that a red interior is a great combination with black paintwork. :)
