  1. An enjoyable day at Snetterton today albeit not particularly successful for the Triumph participants.

The Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship race is effectively two races in one - the MGB V8's and everybody else. The V8's dominated overall but the TR's held their own with the other non V8 runners and both Phil (TR6) and Michael (TR4) had spirited drives which they looked to be enjoying. Roy Chamberlain had cooling problems with his TR250 which soon curtailed his practice session and unfortunately he didn't last long in the race either managing only 3 laps. The two GT6's of Clive Gimson and Dickon Parnell were towards the back of the field both in qualifying and the race but again it looked like they were both having fun and they survived without any major dramas.

Here are a few pictures of the Triumph participants :

  2. I plan to be there for both the practice sessions and the race. As always I will be toting heavy duty camera equipment :D. Expect to be taking shots at Corham during practice and at Murrays during the race. May also do some stuff from infield side of the Bomb Hole. If I have time I'll try to drop by the paddock and say hello.

Best of luck to all TR & GT6 drivers !

    John

  3. A total of five TR’s took part in the Aston Martin Owner’s Club race meeting at Snetterton on Saturday 18th July, comprising three TR4’s, one 4A and one 2. Although rather breezy – as is typical for Snetterton – the sun shone all day but, sadly, the good weather didn’t bring much good fortune for the TR contingent.

In race 1, the Innes Ireland Cup for pre 1966 production GT and touring cars, featured the three TR4’s. Car 6 was driven by John Andon and Pete Foster who qualified and finished in 5th position from a field of 11 starters. Car 85, driven by David Allen and Darren Roberts, qualified 9th but apparently suffered some sort of mechanical issue and was unable to take part in the race. The ever keen Pete Foster managed a second drive in the race partnered with Nick Mountford in his number 44 car which qualified 7th finishing one place higher in 6th. The race was won by a Lotus type 26R.

Race 3 was the Equipe GTS which was again for pre1966 cars but with a number of classes depending on engine size. 20 cars qualified with 19 starting the race. Unfortunately the non-starter was the No85 TR4 of David Allen and Darren Roberts which had qualified 14th. Nick Mountford took part in his second race of the day starting from 10th and finishing a respectable 8th following a spirited drive. David Ferry qualified his TR4 in 15th spot but spent race towards the back of the field and was later disqualified, although the reason for this was not obvious during the race. The best TR performance of the day was definitely Richard McKoen who qualified and finished in 4th place driving his No 68 TR4A. The race was won by a TVR Grantura MkIII which led for most of the race.

The last race of the day was the AMOC 50’s Sports Cars race for the Jack Fairman Cup. Mark Hobble took part in his lovely TR2 race number 50. From a large field of 25 cars Mark qualified 20 but sadly retired on the third lap.

  4. Not been on the Forum for a while but I’ve just had my TR4A and a TR6 serviced / prepared for MOT by a very experienced TR mechanic based in West Norfolk. I hope it's OK to mention here but I thought his services might be of assistance to other TR owners in East Anglia who, like myself, are more interested in driving their cars than tinkering with them. He might also be able to help anyone struggling with unusual TR mechanical problems that are proving hard to fix.

The chap in question is Bob Scott. He used to be with Classic Marks in Stoke Ferry and more recently in Brandon but he is now working (independently) out of E.W. English’s garage in Stoke Ferry once again. I’ve known him for a few years and he really is very knowledgeable about all mechanical aspects of TR’s and has worked on them for many years. He knows the various quirks of each model and is particularly handy with gear boxes and TR6 fuel injection set up’s.

I have no connection with Bob other than as a customer but having recently spoken to a few classic car owners that have struggled to find genuinely knowledgeable mechanics I thought I’d mention him here in case it is of help to others. He can be contacted in Stoke Ferry on 01366 500254 during normal working hours (Monday to Friday) or send me a PM and I can pass on his mobile number.

I would also mention that E.W. English are very experienced at doing MOT’s on classic cars and I know that finding such people can also be a bit of a challenge at times.

  5. This is my second attempt at getting this post up so fingers crossed it works this time.

It was a bit cold and grey at Snetterton most of the day and unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I wasn't able to be at the track for as long as I had planned. (Basically part of the Under-Tray fell off my MX5 resulting in a fair bit of messing about in the morning to swap cars and an early departure to sort out the ensuing complications - Yes I know I should have stuck to TR's). I didn't see the Swinging 60's race but I did catch the practice. With luck (if I've finally managed to get the forum to accept the links) there should be some pictures below and I'll try to post a few more if this lot work

  6. Just a small point but not all Mk2 MX5's had the seats with separate adjustable head-rests. I believe these were only on the original Mk2's produced 1999 - 2001. Some if not all the post face-lift MK2's produced from 2001 to 2005 (also known unofficially as the Mk2.5) reverted to a high-back seat albeit different to the ones in the Mk1. My 2002 S-VT sport has the later high back-seats and they are very comfortable. In fact I prefer them to the earlier Mk2 seats we have in the TR6 (which are still very good) but I'd agree the earlier Mk2 seat with the separate head-rest does look nicer in the TR.

Just one Triumph in this race. Car 53 the lovely little TR3 driven by Roy Chamberlain which qualified in 19th spot and finished 15th. I wasn’t able to stay to watch this race but the conditions in qualifying were not great with a very wet track.

A TR7 V8 and a Dolly Sprint were entered in this race but although qualifying went ahead in bright sunshine on a fairly wet track I understand the race was cancelled. Again this was after I had left but the weather was deteriorating and as this was to have been the last race of the day it would also have been getting decidedly dark. The pictures below are from the qualifying session in the morning.

  9. I know this is a bit of a late report but I’ve been away most of the week with work – sat under a B747 in Paris CDG (Don’t ask !). However on my way to the airport last Sunday I managed to catch part of the CSCC meeting at Snetterton and the following pictures show the various Triumph cars (mainly TR’s) that took part. The weather was decidedly changeable with everything from bright sunshine to monsoon proportion down-pours which made for challenging conditions on the track. As there were quite a lot of cars and hence pictures I’ll split things up and make separate posts for the different races.

    Car 10 – TR4 - Dave Bailey, qualified 5th and finished a very creditable 3rd.

Car 15 – TR4 SLR – Steve Chapman, qualified 15th and finished 9th. I must admit I would never have realised this was a TR4 based car. It makes me think of a Pontiac Firebird Transam that has shrunk in the wash – but it’s still a great looking car.

    Triumph TR4 - Philip Btitten - Snetterton - 20Oct13 142 by norfolkjohn, on Flickr

The track was drying after earlier rain and coming down to Murrays Philip seems to have got slightly off the dry line and gone almost straight on. Although there is a fairly wide run off area once on the grass he had no control of the car and hit the tire barrier pretty hard.

    Triumph TR4 - Philip Btitten - Snetterton - 20Oct13 3108 by norfolkjohn, on Flickr

The car finished up almost beside the Marshal’s post and although a little shaken the driver was otherwise none the worse for wear. The same can’t be said for the car and it may take a little bit more than T-Cut to sort out the damage.

Car 888 – TR4 – David Ferry & Guy Heath. Not their day. Regrettably the car only managed 3 laps in qualifying and did not start the race. Not sure what happened but I think it was a breakdown rather than any sort of accident.

  10. Folks - I don't see the big deal with the car being on eBay. If you actually look at the eBay add you will see it is a trade listing from a well known TR dealer (who is also a forumite). The car is also on the dealer's own web site and is listed on Car & Classic. All just sensible marketing I would have thought. In my humble opinion the chap concerned knows his TR's bloody well and is entirely realistic about pricing. If you look at his web site you will find he really does try to stick to top notch vehicles and I have no doubt VUX fits into this category.

I have no connection with the chap presently offering VUX for sale other than being a (more than once) satisfied customer. I can also say from personal experience that he has very good engineering back up and is good to deal with if there ever are any technical problems.

    Just my 2p's worth :)

  11. Tags are just key words that are supposed to make it easier for people to search the forums. In the various technical forums when you start a new topic a box comes up under the title box where you can pick between 1 and 10 tags from a drop down menu. For example if you were starting a topic in the TR4 forum about repairing a body panel you might tag the topic with "TR4", "Body". However it looks like the tag box doesn't appear when you try to start a new topic in the Competition Forum so it appears there is some sort of glitch

I have no idea if you can invent your own tags if / when the tag box appears in the first place

  12. Not such a great day for the TR's at Snetterton yesterday.

Pete Foster did well in qualifying for the Ecurie GTS race in his TR4 gaining second position on the grid but he had a bad start off the line and I think finished in 5th or 6th position.

As regards the different regulations I'm no expert but each series has its own peculiarities. In Ecurie GTS all the cars have to run on historic Dunlop tyres and the TR6 does not qualify by Type. I think Thoroughbred is less restrictive at least for TR's but it specifically excludes racing sportscars - they have to be basically unmodified historic road sportscars. The regs for Equipe GTS (which was on last weekend at Snett) are again, I think, slightly different to either of the other two series. For a lot more detail have a look at these links :

  13. Rather late notice I know but have just realised that there will be another 5 TR's on track at Snetterton tomorrow (5th October).

Pete Foster (TR4) and Richard McKoen (TR4A) are on the entry list for the Ecurie GTS races on Saturday and Sunday having both been at Snetterton last weekend for the Equipe GTS race. In addition Phillip Lambe, Peter Dumelow and Jon Ellison all driving TR6's are entered in the Thoroughbred Sportscars race on Saturday.

With luck I'll be there with camera and will report back next week.

The races mentioned are part of the MG Car Club Championship meeting at Snetterton so plenty of classic MG's, and a few other classic types on track as well.

  14. OK carrying on with the pictures in finishing (well actually retirement :() order.

Nick Mountford - TR4. Started from row 10 in 20th position on the grid and finished the race 15th. Nick was the only other TR driver to complete the race and it is worth mentioning that this is his first year racing and he has completed all four races he has entered which is a very creditable achievement.
