  1. Thanks for the comment Stuart which helps me understand my seats. I bought a pair of rebuilt seats in unused condition privately for my 4A. They look nice and are very comfortable compared with the old disintegrating foams I had. When I fitted them I was slightly puzzled by the shape of the backs which were higher on the outside than the middle. Thinking I had them in the wrong sides I swapped them over. This then jammed them against the door pillars and was clearly wrong. I came to the conclusion that whoever rebuilt them did not realize they were handed and fitted the back foams and covers to the wrong bases. I could swap them around but a hassle I think. The saving grace is that it's a Surrey Top car thus no problem with hood frame. Presume my conclusions are correct ?

  2. Watched the race out at Fordwater and very impressed by speed and handling. The balance in the twisty bits up St Mary's was awesome. Unfortunately not able to get back to the paddock afterwards to congratulate Allan Rees-Jones or look at the car. The campaign to get a good TR entry has paid off.

  3. Hi Jeremy

I fitted carpets to my red 4A this year and agree with earlier posts. I would recommend buying the best you can afford and in my case it was the wool version from the TR Shop in London. I went there and compared cheaper tufted with wool and there was no question which was superior. In a thread last year, Stuart ( spaniel with doogles ! ), suggested the fold test., whereby if you can see the backing when the carpet is folded then it is not a useful long term buy. Don't forget the fitting clips although I did manage to re-use mine.

  4. A brief pre production test was conducted by Motor Sport in September 1961 ( pp 735 ) on the newly opened M1. No performance figures were obtained, but manufacturers data of 0-60mph in 11 secs and 110mph max are quoted. They found the car ( non overdrive ) would easily pass 90 mph and hold this indefinitely. However they were concerned by low water temperatures of 70c at speed and 60c at lower speeds. Clearly the new block had yet to sludge !!

  5. Hi Phil

Just fitting some black replacement carpets to my 4A at the moment. I visited the TR Shop to look at their different offerings accompanied by SWMBO who is expert in all things fabric ( and posing in front of TRs ). We had no hesitation in buying their wool cut pile which looks much superior to the nylon tufted product. Also bought their under felt. Total cost was around £300 I think so not cheap. ( see their latest online brochure ).

I have no idea what the original carpet would have been but I doubt it was wool pile. Time will tell if we got it right, but first impressions are of a good fit and even appearance.

    Good hunting

  6. Well said Stuart, could not agree more. Tracy ( SWMBO, lady in pink and expert seamstress ) and I went to the TR shop other day and looked at their wool and non-wool carpets and I'm afraid you get what you pay for. While their non wool was OK, the fold test showed the backing through. We bought their really nice wool version for our 4A but at £250 it was around twice the price of the numerous ebay and TR suppliers of the non wool variety. We did check out the carpets of the TR4 resto at the NEC.......

Fitting is a job for the winter along with some other interior upgrades.

  7. Thanks Mike (and all the others who contributed ). Looking at the Fernox website I see there are several products such as DS40, F3 and F5. From the data sheets, the pH of F3 and F5 is around neutral but DS 40 is very acidic ( pH 2 ). Which one do you use and any thoughts on conc.

    Your experience would be appreciated.

  8. Dear All

Thanks for your replies on this topic but unfortunately nothing has worked. Filled the system up with water but left the drain plug out for several days. Just a slight and insignificant seepage resulted. Since I am not into taking the head off right now I guess I will refill and carry on as before and hope. Nothing significant has happened in the last few years although I avoid traffic jams and high revs !.

Your advice well received Roger and will follow it ultimately. Still looking for suitable ground to re-bury elephants.

  9. Just re-fitted my radiator to the 4A after a repair at Serck in Peterborough and some nice new hoses for the heater after the steering column had been chafing them. During the process thought I would check the block drain and as expected nothing came out. I have looked at every post I could find on the matter but not really found a good tip for unblocking apart from taking the head off !!

The initial deposit was soft cheesy rust, but so far by using copper wire, cable ties and syringing I cannot get any water to flow through even though I can insert wire/ties about 2" into the block. Is a flushing product the answer or does anyone have another good suggestion. I would very much appreciate any advice.

  10. Not quite sure how these are fitted into the head but I seem to have a continual slight seep of oil around the base of the 4 at the rear of the head. Nothing dramatic but I suppose this has the potential to get worse. Even when cleaned up and left to stand for a few days oil re-appears in small quantities. The rocker cover gasket has been changed and tightened to no avail. Local group members puzzled. Any thoughts please.

  12. Hi Adrian

My pump packed up on the 4A last weekend. Turned out the shaft broke near the thread for the lock nut. Somehow the impeller was turned by friction so no overheating, but a lot of swarf under the bonnet. The pulley and key were not salvagable but a new pump and pulley from TRGB is about £65 plus postage and packing ( I collected mine ) so repair was rapidly effected. They have several in stock. Put a new belt on for good measure.

    Regards

  13. I recently bought a well restored 1967 Surrey 4A which has had little use during the past 18 months. Fortunately it has been dry stored but still a few niggles to sort. With an MOT upcoming thought I would test everything and currently trying to sort the washers. While there is a good flow on the passenger side, nothing forthcoming drivers side. I have cleared the jets from the outside but presume there must be deposit somewhere in the system from a long period of storage. Does washer additive work or does anyone have any bright ideas. The sadist who designed the system seems to have left little room for access, or am I missing a trick.

  14. Hi Riverstar.

I am also a recent TR4A owner and member, and when purchased it was on fairly new Tubeless 165 x 15 tyres but I was surprised that they were 80 section and so it seems to 'stand tall'. I am begining to think this may well contribute to a surprising amount of oversteer which needs careful management. Of course I accept that IRS and standard bushes also contribute. Nobody I,ve seen ever seems to mention tyre profile in the blogs. Views on this might help us both.

  15. I am about to bring red TR4A back to the TR register for the first time since 2004. Having just purchased this nicely restored 1967 Surrey top car I would be pleased to hear from previous owners or contacts so I can build up a history file for future reference.

It is returning to North West Cambridgeshire having previously lived in Wisbech I believe around 2003/2004.

Look forward to hearing from anybody.
