  1. Thanks to you all for your constructive replies.

First of all to Vivdownunder who came straight to the point and answered my question - I have happy memories of a month in Victoria and would appreciate wrapping myself around some VBs in your company !

Alec Pringle, who I note comes from Wiltshire, the county of my birth, who gives some good Moonraker common sense advice and topics for thought. Alan's advice is equally thoughtful. Thanks badfrog. As you are in the business of giving French lessons in another part of the Forum perhaps you could help with the translation of 'non destructive testing, stress relieving and ball peening,' steps which would seem necessary when machining an elderly flywheel.

Finally I have decided not to proceed with this alteration. Although my engine is balanced, the cylinder head has been cleaned up, the ports match up with the manifolds, the passages smoothed up, I have a fast road cam and 4 in 1 exhaust, at the age of 74 I have to ask the question 'Do I really need this mod ?' Although I only use the car for some 3,500 miles a year, I appreciate the ability to cover 4-500 miles in a day and to be able to walk to the bar afterwards. Together we have enjoyed finishing regularity events in a satisfactory position, once again due to age these events are several years behind us. The engine revs in second well above 5,000 rpm and still pulls but I get a bit distressed to see the needle beyond the red line. I appreciate badfrog's comments about improvements to one item necessitating improvements to others but insurance companies don't like TRs with Webers.

Once again thanks to all of you.

  2. I have to change the clutch on my TR4A. The car is mildly tuned to Fast Road specification and the opportunity seems to be there to lighten the flywheel. I would like to be able to improve engine acceleration but I don't want to lose torque or have problems driving in traffic.

I understand that the original TR4A flywheel was, at 31 lbs or 14 kgs, one of the heaviest in the TR four cylinder range, the early TR3 item weighing in at 21 lbs or 9.5 kgs.

What does the forum think about the weight that I should be aiming for ? My gut feeling is that 21-22 lbs might be about right.

    Any advice would be welcome.

  3. Hi Guys,

Regretfully my experiences of a Aldon system on a TR4A are better forgotten. My problems started with the disintegration of the magnet sleeve whilst well placed (for once) on a rally. The delay to replace the electronic system saw our good position wiped out. Some months later the system just died on me, so I replaced the electronics with the original points. In the instructions from Alden the manufacturers recommend that you keep the old system , just in case ! That was all several years back, I hope that they've now got their act together but I'm still with the original system and happy with it.

  4. I'm looking to fit a set of knock on minilites to my TR4a and was interested to know if anyone had any advice regarding size, manufacture and best supplier. Any advice would be welcomed

    Richard

    Beware !

The first set which I had on my 4A, (fitted by the restauration 'specialist') touched on the suspension when reversing on full left lock. The dimensions were incorrect. Result was that I had to buy a second set from Revington. I can say from personal experience that these are made to the correct dimensions.
