  1. The Kas Kastner tuning manuals cover the TR250 and from memory with an S2 cam (There is a comparable Newman cam) comp ratio 10:1 and opening up on the inlet manifold and keeping the 175 Strombergs it will deliver 170 bhp. I used Kastners manual in a similar manner on a 2500S in my rally saloon and the torque and usuable power is very impressive. I use 175 Strombergs from a TR4 on a short manifold on mine. So yes no need for a different head or anything on your TR250, source one of Kas Kastners pamphlet tuning guides and just follow the steps that were very succesful for him in the day.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Darren,

I have a similar box but not Revington.

Does your Momentary Switch ground the input or supply a 12V pulse.  Mine supplies a 12V pulse but is not important.

The inhib switches are normally Open Circuit so if they fail then nothing happens.

However they normally fail by going Open Circuit. Should the internasl fall apart then perhaps they could short out inside and ground the logic relay.

Disconnect the wiring so that only the 4th inhib switch is in circuit and see what happens.  If nothing after a few days then change to the other switch.

    Thanks Roger

    Will do

  3. Im wondering if anyone has experienced tracing an intermitent fault on logic overdrive? (Revingtons variety) I have theories but nothing conclusive. Fitted on my rally mk1 saloon.

Works perfectly on 2nd 3rd and top the momentary switch flips it in and out or changing gear does the same, Its been fitted 12 months. However, in this time occassionaly it engages itself... occassionaly is maybe once or twice every couple of days. Doesnt seem to be related to anything and only engages, never drops out unexpectedly.

Up to now Ive swapped the momentary switch, swapped the relay, changed the box and overdrive unit! Not because of the fault but upgraded... checked the wiring and all appears to be correct.

Theory, maybe the momentary switch type im using is incorrect or a bad batch? Could an inhibitor switch on top of the box trigger it if it earthed against the body or is faulty?

Struggling to find a fault. Anyone else experienced this?

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

    Cheers

  4. Hi Nigel

Look forward to seeing you out and about next year. Thank you for the kind comments I think it's more luck on my part with Susan's navigating saving the day! We've been really busy with launching a new food/snack business and the 2000 has suffered, no catastrophic breakdown but the piston slap and crank case compression are now terminal. I should take the engine out and refresh but money and time are in short supply. I have considered putting the money into the DKW engine seats and harnesses + MOT as thats all it needs but would it be competitive? Not a clue. It's certainly not as quick, but then DKW had plenty of success in the 50s on some of the toughest events. I took the DKW engine out last week... six nuts and bolts. lifted it out by hand and plonked it on the bench!

So we'll be out next year in one car or the other.

    Cheers

  5. It was a blast Tim, cant understand why its not more popular, I can only put it down to marketing and location.

John, Yes, We'd previously marshalled on a Yorkshire event and seen Dave in his Cortina but our last event the Doonhamer was the first event we'd been on with Dave 'Harry' and he was using your Kumho's then. Really throws that GT about and I was glad to be following him in the same minute on a number of the stages on the Hexham as he kept us well on pace. It was our error later on that led him up the wrong slot.

'Harry' came 5th but only because I think they missed a tricky control on a loop early on?

We've used Kumhos which are great but mostly SP85s and some Pirelli GMs from Charlie Taylor. The big Triumph handles better with G5 soft rubber on the front but everyone seems to use G4 mediums.

Just a note to say once again what a superb night event this was. Night rallying nostalgia at its best. Well done to Ed and the team. Highly entertaining, first three TCs to the second, the rest to the minute with plenty of code boards many on extremely slippery whites. 30mph average might not sound fast but trust me it was flat out, hairpin mania with cars running on the same minute. Wrong slotted twice and followed by the very helpful Marsden Garstang Cortina, we promptly got stuck up to the axles in mud whilst the Cortina died behind us with a flat battery! They helped us get traction by sitting on the Triumph boot and the Cortina was then push started, great team work we lost 4 minutes on this section and then we plotted a grid reference incorrectly and ended up an almost vertical white with the Triumph bottoming out on the deep tractor ruts, lost another 6 minutes here. However we didn't disgrace the Triumph brand and despite thick fog in parts, a closed gate, hairy moments and some dubious timing we came in on the minute or the next minute on numerous other sections. We managed 3rd overall, our best result yet. Oh yes and we managed to get

airborne at one particularly interesting set of road works... Yes the instructions said CAUTION and the road works had multiple chevrons and a further RAMP sign and CAUTION board, but with the adrenaline flowing and the skywards pointing main beam not illuminating the size of the ramp I didn't bother to drop our speed much below 50 which launched us on a beautiful arcing trajectory with only the raised scream of the straight six drowning out the expletives uttered by the navigator before we crashed back to terra firma. A great spot for photography but alas no one had twigged this would be the case.

The 2000 performed faultlessly although the winter Falken tyres might as well have been skis for all the grip they offered. Back to SP85 gravel tyres next year.

Well done to the Mini Cooper S of Tyson Harrison and the rapid Volvo PV544 of humphrey & Humphrey 1st and 2nd respectively.

  7. Hi Tim

I don't know but looks like a hell of an event. Just done a quick search and Tony (TR4Tony) has done the event previously he might have a better idea what happened to it when he returns from the Rally of the Tests. Lots of names on the later Targa Rusticana's 2005 who now participate in the HRCR series.

  8. 10 Nov see's us trying to master the Hexham historic for the third year running. This is a good old fashioned night road rally with that lovely period touch of hand drawn tulips by the very friendly Clerk of the Course Ed Graham.

Year one we managed 4th, Year two we managed 7th... this year we should be 10th if the pattern continues! Big offs x 2 last year, which demonstrates for us anyway the difficulty of night rallies, the off road excursion on route took a posse of very helpful locals 10 mins to pull us back onto the road... and only two cars passed us in that time.

To demonstrate to my wife/navigator this year that it was tyres last year that caused us to go off road, I removed the SP85s this weekend and fitted some brand new e marked snow tyres which had one of these lovely new EU reg stickers on them giving them one of the best 'wet' stopping distances in class. I felt a road test was in order to instil confidence in the new rubber.

Navigator on board I blasted up the muddy deluged country lane next to our house and promptly slid off the road onto the verge.... Navigator duly impressed we are now ready for Hexham 2012.

Do not believe whatever is printed on these new tyre labels, it's all made up.

    Cheers

  9. Well done to everyone for taking part I bet it was great fun just to blast round those tests again whatever the results.

The sting in the tail jogularity levelled things a bit last year. Did they run it again this year? There was talk it was to be made easier which they seem to think competitors wanted?

Well done Ryan for first in class and 4th overall... hell of a result.

Tony, first in class in the Clubmans event, a great result with so many cars in this section

Les, well done for 9th in the Viva 'Sauna' with David. Joanne and young Tyler in the rev the *** off Avenger 1st in class as well. Not forgetting John and David 3rd in the Escort.

Wondered why the split of National B and Clubman entries this year? Is it a tyre or technical thing or just fancied a change?

    Cheers

    Darren

  10. The overdrive debate is interesting in that I wouldn't be without one but others equally state weight, reliability and event type being the factors that influence them. From my experience of all types of club/national B events; HRCR, NESCRO, auto tests, 12 cars, scatters, trials, continental regularity/test events, etc I would definitely still spec one and have never had a problem. Yes we do drive our car to events, but overdrive use doesn't end there. On the Throckmorton specifically with its long wide open tests I was popping it in and out of overdrive second last year and whether that was a factor or not we managed a credible 9th scratch (7th by Hero calculations). Not in the TR league (Ryan, Tony, Nigel) but hanging on in there in the 2000 saloon. Our TR4 use to have a racestorations fitted uprated overdrive and that was a positive in/out, no delay, with no slip whatsoever, this was only on 3rd/4th but still really handy for the longer special tests. On the Tour of Cheshire a very friendly ex works driver at scrutineering, wish I could remember his name, was telling me that the works saloons use to have overdrive on all forward gears and they use to use it. I've used the current J type overdrive now for 30K + for all types of comp and not a hint of a problem, although it is attached to its second gearbox.

  11. Really enjoyed this one last year, but also can't make it. Will miss it. Good look to all those taking part.

Nigel... a TR7 as well... you could try some of the Nescro events next year, we've just done the Doonhamer, no regularity between tests, just a day of varied tests on all surfaces and you're pitted against classic and moderns, no reversing... superb fun. In the 2000 we managed 4th O/A! first time out.

varied mix of cars from TRs through 2.3 chevette, Cortina GT, Escorts, Porsche, Marlin Roadster, Amazons, Dolly sprints, Viva HB, Clios, Fiestas, etc etc.

  12. "One thing I would say, though, is this: if your navigator says "left" even though the car in front went right, ask him/her if they're sure (honestly, I always do)."

If the navigator is your wife as in my case I would end this question with the word 'darling' ... (Not to be used with other navigators as they can be quite sensitive about that sort of terminology)

  13. LSD on RWD is useless on ice better without, cuts in an out even on the lightest throttle, progress is slow and unpredictable. Thats with a tranex clutch type LSD, perhaps a quaife type is more predictable. I know from experience in the 2000 you could run rings round it in our renault 5 on ice. In fact the best vehicle I've ever used on ice is our old C15 van (Citroen Visa) skinny snow tyres, go anywhere... now there's a thought for the next winter rally.

  14. Do exactly what the navigator says and as a driver take some of the load off the navigator. Driver can always do speed tables to a degree, stop/start clocks and call whats happening on the ground... keep moving if lost as you might be going in the right direction anyway!

    Cheers

  15. Hi Nigel

Hope to see you out again soon in whatever you decide to rally next, your TR4 is a lovely piece of kit after all the work you undertook to improve it. You don't fancy prepping and thrashing the 2000 about? Probably a more resilient tank to abuse on gravel.

I'm still, after many millennia and two engines later trying to get the 58 DKW ready for next year, fingers crossed, very frustrating, to the point of sitting in it in the garage making pretend engine noises! Don't worry I'll keep taking the pills.

Look forward to reading your decision on the next rally project.

    Cheers

    Darren

  16. It was a great event last year and plenty of TRs about, we even managed 7th (9th on scratch) in the 2000 so the TRs should all be up there in the top 5. Ryan will definitely be the one to watch or catch if you think your fast enough.

    Cheers Darren
