  1. I have a TR4 with dynamo. Did a 2 hour drive on Sunday evening with the lights and heater fan on, and when I managed to stall the engine at a set of lights the engine failed to turn over when I tried to start it. I switched off the fan and it did start, so I got home.

So I now have a suspect battery/dynamo etc. - the battery is around 3-4 years old.

Does anyone know if the loading put on the battery above is likely to run it down? Pretty sure the dynamo is ok as a) the red light isnt on and B) the lights get brighter when I rev the engine.- fan belt seems ok.

I noticed that the ammeter was indicating slightly in the -ve during the journey - so I am sort of deducing that the loading was draining the battery, and that on future journeys I should turn the heater fan off. However, i suspect it isnt that simple.....

    Any comments welcome!

  2. 25 year old tires are extremely dangerous. My father-in-law had very old tires on his truck once, and blew out three of them on a long trip after the truck had been sitting for a while. Wear is not an issue - the rubber hardens, so I think that's the problem.

Now looking to change them asap!

Just did a 4000 mile tour around Europe so feeling a bit lucky

  3. If your tyre pressures are correct, its the tyres, set them at approx 25lbs cold all round to see if the grip improves. Do not use service station gauges as they are woefully inaccurate. If you use your own tyre gauge borrow and try someone else's just to eliminate that the gauge isn't giving you spurious readings.

They tyres don't have to be out of date it could just be the compound. We had a set of FULDA tyres on the TR4 and the grip in the wet was non existent, I would go as far as to label them 'not fit for purpose' and dangerous.

Changed to Vredesteins and they give amazing grip in all conditions even when pushed to the limit.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Darren

I always keep the pressures at 25lb, using my own pump and pressure guage. Looks like I need some new tyres!

I have never heard of Vredestein tyres. Are they easily available and sensibly priced?

  4. Worth checking the age of your tyres as rock hard rubber won't help matters. Easily checked as follows:

The age of any tyre can be found on the tyre sidewall by examining the characters following the symbol "DOT".

For tyres manufactured after the year 1999, the last four numbers identify the date of manufacture of the tyre to the nearest week. The first two of these four numbers identify the week of manufacture (which range from "01" to "52"). The last two numbers identify the year of manufacture (e.g., a tyre with the information "DOT XXXXXX2703” was manufactured in the 27th week of 2003).

For tyres manufactured prior to the year 2000, three numbers instead of four indicate the date of manufacture. Also, during the early 1990’s, a triangle was added to the end of the character string to distinguish a tyre built in the 1990’s from previous decades (e.g., a tyre with the information "DOT XXXXXX274 was manufactured in the 27th week of 1994).

The figures after DOT are FHTB A4M x 145. There is no triangle after the 145

According to your info, I assume that means the 14 th month of 1985.

Guess 25 year old tyres are not a good thing to have lol!

  5. On three occassions now my 1962 TR4 has lost grip with the road and made an uncontrolled slide. Fortunately this has not led to collision, yet, but nevertheless is a bit disconcerting.

It only happens in the wet, and when cornering so maybe I am just driving like a *****. However the incidents occur when no power is applied, and at low speed e.g. at 25 mph around a slight bend.

The car is fitted with Michelin Radials, not sure of their age but they have no significant wear.

I am thinking some new tyres for the winter.

    Be interested in any comments

    Thanks!

  6. Thanks for your suggestions everyone. They were appreciated.

Seems that the feed from the battery to the ignition switch was dead-still dont know why but I ran a new cable directly from the battery to the switch. Now the car appears to work perfectly.

Took me about an hour to sort it out after the Slovenian 'mechanics' had it for a day and a half.

Now made it to Croatia so lets hope we get back!

    Regards

  7. Hi everyone

    In some serious trouble here.

TR4 was going well until we stopped to fill with petrol. Then when I went to start the car it was completely dead. No ignition light, no lights, no anything. Battery seems ok and sparks when p and n touch, earth is ok. No fuses have blown.

Got the aa to take us to a local garage and after fiddling with the voltage regulator the guy got the lights to work, and the ignition light to come on. But the starter will not start from the key, and when started from the solenoid the car will not run.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

By the way, we are in Slovenia (yes, seriously).......and my Slovenian is actually better than their English....

    Thanks in advance for replies

  8. Hi Everyone

After not having enough space to take everything to the International Weekend, it is time to invest in a boot rack for the TR4. Looks like the best type is the one that attaches to the hinges and behind the number plate, I think this is the AMCO type which Rimmer Bros have for £194.34. This seems like a hell of a lot of money for a boot rack.

Be grateful if anyone has any suggestions for an alternative or cheaper option, or a cheaper supplier.

    Many thanks

    Kevin

  9. There's a fellow offering MX5 seats on the Forum (see Sales). I can say from experience - to & from Sicily in Roy Macgregor's TR4 in a really baking June 2005 - that the MX5 seats are far superior to standard TR4. But not original, of course!

    Hi Ian

Do you know if they are straightforward to fit?

  10. Hi everyone

The time has come to sort out the seats on my tr4. They are the original early type (type 1) made from vinyl, black with white piping, and the covers are somewhat tatty.

Not sure what to do, so may fit some more myself, in which case the questions are: Is this easy, where is the best place to get the covers from and how much do they cost?

or should I just pay someone to do it, in which case the question is who can do it properly , and how much will it cost (live in Midlands)? I think I would prefer to keep it original, but any thoughts about whether is worth fitting different seats, or leather covers would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for replies, Kevin
