  1. Perhaps you could put a 30A fuse in parallel with the meter terminals, for peace of mind?

     

    If the meter resistance is comparable to the fuse resistance you'd get a reduction in the needle travel, too.

  3. Jon, there is a diagram in one of the docs I just sent you. The J type is a bt simpler than the A-type since there is no relay and no interlock switch for 2nd in the standard implementation of the J-type (although some of us have retrofitted OD on 2nd) but otherwise the basic operating principles are the same.

  5. My 'six' was missing the console 'kidney' panels at time of purchase (was this a standard fitment on UK '72 cars?) and I've never got around to replacing them. I've now found a trader in the US who fabricates replacement panels, and in view of the favourable US dollar exchange rate these appear to be a good buy. The panels are obviously intended for the US market, however is there any difference between UK panels and those originally made for the US market ?

    I recently bought a pair of these. I haven't fitted them yet, but they are very well made, and look like mirror images of one another ... so presumably would fit either a LHD or RHD car?

  6. Hi Julian,

     

    The number that you have found on the RH wheelarch is the "body in white" number. This number was allocated to the bodyshells after they had been assembled and prior to painting of the shell. These numbers weren't recorded by the factory on the build records. Is the number as per the attached image? The cylinder head number is a stamped number and can be found on the manifold side just next to the thermostat housing.

    Yes, the stamped number on the wheelarch is exactly like the one pictured.

     

    The number on the head, adjacent to the thermostat mounting, is V3059. Does that make any sense?

  7. Hi Julian,

    The engine fitted to your TR6 is from a 1969 US specification TR6. The number should end with HE rather than HF. Its a shame that it has lost its original engine although the previous owner may well have transferred the cylinder head, camshaft and distributor which other than the injection were the main differences between the two. There should be a number stamped onto the head at the front of the engine on the manifold side, if it is 516816 then it is the injection head if it is 516323 then it is probably been a complete engine swap.

    I'm not sure I'm looking in the right place, but I have the following numbers on the head:

     

    A60 307837 18812 V3059 STANPART

     

    I've found another ID plate, on the RH wheel arch in the engine compartment is a plate with the number 50849 stamped on it.

     

     

    Any idea what any of those mean?!

    I can't help you with the "P" however the 1 prefix designates that your TR6 was assembled in the Malines factory in Belgium. The factory assembled some 3600 TR6 there all with petrol injection. The record that I have for your potential purchase is that it was sent as a ckd kit of parts from the UK to Belgium on the 1st March 1971 and was built with engine number CP52929HE. After assembly it was sent to West Germany. I haven't recorded the date it was sent there. Any information that you can provide for our database would be most welcome such as any other numbers recorded, current engine, current / original colour / history etc even an image that we can use in TRaction.

    Hello again Derek,

     

    I now have the car. The current engine number is CC31312HF (are you able to tell where that engine came from?). I am still trying to read the trim/colour codes, but they are either very faint or missed being stamped. A decent photo of the car:

    Hi Derek,

     

    That's fantastic: many thanks. I have many photographs of the car, but few of the whole vehicle. The ones I took of the commission and trim plates under the bonnet didn't come out too well, and so although I can read the commission number, I cannot make out the trim codes. I hope to have the car delivered sometime next week, at which point I can provide more info.

    It looks like the car was originally some shade of red, and has been repainted the current blue. Is it possible the Heritage Trust would have more information? I bought one of their certificates for my MGB GT, which was informative.

  10. I am in the process of buying a '70 TR6 with commission number 1CP52037LP. Am I correct in assuming that the car was

    built in Belgium, originally had fuel injection (it doesn't now), and was built in 1970? What does the terminal "P" mean in

    the number? My impression is that the car was delivered in Germany, based on the commission and body trim plates,

    which are in German.

     

    I'd love to find out more of the early history of this car. Today it is in California, and has been in the USA for at least

    10 years, so I've been told by the PO.
