  1. Guys

Good luck to all those own these 4 cars ,for whatever reason.. I like Triumphs and rallying Triumphs in particular.. Ive built works replica Triumphs (not TRs)and had ex works drivers sat in them for an hour or so, they werent "real "cars but those self same guys honestly said they were no different from those they had driven in period. That was my aim then to recreate for my own use and pleasure similar machines to those of the day.. I didnt have coventry plates or need them to recreate the look , all I wanted was to get involved and compete in a similar machine and try to beat similar type cars of the period. Back in the early 90s I knew people who built and sold cars with ex works plates purely because the powers that be would issue those numbers because no one else had title to them.. those same cars are probably still out there, the current owners 20 years on believing they have ownership of a piece of motoring history where in fact they own a number plate and a car that looks the part to go with it. A few years ago someone researched exactly how many ex-works spitfires still claimed to be in existence, there were more than double the original number of those originally created by the factory. I had a pale blue spit with a 1147cc webered engine, salisbury LSD and an ex Geneva Rally car alloy bonnet .At the end of the day it was still just my car albeit with some rare parts, I never claimed it was anything else , I just liked doing donuts in it!

i think its great that the original cars are preserved ,if a car is built as a recreation thats also good for the marque. If cars masquarade as something other than what they they really are then one can only imagine that the owners view there is some financial gain to be made at some point in the future to be made from selling "a piece of history"... As time goes on what was verifiable 20 years ago for one car becomes more subjective for another for whatever reason, maybe the same expert opinion is no longer around or whatever, but regardless all these cars represent a considerable investment to their current owners who should all be complemented on keeping the interest in these cars and their competition success in period alive and kicking...I wish i owned one!!

  2. I once had a similiar experience with a moss manifold for a GT6 . In this case it patently didnt fit the head properly! My solution was to take it back and ask for a refund ,when they queried it I asked them to get a cylinder head and proove to me it would fit. They tried and failed. That was 15 years ago and I havent been back to them since.

  3. I have used TRGB for my last 2 rebuilds as they send stuff quickly, they're competively priced and always seems to be good quality. They know the cars inside out and are prepared to help out for small items off scrap cars which you cant get elsewhere. In truth when I have asked other leading suppliers if they could send me similar items they havent been too keen to oblige,no doubt they would be if i wanted an engine rebuilt but if I ever do those self same individuals wont be getting a call.

Ive also used TR Enterprises as they are very helpful and knowledgable about competition prep and are happy to help out with smaller parts as well. I think its only fair to try to support those who try to help me.

In the current market I wonder how many of the TR outlets are suffering and if any will not see out the crunch? I hope nobody suffers but I believe the paying public will be shopping around more for the best deals and service and the most accommodating and helpful suppliers should be in a better position because of this.

  4. hi

My tr4 o/d box was recently rebuilt and generally works well but there is a definite stiffness when selecting first and second which we dont get in 3rd and 4th. Neutral to 1st and 1st to second are sometimes difficult to engage and generally feel very stiff.

We use 20/50 in the box and the car has a completely new clutch assembly . Am I just worryiing unneccessarily or is this a common problem/afflication.?

  5. you could try removing the cable and then turning the wheelbox wheel through 180 degrees as it has unlikely been done before thereby exposing previously unused side of the wheel which should have zero wear.

I did this once on a spitfire and it solved the problem, the trick is to remove the cable and not touch the wheelboxes at all until you are ready to spin them through 180 degrees.on rethreading the cable to the same length as before ensures you are on a fresh wheel.

    hope this helps

  6. No I havent broken a hub yet ...... but Andy lane has ..... Im careful ......

The issue is really the (front wheel particularly) bearings and basically if you have excessive play at the start of an event the whole hub and wheel assembly will be in the ditch somehwhere along the route. The stub axles flex also and an anti knock kit helps this (but is actually to stop pad knock after tight cornering) ..... you can go the whole hog and fit uprated hubs front and rear as the race guys do.

I have a spares list which ill download and post shortly. The basic rule is if you can fit it in 30 minutes I would carry it, if not dont bother ...... but do buy an RAC membership and scrounge a tow to a place where they can load you onto a truck.

    Regards

    Tony

i actually changed the wheel bearings yesterday. i saw andy at the weekend and it was him who told me about the broken hub.

i think i will take a stub axle ,uprights and a hub just to be on the safe side. insurance covers me throughout the rally with continental recovery so shouldnt be a problem there. I was curious if there was any regular failures on the 4s that was all,to save my self carrying the proverbial kitchen sink!

  7. Gents

Im starting to consider what I should take to the Alps by way of spares.

Are there any common faults that you have encountered whicjh Id be wise to guard against by taking the requisite spares, i was hearing at the weekend how someone has had a hub crack for instance?

    Any Thoughts?

  8. Guys

Really appreciate your help on this but Ive just realised i will need it to read in kilometers rather than miles!!! ARRRGGHHH ..Maths isnt my strong point so any help gratefully recieved...15 TRs entered on the Tulip now including at least 2 Ex works cars.. I ordered the french Tr book yesterday ...

  9. Hi Alan

    I run a '57 TR3 with 3.7 Diff, A type 22% overdrive, 165/15 Michelin XZX on 4.5 60 spoke wires.

The above should be a good comparison with a standard TR4.

Both my tripmeter & twinmaster run 144/27, and are as Tony says sometimes more accurate than the organiser's Mile <_<

    Good luck on the rally

    Kind regards

    Andrew

I will try this combo first of all as it sounds like it will be bang on. Thanks a lot Andrew

  10. Alan

I was running 142 and 27 in BST82B with 175 x 70 x 15 tyres (was the 4.33:1 diff) and have 127 and 22 in 3VC tonight (4.1:1 diff) - both with 22% overdrive - the variation between tyres is usually no more than 1.5% new to worn out, but if the organisers mile is out slightly (which they always are) you really need to calibrate in each time so a decent selection of x gears is needed. Ive got by so far with 22, 27 and 32 y gears.

Try 127 and 22 - if its reasonably similar you should be within 5% as were never more than that out each time we run the halda.

Better still, buy a Brantz 2 tripmeter as most of the UK rallies will let you run one.

    Regards

    Tony

    Thanks Tony

The infamous Tulip only allows Haldas, ever since someone was caught using a Retrotrip with an average speed computer built into it!!!!

looking at the old RAC form I got with the car I think it is fitted with a 3.7 diff..Any ideas what difference that would make??Ive always been hopeless working out anything remotely technical...

  11. Anyone out there know roughly which cogs I should be using with 165x15 tyres and a standard ratio diff in my TR4...My halda still has the cogs in from my spitfire days and they wont be any good. I dont have the calibration gears to run a test either..

    All help gratefully recieved

  12. Anyone got any idea where I could buy replacement keys for the door barrel lock.Ive looked on the internet but cant find any uk sellers although i saw at least one guy at Stoneleigh . The number shown on the barrel is 891 but i dont have a clue what the prefix letters are as they dont appear to be stamped on the barrel anywhere. Is there somewhere Ive overlooked or does anyone know if they were all FS or WB or whatever?

    Any help appreciated. thank you

  13. Hello Alan,

Will meet you for sure during the rally or at the start. There will be 2 works TR2 in this years tulip, PKV698 of Neil Fender and OVC276, both the only surviving (we do think so) of the original 5 who have participated in 1955.

Will you go to the race retro in Stoneleigh? I think to be there on saturday.

    Regards

    Pascal

    hi Pascal

    Good to hear from you.

I wont be at stoneleigh (still too much to do on the car ! ) but I look forward to meeting you all. For us this will be my 4th Tulip and Alex's 3rd. Last year we used a Triumph Herald and managed to do pretty well, this year we will have more power but with all the navigation maybe we wont need it. Have you guys done the Tulip before?

we have got all our accommodation sorted out now and the route looks like it goes some nice places so i am really looking forward to it.

I think you and the Fenders car must appear on the old rally videos of the Triumph Factory ,I will have to watch them again before the start to get myself in the groove!

    Keep in touch

    Alan

  14. There are now about 7 TRs entered in the 2008 edition of the famous Tulip Rally. This will be my 5th tulip and as far as continental competitive road rallies go this is far and away the most enjoyable and value for money that Ive done, including 9 monte carlo challenges and 8 Classic marathons..

Anybody else fancy a go? Not too late to enter.

If I get a pass for more than 3 I'd be very surprised...Rally of the tests I hear is Bournemouth to LLandudno.. Have you seen the 1989 Marathon footage on the CRA website?

  16. Alan, DVLA records show it as a 1963 car in red first registered in UK on 09.05 1989, but that the last tax disc expired on 30.09 1991. As this seems to have been prior to your disposal it would seem that it has never been on the road since sold. It's survival chances therefore look minimal although DVLA records aren't 100%, and it wouldn't need to be on SORN if it was off road prior to the SORN regs starting. It could therefore be laid up somewhere, or have been sold abroad if it was lhd. Fingers crossed that it's still out there somewhere.

    Regards

    Trevor.

Thanks Trevor. i remember going to Australia in 1992 and the car was sold to fund that trip. It was very straight and rot free so i hope it went on to be sold abroad or re registered as it was far too good to break. Thanks for the feedback though.Did you get those details from the dvla website as Ive got a few cars id like to find out about ? thks alan

  17. Hi Alan

I found the same problem with my TR6. Apparently the gaiters are intended for the Sprite/Midget racks but have been used on TR's for some time. I couldn't get the bloody thing to fit either and neither of them looked right on the rack especially at full lock where they looked very stretched. Eventually I bought some universal ones via the internet that fitted fine. They had about twice the number of convolutions.

Can't remember where I got them but it didn't take much of a search to find them.

    Hope this helps

    Tony

I got these from TRGB and Im generally very happy with their parts. im sure these are designed to fit over snuggly but I just cant see how you get them into postition..
