  1. Babs,

Before you dig in to the gearbox cover its worth a double check that the relay is functioning as desired... with overdrive selected (stationary, or at 50mph if you can multi-task) reach up under the dash to wiggle the connectors of the relay & see if it will engage...

I pulled the fibreglass cover once before realising the relay's existence....

THANKS DAVE, I HAVE ALREADY TRIED TO CHECK THE RELAY BUT CAN'T FIND IT, IT'S NOT WHERE IT SHOULD BE SO WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW THE WIRING.

    REGARDS

  2. Thanks for all your help sorry about the confusion ie hood meaning soft top not bonnet, ivor (88V8) has put me onto a guy in the medway area he has seen his work and said it was the best TR trimming he has ever seen.

Will let you all know how I get on

    Regards Babs

  3. My friend has just completed the four year rebuild of his 3B, which he has carried out to concours standard,he has asked me via the forum for help with locating a trimmer in the Essex or Kent areas who can make a new hood which he wants fitted to the car to ensure it matches the rest of the car which I must say is one of the best rebuilds I have seen.

Could anyone suggest or recommend a contact.

The hood is to be as original as possible to match the rest of the car ie white vinyl.

    Many thanks in advance

  4. Following on from Steves sticky relay,I purchased a 4a in May which has been substantially rebuilt (I am still getting to know the car) and driving to the International (300 miles round trip) found the overdrive to work fine until we were almost there and it started playing up engaging slower and finally not at all.

The previous owner has fitted the light switch on the dash (as a 4) and used the 4a stalk light switch for the overdrive which seemed to work ok (turn on the side light switch and you engaged the overdrive!!)

I have no problem having the light switch on the dash as a 4,however whilst at the show I purchasd a correct overdrive switch, a new solenoid with the idea of doing the less expensive fixes first, after reading Steves article I wonder if I should also replace the relay with a Lucas one.

Problem is where is the overdrive relay located? I have had a thorough search under the dash and cannot acertain it's whereabouts.

Any suggestions on this problem would be most welcome.

    regards

  5. If both discs are in decent condition on both inside and outside, then pulling to the left tends to suggest a stuck/jammed piston on that side.

Both my (disc-braked) TR2 and 4VC had a jammed piston when I bought them - I removed the caliper, devised a bridging arrangement and (in effect) jacked the piston against the chassis - the weight of the car soon shifted the piston and then I just worked it back and forth to get it completely free. Crude, but it worked. Thereafter, just use the brakes hard on occasion and the pistons should remain free.

The reason I dislike disc brakes on the rear of lighter cars is that they are seldom used sufficiently to keep them free - the pistons on drum brakes have to move every time they are used. Those who use their small disc-braked Eurobox for shopping often find the car fails its MOT because a piston has jammed or the hinge mechanism (many have a single piston) has jammed - good business for garages! And drum brakes provide a much more powerful handbrake (except on the IRS TRs, where Triumph cocked it up!).

IAN, I AM GLAD YOU MADE THE COMMENT ABOUT IRS TR'S HANDBRAKE BEING POOR AS MY 4A'S HANDBRAKE HAS NEVER BEEN VERY GOOD EVEN WITH NEW SHOES NEW CABLE ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS ON HILL STARTS THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE SHOES SEEMS TO BE HIT AND MISS I WILL PICK UP SOME NEW ADJUSTERS AT THE SHOW SEE IF THAT HELPS. REGARDS LEE

  6. Hi all,

I am going to renew the front discs on my 4A, is it worth using grooved or vented discs? will it show any marked improvement.

I currently have standard discs with green stuff pads and no servo.

I must admit when I replaced the fluid for silicon,it took a bit of getting used to as the braking seemed a little ''softer'' is this normal?has anyone else experienced this?

    best regards Lee

  7. Hi all,

on my 1966 TR4a the RH hand caliper seems to stick slightly as the car pulls to the left when braking.

As the front calipers are one of the only parts which I have not replaced I was going to replace both the front calipers and also considered grooved discs at the same time.

As the international is coming up soon I was hoping to collect them from a supplier at the show however there seems to be such a difference in the prices, and as this is quite an important item I would be pleased with anyones previous experience regarding the different items available.

    many thanks Lee

  8. Hi all thanks for your advices regarding my overdrive it would appear the the problem is electrical and it most likely is the solenoid.

I have been told that rather than remove the tunnel I can make a cut out in the tunnel to access and replace the faulty solenoid, then fix the cut out (inspection cover) back in place.

A well known TR firm who suggested this could carry this out in approx 1 hour.

has anyone done this? is it easy?

Also if I leave the unit as it is and just drive the car without using overdrive (we are off to France shortly and may not have the time to carry out the work) would this do any harm to the box or O/D

Comments advice really would be appreciated

  9. Hi all, I have been having trouble lately with my overdrive engaging, it comes in slower and slower and today it will not come in at all.

The unit has been overhauled by the firm in Sheffield, also I have replaced the oil in the box/overdrive, any suggestions?

I was maybe thinking it could be the solenoid, is this a big job to replace any other suggestions would be most welcome.

    The car is a 1966 TR4a.

    Thanks Babs

  10. I have just checked the glass bowl on the fuel pump on my TR4a and it is full of ****,as there is no fuel filter on these cars I intend to fit an in line Purolator fuel filter, with replaceable elements in the fuel line , any suggestions as to where this would be most effective,I would think between the tank and pump so the pump and carbs are protected

    any suggestions would be appreciated

    regards Babs

  11. Hi TT,

All I want to do is add a dash mounted headlight flasher and leave the floor mounted unit as it is,so I guess your previous diagram with relay would be the one to use.

As far as the addition of a power socket is concerned I would very much appreciate a diagram showing the correct wiring, including any relays or fuses you think necessary.

Many thanks for your kind help Babs

  12. Hi TT,

As you seem to know your electrics (which I find a mystery) what about the wiring for a power socket (for using a sat nav)

for my Tr4a which is neg earth with an alternator?

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon but I am sure this would be of great use to many people who use their cars abroad.

Although my car is a 4a it does not have the stalk light switch but a dash mounted knob as the 4 so your info on the seperate flasher will come in most handy.

    Many thanks Babs

  13. Hi all again, just got a few teething problems with my new car, incidentally thanks for all your advices with regard to the tyre pressures I will try 24 front 26 rear as suggested and let you know how I get on.

I have another annoying problem when cruising on motorways I get a ''tizzz'' from the gearstick any suggestions, the gearbox and overdrive have both been proffesionally rebuilt.

    Regards Babs
