  1. I have just spent a whole day rebuilding my heater with new foam and seals for the matrix. Whilst bench testing it I found only the third speed worked. The fault was tracked back to the overheat device in the board with the first and second speed resistors. The overheat device (or thermal cut out) was badly corroded so I decided to get one from one of the other two heaters I had on the garage floor. Although one of them worked they were all badly corroded and I decided not to re fit any of them as I am trying to build in reliability. I have ascertained they are not available new so I am left with the choice of bypassing it completely (not my first choice) or hopefully someone has sourced one from another vehicle which can be adapted to fit. Any suggestions?

  2. You have both actually come up with the same solution that I did with the copperslip. However whilst talking to a friend about this issue this week I was offered a tube of graphite grease from an ex Boeing 747 engineer. Worth about £50 for a tube the size of a tube of toothpaste. He reccommended that so i'll give it a try

  3. I am the point where I am about to refit the engine and gearbox to my restored body but I need a question answered. Upon inspection I found that the clutch fork had a split in it where it sat over the pivot ball in the bell housing on my 5 speed gearbox. Apparently this is a common fault on these gearboxes so I ordered a new onw one which arrived today. Should I lubricate this ball and socket arrangement to prevent premature wear with some form of grease? My concern is that I can find no mention of lubrication in the BL manual and commen sence says to me that as the bell housing will be full of clutch dust, will grease or oil attract the clutch dust and accelerate the wear of the clutch fork socket, or should I leave it dry?

  4. When I owned my first TR7 a speke four speed in Brooklands Green thay were considered an aquired taste. The obligatory "are you a hairdresser" jokes abounded and the side screen brigade hated them, so dare I say it they were quite uncool to most of the motoring world. I loved my car and as a teenager in the early eighties I thought I was quite a dude with my new romantic dyed hair, wild wardrobe and four year old shiny wedge. In reality when I look back many people were probably laughing at me the way I laugh at todays youth with their hats on back to front, their jeans hanging down around their arses and their small family hatchbacks with unfeasiably large spoilers and loud music blaring out. So to sum up I thought i was cool but probably wasn't.

     

    Now heres a funny thing.

     

    Where I live in Newquay once a year there is an event called the Run to the Sun where petrol heads fromm all over the country come to Newquay to cruise around the town and party for three days. The town is usually gridlocked and locals like myself stay at home. I was working on my wedge and a group of petrolheads had paked at a local car park and were walking into town but got lost and ended up walking past me and my open garage. They came over to ask directions and were instantly blown away by by my now in primer TR7. I lost count of how many times I heard the word cool and after a prelonged conversation about the car and its history (which apparently is also cool) I realised this group of spotty teenagers had no preconseptons of the car and in their eyes it was radical styling powered by a V8. They were then saying how they thought it was again cool that I was doing all the work myself and they marveled when I explained that most people in the classic car world do their own work. I got down books to show them pics of rally TR7's and there were genuinely in awe. Lots of lictures were taken with their mobile phones and after another prelonged conversation they all vowed to come and visit me at the next Run to the Sun and see the completed car.

     

    How Ironic life can be.

     

    When I was a teenager (about three stone lighter and had hair) I thought I was cool but probably wasn't.

     

    Now I am middle aged have an ever expanding waistline a number 4 haircut two kids and and old triumph in the garage I am well cool!!!!

  5. If you consider that the panels were painted from new and yet within 5 years nearly all TR7s' had rust creeping in those locations. Even if you seal the surface of the car between the two panels the rust normally creeps up from underneath which is much harder to seal. I am in the middle of a restoration and have done the suggested mod and it looks perfect and will never rust again. People often just fill the seam without welding it but because of body movement the filler will eventually fall out. If you do weld do about half an inch at a time or you will get distortion.

  6. Had an interesting chat with RPI a few days ago about mallory distributors. There was one on ebay for a v8 but it had no vacuum advance. Ho told me the racers use those because it gives a few extra horses at high revs but gives a wicked flat spot low down. An earlier quote about the advance curve was correct and the dissys for each different type of vehicle have different curves. I know he would tell me this because he wants me to buy bits from him but he swares you can gain substantial horsepower but using the correct mallory dissy with (£70) magnecor leads

  7. Today, after a stop for re-fuelling, the windscreenwiper and the blinkers did not work again. I guess it is a fuse. But where are the fuses on the US carburator TR8?

    Not sure about those of you who are lucky enough to own a genuine tr8 but on a uk tr7 the fuses are in the glove box in the back behind a removable panel

I started my restoration back in February 06 and thought it would be done in six months It is now 14 months later and its is finally off the body spit and back on its wheels all of the underside has been stripped to bare metal and etch primed and then sprayed with stone chip. Then all of the lower panels were stripped and etch primed as they would be easier to get to whilst still on the spit. Now thay are all done the rebuilt suspension was put back on in a couple of evenings and then the wheels. When it finally sat back on its rubber I could not stop smiling for a week

  10. You may remember before xmas I began to promote a wedge weekend in March including a treasure hunt and a possible visit to the Eden project amongst other things. The initial responce I had was fantastic and if even half the people who expressed an interest came I would need a bigger hotel. Now I understand that Xmas and new year can be costly and most of us need to wait until the end of January before the next wage packet so If you are going to book now is the time. My orignal post detailing the event should still be available and it has been heavily written about in the TR Register and Drivers club magazines. There are also mentions in Triumph world magazine just in case this is the first time you have heard of the event. Booking forms should also be available from S&S, Robsport and Rimmers as they were all sent forms and agreed to distribute them for me.   11. Dear wedge pilots I am planning a weekend away next year and the format will be as follows

     

    The event will be held at The Metro in Newquay Cornwall, which is a modern 4-diamond bed and breakfast.

     

    The format is expected to be as follows.

     

    You can come for as many nights as you like but the wedge orientated portion is expected to begin on the Friday night when we are hoping to run Dvd’s of sevens and eights on the television in the lounge area where you are free to have a few beers or a bottle of wine and relax after the drive down. On Saturday there will be a treasure hunt, which will take you around some of the most beautiful countryside, and coastal roads you are ever likely to see.

     

    I was hoping to arrange a meal at a restaurant for Saturday night if there was enough interest. There is a great local pub used for meetings by my local branch of the TR register, this would be a good venue for the meal.

     

    We would anticipate most people would leave on the Sunday morning after breakfast but if enough people stay until Monday then a drive out to the Eden project may be on the cards.

     

    For wives and partners we can arrange reflexology and pampering sessions to justify dragging them away to another car event.

     

    The rate will be £55 per night per room, which can be either a double or twin room. This rate includes continental breakfast and there are some 2+1 and family rooms available.

     

    Here are some points you should be aware of.

     

    Most insurance policies will not cover you for a treasure hunt. Check your policy, as we will not be arranging separate cover.

     

    We only have 15 rooms at The Metro so spaces will be limited. It will be first come first served.
