  1. Hello all - I am new around here, but have been co-owner of a tr3a for a few years. I have an ignition issue and would like to canvass opinions. The car runs fine, but has a slight issue starting. When testing the ht leads with a strobe we have noticed that number 1 cylinder misses a bit, as does number 2, the other two are perfect.

We have swapped the leads over and the fault does not carry with them, so they are not at fault. The contacts in the dizzy cap are lovely and shiny, so I don't blame them. The gap at the points is right, the coil is healthy.

Now - having whetted your appetites with the problem - I propose getting rid of the condenser/points altogether and getting a magnetic/hall effect electronic ignition system. I have heard misgivings about optical versions of the same (reliability being an issue, but then surely they are more reliable than a condenser etc?).

Many people also seem to say - fit lumetronic ignition but keep your old unit in the boot in case it all goes wrong. What would the problem be with having a spare electronic ignition system in the boot instead (is it just cost?)?

So I have rambled away for too long now. Could anyone advise on:

    1 - whats the problem?

2 - would it be stupid to upgrade to electronic ignition

3 - if electronic is the way to go, can anyone reccomend a system? Petronix? Lumentition Magnetronic?

    Any help gratefully received.
