  1. Does anyone know if a dark blue 7V8 convertible is still around?

I used to own it in Essex in the early 90's. Loud, fast and completely restored I had to sell it when I moved to Dorset. Brought from Harrietsham in Kent; Sold by The Garage at Great Barfield.

It is a rebuilt one using new parts. I will check out the receipt in my history folder over the weekend then let you know the details.

I'm not au fait with all the different distributor models but I'll let you know.

  3. I replaced a worn out electronic dizzy with the Mallory dual points one. It has given me nothing but trouble by burning out condensers.

This summer I changed to an electronic one built for a fast road cam. Best £100 spent at the IWE.

Fitted with appropriate coil and leads it is fine and smooth and got my 4.6 to the Dordogne and back no problem.

  4. I drove up from Dorchester on the Friday in my V8 convertible, 6 hours instead of the 2.5 to Malvern (unless the M5 floods).

Made into hall 2 on Saturday and parked it in front of the Meguiars stand.

But broke down on the hill approaching the gates on Sunday and couldn't get it going.

3 recovery wagons and 8 hours later I got home. Halved the fuel bill though !

  5. My convertible used to push out 330 at the wheels: this was measured on the old rolling road (dialtype) at the international about 4 years ago. I changed the exhaust system so now it's quiter and only about 272 at the wheels but the torque is amazing.

It runs a 4.6 with a race camshaft, Holley, edelbrock, and a stage 2 head ( I think). The rad is a custom built 5 core to keep it cool. Easy to drive over 45 mph but lumpy around town. Fuel consumption 25 - 30. Brakes are revington kit and stop like a 2010 car. It takes a lot of work and a lot of dosh to get 300 bhp. But it puts a huge smile on your face!

  6. Hi, I am looking to replace my tyres on my V8 convertible and wondered what brands would be best? Size wise the fronts are 215/40/16 and the rears are 245/45/16. Mostly used in the dry and only road use. Car has PAS. Need to be able to handle 342 bhp at the wheels. Mileage. only do 3k p.a tops.

Your best bet would be to give S+S a ring - they're generous with free advice, and will almost certainly be able to fix you up with what you need.

    Thanks Mike,

Guess I will give them a call. Probably need to take the car there. Dorset to S&S and back, that'll be my limited mileage blown in a weekend!

    Appreciate the advice.

  8. I am thinking of purchasing a new exhaust system for my 4.6. Stainless steel. The existing heath robinson arrangement is starting to blow. The problem is I don't know which one wil fit. This car's previous owner hand fabricated the down pipes from the manifolds to squeeze in the power steering. Can anyone advis of the diameter of the exhaust where it meets the down pipes, and how far apart these down pipes should be? (not that I can move them)

In my previous 3,5 I had an S&S s/s twin pipe 4 box and h pipe balance which worked a treat, wonder if this would do the same.

Any help appreciated, Car in the bodyshop getting ready for the summer.

  9. I pulled into a rural filling station close to home in rural west dorset. Filled up the 8, (ouch) and the owner of the garage started chatting. If anyones interested he has two 7 FHC, one a V8. A trailer load of spares. The V8 has FIA papers, was apparently quite well known in the late 70's. Neither MOTd, the V8 S reg is the tattier, but couldn't see any rot. The 2.0 is much tidier (but I didn't see it). If anyone is intersted contact Rodney at Frampton Garage, Frampton, Dorset. If only I had the room!

  10. Hi Kevin,

the previous owner of my car did the conversion himself too. He fabricated downpipes, had a 5core radiator custom made, alyered the sub frame, moved the engine & gearbox 2 inches further back than standard conversions. I can give you his details if you're interested.

    4.6lt 340bhp.

  11. Are there any tr7v8 s on the register running a 5.2ltr engine? I have seen one such car in a magazine. I know there are a few 4.6 but has anyone gone further?

What gearboxes have people tried D suffix Lt77, R380, Borg and warner T5 from TVR?

I run a 4.6 with some mods; Edelbrock manifold, 4 barrel Holley, road race cam, power steering etc. Not sure on the gearbox, looks like a standard 5 speed with shortened lever. I bet the 5.2 goes like s##t off a shovel; personally I have enough power to cope with "340 bhp if you believe the rolling road at the international"but I think a 5.2 would be "exciting".

good luck if you go for it.

    Jo.

  12. Check all of the bolts on the trailing arms/top links at the back & the top links. Loose bolts produce a clonk which will travel up the sill, believe me. Also check the exhaust as it goes past the gearbox cross member.

    Thanks Cinnobar,

I appreciate the advice & will investigate. Will let you know what happens,

    Jo.

  13. When do you hear the clunk, Under acceleration, braking, cornering hard cornering? A clunk from the front could be any number of things is the subframe secure? Have you checked the things that hang off the suspension eg calipers, are the wheel bearings ok? More info required.

Good points! It is a low speeds, usually when starting off, especially on a bumpy road. Live in the sticks so most roads are bumpy. No clunks at speed or cornering hard or fast. Might try & listen if it is when turning left or right at low speed. Can hear when in a straight line; I'm running out of ideas, apert from the trapped golf ball.

    Thanks

    Jo

  14. :( There is an annoying clunk at low speeds coming from the front nearside of my 4.6. It sounds like a golf ball rolling up & down the sill cavity! I have had the front shocks changed (they need it), The top suspension mounts (they didn't), all other suspension is fine. Might be the exhaust but when the car is on the ramp it's impossible to make the exhaust hit anything. Passenger can feel the clunk by their left foot.

Any ideas please? Anyone want a spare golfball?

  15.

The DoT recently announced that it thought it was losing the battle against the EU regarding the proposed law changeabout headlamps. The EU want all european countries to adopt driving with headlamps on 24/7.

I understand that this will improve road safety which is definitely a good thing, but my headlamp motors will wear out quicker & the car won't look so good moving in the daylight.

Don't want to advertise 342bhp of TR approaching the rozzers either.

Just wondered what other pop up headlamp drivers thought about this backdoor legislation.

  16. mine has chewed 3 starters in 2 years. 4th fitted yesterday. Ordering a high torque one for the next time, don't want to be stuck. Remember my previous one chewed starter motors too. Is it a common failing?

    Jo

  17. luckily Boots no.7 is more chip resistant than my paint.

    Jo

well I said the shocks wouldn't fit; I was right. Apparently the 5 stud conversion takes an SD1 Vitesse adjustable spax insert, slightly different size diameter nut at the top etc. So car stuck on ramp, correct shocks arriving Friday, carrier willing. Guess who's Mr Popular at the garage, tying up the ramp.

  18. :( well it never rains but it pours, although not this coming weekend I trust. Just got my 4.6 convertible back from the bodyshop on Saturday, having had the stonechips "done". Drove it for only the 3rd time this year (back from mot, couldn't get it there, over to the bodyshop & back).

Taking it to the workshop for new front shocks, called in at home for them on the way from the bodyshop. Put them in the boot, went to start the car & the starter motor failed, 3rd one in 18 months. Tried to rock it in 2nd gear, noticed my metal watch strap had just put 3 or 4 chips into the paint by the rear o/s light cluster.

So definitely no concours, but perhaps pride of ownership or just put it on the rooling road & see if it goes off the dial like last year. The way my luck is going I probably won't get it back from the garage on time for Friday; "sorry mate, couldn't fit the shocks"; who knows. Probably end up in the focus with failed air con.

    Jo.

  19. I like this idea of having one in the cluster, how do you go about wiring it up though. I'm having no luck with my seperate lamp, it worked when it was on another car but refuses to work on this one - unless the wiring or switch is at fault.

Now that's the tricky question; luckily my local garage who does the MOT miraculously wired it in. Mr Motor Repair Company in Beaminster, Dorset, 01308 863207 ask for Marty & say that Jo with the TR8 made the recommendation. Great garage, a customer of mine & I am usully invited to their Xmas party.
