  1. Many thanks to you all for the information supplied. The problem is in the process of being solved as I noticed several other small issues that I also need to sort out at the same time!!

  2. I used HS6 carbs when I rebuilt my 64 TR4 a few years ago instead of the strombergs

I suspect I fitted the throttle connecting rod the wrong way round but it worked fine till recently when the engine races at rest indicating the butterflies haven't completetly closed

Doe any one have a pic of the linkage set up on a late 4A with SU's so I can check my assembly please?

    Many thanks JamieĀ

  3. I have fitted HS6 carburettors to my TR4 but am getting a leakage where the flexible pipe goes into the bottom of the jet. I have made a very temporary repair but what is the best way to seal this pipe so it will not leak in future?

    Many thanks,

    Jamie

  4. I certainly would not use an EP 90 grade oil as there can be a problem with additives and the clutch cone. I have used ordinary SAE 40 grade engine oil in 3 of my overdrives and this seems to work well. Sometimes the additives in a multigrade oil do not go well with the cones, this seems to vary with the make of oil.

I have also used automatic transmission fluid with success but have reverted to SAE 40 as it seems to work.

    Hope this helps.

  5. I used the 6" Oz Minilites when I rebuilt my TR4 as they didn't do a 51/2" which I would have preferred and the 5" didn't seem any advantage over the 4.5J as standard. The wider ones look good but do protrude slightly from the front bodywork.

I used 185/65/15 Yokahama tyres after very good performance with a similar tyre on my TR6 and am very pleased with them, would really recomend them to anyone and good value!

    Hope this helps

  6. I fitted the TR Shop conversion to my 4 as I was used to driving a 6 which has a servo. Makes a huge difference compared to a 3 without servo.

Incidentally, the server from the Toyota Corolla or Verso (that is the SA name not sure what they might be in UK) fits perfectly and is half the price second hand

  7. Ian, many thanks indeed. That makes great sense and I saw a TR4 competing over here a couple of years ago that had that same arrangement to a catch tank. I was somehow concerned about oil ending up in the brake servo which is probably not going to happen given the vacuum in the manifold!

Did the arrangement on the TR4 work when it went back into the air cleaners? Would you use a catch tank for non competition?

  8. I am busy running in my 1964 TR4 and touch wood all is going well apart from one relatively minor problem.

It is fitted with a vented rocker cover to which I have attached a small fuel type filter. I have fitted a servo brake unit and this is connected up to the inlet manifold via the tapping into the manifold. There is no connection between the rocker cover and the inlet manifold at this stage.

What seems to be happening is that there is a small amount of oil coming from the filler cap and leaking down at the back of the engine. I am wondering if I am generating too much back pressure into the rocker cover from the crankcase and whether I should replace the filter for a direct connection into the manifold via a T piece into the pipe from the servo unit to vent the rocker cover properly.

Would really appreciate every one's comments.

  9. I have fitted a thin belt conversion with an alternator on both a TR3 and 4, having tried to fit a thick belt onto a TR4 on the road, the thin belt is brilliant! I used the TR Shop one which has the damper on and have fitted an elecric fan, also a good conversion!

  10. Nick, many thanks. I think mine is an original 4, been via half of Africa, but there doesn't seem any way to get it near the chassis without crimping it! It is a 64 version with o/d, was there a change to the spec needing an angle drive? If I can get away with out it it would be a major plus as the repros are very flimsy!

  11. Have got my TR4 back on the road and busy de snagging prior to roadworthy (MOT)

I am having problems with the angle drive on the side of the gearbox that connects to the speedo. The actual cable runs pretty smoothly and the speedo registers but when I connect the angle drive onto the gear box it runs for about 100 metres and then strips. The drive is relatively loose on the gearbox even when the connector is tight and when I take it off there is virtually no drive to the speedo due to the gears not meshing properly. This is now the 3rd drive and all seem as bad!

Has any one had similar problems as the unit appears very fragile and there seems no way of re engineering the gear system or even getting at it?

    Many thanks, Jamie

  12. Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. Ultimately the problem was the alternator regulator which went ballistic every now and then and fried the stailisers. Have repaired the alternator which was ultimately due to poor design of the regulator connections and all seems well now. Just refitting doors which is becoming a mission to get the gaps right........!!!!!
