  1. Red 6 and SDerbyshire both have a point, I'm afraid. You have to be able to live with the noise. My 3-into-1 manifolds each feed a straight through exhaust. Drivability is great, aesthetics are good, but the exhaust note is tiresome on the motorway. It may even be too loud for track days where they check the noise level. Drive a similar set up before you take the plunge!

  2. Gents,

I am humbled by your swift and comprehensive responses. Thank you.

Stan, I hope the storm leaves you in peace, Guy, I hope your dog is OK after its trip to the Vet.

I attach a quick view of my starting point - a nice man restored the car in '95 but brazed the wings on. And then cosmetically bolted them so you couldn't tell. How I laughed when I realised that I'd have to cut the wings off to access the sills and A-post....

    Cheers,

  3. Hi gang,

A 'simple' replacement of my sills is turning into a longer job than I had anticipated. Corrosion in the inner wings has been repaired but I'm now into replacing the whole rear valance (I think). There might be some mileage in cutting the off the lower outer half to reveal the worst of the corrosion.

I saw an excellent thread here a couple of years ago by someone who had ground out the spot welds and replaced all three pieces, I seem to remember, on a blue TR6. Does anyone have any pics they could share of this operation? Close ups of the wing/valance joint (front and back) would also be much appreciated.

    Cheers,

  4. Dear Monty,

I'm afraid that I have to agree with Ron.  I have a temperature probe in the sump plug of my TR6 and it only gets up to working temperature, 80degC, when driven hard (i.e on motorways).  Knowing how hot (or not) the oil gets has led me to dismiss the idea of fitting a cooler.   You're absolutely right about a hot day though - driving hard to the international for example might tax the lubrication system, but not as much as repeated cold starts, short runs or old oil.

As for the air flow debate, I'd fit the cooler and not worry about the numberplate issue.  On a standard day, air pressure is 14.7 lb/sq in - quite capable of flowing round obstacles.  The oil will be losing heat from the pipework and radiator anyway and you've a higher capacity of oil to start with.  Fit the cooler and come and help me with all the jobs I've to do on my car!

    Cheers,

    Malcolm
