  1. So.....

I have tuned the Strombergs with the allen key tool today, balanced them and test drove the car without the air filters on - the car ran very well at that point - no issues. Then I placed the air box on, test drive and now the car is running poorly again.

It seems to me that the mixture was right prior to the air box going on and then less air going in and the car may be running too rich. Has anyone get any tips on this? Do I adjust / weaken again once the air filter is on.

    thanks in anticipation

  2. There is something not quite right I think. Help please.

    Carbs

I have a 1969 TR6 Federal model with Stromberg Carbs. I have just serviced the carbs and the car is now running poorly, it feels like fuel starvation.

Now here are the issues - which I am bewildered on.

1st of all the the float chamber plug screws in with a rubber o-ring - I assume that this screws home and is not for adjusting?

The upper air valve has no mixture adjustment - I thought that this would be done via the special allen key tool?

I cannot get the needle assembly out - it is hard in even after undoing the keep screw - any ideas on how this can be removed without causing damage to the air valve?

So, to my confusion - I am now not sure that I have the right air valve / carbs in place - top covers say 175 CD2 whereas the manual states 175 CDSE. Thoughts anyone:unsure:?

    Distributor

The Micrometer adjustment nut is missing and therefore it seems to me that the distributor is unstable (not fixed). so I have put a nut on and have adjusted a few times and the timing is now out. So now more confusion on the running issues. I guess that this is a case of setting up the timing? Has anyone change the distributor set up to electronic rather than traditional points?

sorry to share my project - I cannot understand how everything was running so well until I decided to service the carbs - oh why did I make that decision!

  3. Hi Jamie, I had this on my 6 a year ago, mostly dropping out on the overrun approaching traffic lights/ junctions etc. Then started doing it in 2nd gear. Took g/box to ORS, think they said it was the synchro rings and some other bits worn. They rebuilt it, now good as new.

Thanks Vince - what was the cost as an indication?

  4. Hi Jamie,

could be a number of things. The easiest is to check the big rubber gaiter at the base of the gear stick.

If you accelerate In 3rd the GB will twist slightly. This causes the gearstick to hit the gaiter and knock it out of gear.

If the gaiter is OK then have a look at the front engine rubber mounts - do these look either oil soaked and soggy or squished.

Then look at the rubber mount under the a rear of the GB - this often gets seriously oil soaked.

If the above is all good then it could be the GB internals.

    Hi Roger

There is something in your response, predominantly the gaitor, that I would like to ask you about. It drops out 3rd on deceleration only, I have a funny feeling that maybe the gaitor is knocking it out. What would be the remedy on the gaitor - removal?

It is not an apparent problem on acceleration or normal running.

I am tempted to take the top off the box and renew the selector mechanism - but will this assist in any way? what do you think? I looks to be a fairly straight forward job!

    many thanks for your help

    James

  5. Help please?

I have a noise on the offside rear - prominent on right hand cornering. Sounds like a rubbing noise from the wheel under stress of cornering - nothing too dramatic, low pitched. I would normally say this was a bearing but has anyone any other ideas before I order the parts?

    Thanks

    James

  6. I would like to share my experience - I removed my AC fuel pump this weekend. On opening up and removing the fuel pump, I was astonished to find the inlet port rammed full of rust particles. I am astonished that the car was running. My advice to owners is to check your pumps by simply removing the top dome and filter, and cleaning out as necessary! Block the outlet port before cleaning!
