  1. Well Graham thats a much wider debate. You could also argue we should all pay road fund licence - why should a few, mainly well healed retired blokes get their hobby subsidised by getting free car tax discs every year? What is the environmental impact (whole life costs etc) of encouraging people to keep 50 year old cars running as opposed to encouraging them to buy large gas guzzling SUVs that they swap every other year? Also, I, like many others on this forum no doubt, pay quite a lot of tax and addiing up my demands on society I think I pay out quite a bit more than I get back but I don't generally get too excited about this. Finally the impact of classic cars on the tax bill of the country as a whole probably isn't that great.

     

    All you can do is play by the rules. Its not a complicated tax avoidence structure - its just running a company car based on the rules as they stand. Thousands of employees every year are faced with the decision - do I take a company car or do I takes the cash? They do the sums and pick the most cost effective option.

     

    If you want to look at fiscal responsbility - take looking after my old granny. My family have got a bob or two but we are not milionaires. We decided that we wanted no part in gifting away all her assets and then getting the local authority to pay the fees. Granny went into a nursing home with severe dementia and lasted about 15 years and we picked up the bill. I think the last year's fees were about £23,000. Multiply that by 15 and we could have bought a few TRs with that. Hell, when TR5s were sensible money it would be the founding of a national collection!!

     

    Also, surely the last place for pious self rightgeous posturing is a site devoted to preservation and general trashing of cars that only carry two people, drink far too much fuel and go far to fast for no good reason. I can only urge such people to sell them and post the funds to a developing nation or their choice and enter a (beer free) religous foundation. It must be hell wrestling with your conscience each time you step on the loud pedal!!

     

    Anyway hopefully haven't alienated the whole forum already. Sorry, its just a Yorkshire thing - can't help it.......

     

    Finally, having read many of Mr Pringle's previous posts, I can't help admiring such a grumpy git. You are not from God's own county are you?

  2. I have no intention of making a profit on sale. Simply finding the cheapest way to run the car. If you can arrange your affairs to do this why not? plenty of Tr owners have spent a lot of time working out how to run these cars on the cheap - their low running costs and canny ways to keep then going on a shoestring are possibly two of the reasons why many survived (not forgetting looks and fun to drive!) Given the cost of Tr parts and then adding 20% Vat, it seems sensible to me to try and minimise these costs. It just so happens that for non exotics (remember the rules say cars worth £15,000 or less) it seems a cost effective option.

     

    I'm definitely not a recent triumph convert looking to make a quick buck - I've loved TRs since a saw a picture of my dad in his TR2 when I was 10!

     

    Re Vat on sale - I think you can use the second hand goods scheme so that you would pay vat on any profit, not the whole price. Yes, you would pay tax on any increase in value but the costs are delectable- anybody yet found a way to properly restore a tr4 and find that it's worth more than it cost?!!

     

    finally, given the rules I think it needs to be a company car rather than run by the self employed. It's a bit complicated but revolves round the rules on disallowing the private use element of running the car.

  3. Paul thanks also. Did know about them being free of CGT but not in it for a tax free gain! More to subsidise running costs and doing it up a bit.

     

    BTW only mechanical items are completely free of CGT - clocks, guns etc. Paintings and furniture are caught (but assets worth less than £6000 are free of tax under the "small chattels" exemption which clearly covers a lot of antiques). In short Paul, don't sell the Rembrandt unless you skip the jurisdiction first!!

    Yes, tax angle is looking at running via company - if open market value today is less than £15k then it's 32% of original list as an annual benefit in kind. So on those numbers it's about £320 pa at your marginal rate - a cost to a40% payer of about £130. Running costs tax deductible and vat to recover!

  5. Hello. First post but been loitering for a while and picking up loads of useful info. To give you a bit of background, I have recently bought a 1964 tr4 and live in Ripon N Yorks. I am a member of a family that has had various triumphs over the years (in the sense of cars- not achievements!) - Dad ran a tr2 in the late 50s/ early 60s and then a brand new spitfire, a couple of 2000s and a couple of stags and mum ran a herald for a time (Rowlands in Knaresborough were a triumph dealer in the 60s and 70s and most came from there). I owned a spitfire as a student and for a few years ran a tr3a (sold 6 years ago to brother in law for far too little money in hindsight!). Ran an Elise as a silly car after the tr3a but somehow found it boring- ended up buying another spitfire recently (too cheap not to!) and it made me realise just how much I love driving classics - hence the tr4.

     

    Anyway, to cut to the chase, for tax reasons, I need to know the original list price of a 1964 tr4 with heater, wires and o/d including purchase tax. Anybody got a 1964 price list?

     

    Lots more daft questions to come as I start taking bits off it and putting new bits on!
