  1. Thanks guys. I agree. Have lost any confidence in this guy. I will keep you updated. Difficult to progress this whilst I am stuck in the office and the car is stuck in this guy's garage. It cannot be moved now without a trailer...

  2. Thanks Neil.

I spoke to Red Baron who had called the Lemaco chap. They also think the explanation is iffy ("the Crank is not driving the valve train"). They think there is likely a metering unit issue. I suspect that Lemaco have less experience with TRs and even less with PI cars (however nice this chap is I don't think he knows what he is doing on this motor and he is under water with other cars being a classic generalist - MGs, Jaguars, Healeys, etc). I called Lemaco and told them to down tools. I have agreed to see their sheet for work done to date and we will agree a price (not a big amount). I will then trailer the 6 to Red Baron end of next week to sort this out.

I just wish this had been done in April. Grrr!

  3. So a (partial) update on the 6. It's been in the shop since April (don't ask - welcome to Belgium). I got an update yesterday which to be honest I don't fully understand. I was told there was slack in the timing chain and at the same time the camshaft would not turn over. I think the implication being that the lack in response is as a result of play in the timing chain and resistance in the camshaft. The chap has removed the distribution and he is checking further.

I have called the Red Baron Garage and asked them to call this chap to make sure I have fully understood this (my technical French is limited). I also want a sanity check on this...

  4. Interesting read, so according to fact 3, a simply repaint would be considered as irreversable, so the car would be restored and not original.

Also to read: "Finally, the Car Owner’s mission is usually to receive recognition."

I was wondering how in fact you can verify the originality of a car. Take my 1974 TR6. It was restored in 1991. I know this because I have a full history file including polaroids of the car as a shell and some chap who looks like Kenny Sansom working on it.

But imagine if the seller had told me this was a "sur-vi-vah". How the hell would you know the difference between 23 year old patina and 40 year old patina (excluding the restorer's marks and scratches, etc?). I recall when I had the Stag repainted the chap who prepared it and sprayed it said it was one of the best shells he had ever seen. He re-applied Sapphire Blue. He could not believe it when I told him the BMHIT certificate listed it as being Jasmine on delivery - he could not find a single trace of Jasmine on the shell (it's a shame it was resprayed otherwise I could have called the car "Jassy Jeff" - with me being "the Fresh Prince").

I am sure the techo-gods out there (yes you know who you are) could readily tell the difference between a sterling, first-rate older restoration and an original car. But I think there would be room for doubt on any car lacking a continuous history file (one owner since birth, etc). And when there's room for doubt, I would be concerned that if too much value is placed on originality, this is just an invitation for fraud.

  5. I just wonder what is the definition of original here? Is it that the car is entirely untouched, nothing replaced except for disposables? Is there a notion of what is acceptable and what is just a worn out shed? Is there an accepted level of verified kilometrage above which the car's value/status falls?

I agree with Paul here - separate registers for those within a certain circle is divisive and will lead to all sorts of handbag moments and frankly we have had enough of those in the past.

  6. I sympathise with the OP. I got my certificate and realised my Sapphire Blue/Black Interior Stag was originally Jasmine with a Saddle Tan Interior. So mine was a like a Cream Egg past its sell by date.

  7. Agreed. I just don't know who would buy it though as there is so much choice here. Anyone having done their homework would pass on this car. So my advice, is you have two options:

    1. Drive it to Le Mans Classic, pay to park in the "ancetres" parking, put a large sign on it saying "A vendre" and see what interest/offers you get. You may come back with an empty trailer but perhaps not as much cash as you had expected.

    2. Further convert it into a race TR6 and market it on that basis. You may need to invest more cash into it, but you may get something back. Discuss.

Whatever you do - good luck!

  8. I have some experience of this.

Just from a cursory review of the photos, 18k euros feels a little stiff for this car. By all means market it at that price, but be prepared for it to sit around for a while. Look on www.autoscout24.com and do a search and you will see a number of 6s in Benelux (43 in the Netherlands, 16 in Belgium alone). Take this one for example - okay its been restored but it's on for 18.5k euros. http://fr.autoscout24.be/Details.aspx?id=236573558&asrc=st|sr

Pay what you like for patina, but it still feels strong money for this car. I bought my car just over a year ago. 1974 PI car, original Belgian car (not a US import) which had been owned by the same owner for 21 years. Solid chassis, no rust, good body with only a minor amount of filler in the very bottom of the passenger side door. Original hardtop and documents, including 1974 bill of sale to the first owner. And I paid less than 16k euros (I have subsequently had it valued for 3k euros more than I paid for it).

So my advice would be - if you want a quick sale - lower your estimate. Otherwise be prepared to hang around. The five 6s for sale in Hoogstraten have been on sale for more than a year (as has the blue one in St.Truiden) and I don't expect them to go soon.

Question - I note this car has the "TR6" decals on it. I had thought that all US imported cars (as this claims to be) were all delivered in the US with the Union Jack decals on them? Am I wrong?
