TRs, Towers & Turbulence: A High-Flying Day at Greenham Control Tower
The Kennet Valley Group enjoyed a thoroughly rewarding and uplifting visit to Greenham Control Tower, where history, camaraderie, and a shared love of motoring came together beautifully.
Five TRs made the journey, proudly representing the marque, joined by four members in their everyday cars proving once again that it’s the people as much as the cars that make these events special. Adding a unique touch to the day was a Greenham volunteer’s Morgan, which joined the line-up for a memorable group photograph outside this remarkable and rare surviving example of a World War II control tower—the only one of its kind in the UK.
Inside, the “Planes Through the Ages” exhibition provided a fascinating insight into the aviation history of Greenham Common, particularly its pivotal role from the 1960s through to the 1980s. The displays were brought to life by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteers, whose passion clearly resonated with everyone present.
After taking in the exhibition, the group enjoyed a relaxed light lunch before heading out for a gentle 4.5-mile walk around Greenham Common, now returned to its natural state. Expertly led by Paul Hickmott, the walk offered a chance to reflect on the area’s transformation, with good weather accompanying us though with the occasional gusty reminder of the exposed landscape.
Returning to the Control Tower, a welcome cup of tea and an ice cream rounded off the day perfectly, giving everyone the chance to unwind and chat.
Our sincere thanks go to everyone at Greenham Control Tower for their warm welcome, enthusiasm, and dedication in making the visit so enjoyable. It was a day that captured exactly what the Kennet Valley Group is all about great cars, great company, and memorable experiences.
