TRs Brave the Chill at a Busy Basingstoke Festival of Transport

Whilst many Kennet Valley Group members were attending the ever-popular Wallingford Parade, four TRs proudly represented the Group at this year’s Basingstoke Festival of Transport, held in the attractive surroundings of the War Memorial Park. The event unfortunately clashes with Wallingford every year, but KVG always tries to support a variety of events to suit members’ differing interests and preferences and Basingstoke once again proved well worth attending.

On display from the Group were two TR6s, a rare TR250, and a striking TR7 Rally Car replica finished in period British Airways colours, which attracted plenty of attention throughout the day. The variety of cars on the stand showcased the broad appeal and character of Triumph’s sporting range, with visitors constantly stopping to chat, photograph the cars, and share their memories. In the private entries, there was a very rare (1 of 150) pilot project TR8 FHC proudly on display.

The festival itself was another huge success, with an estimated 480 vehicles attending. The displays ranged from classic motorbikes and electric industrial tow tractors right through to enormous commercial trucks, creating a fascinating mix of transport history for enthusiasts and families alike. Despite the noticeably colder weather on the day, the event was extremely well attended, with large crowds thronging the park and creating the busy atmosphere the festival is well known for.

As always, the TRs generated huge public interest. Familiar comments could be heard time and again: “My Dad had one of those!” and “I’ve always wanted one.” It is always encouraging to see how much affection these cars still inspire with the general public, young and old alike.

Although only a small KVG turnout this year, the Group’s presence was certainly noticed, and the event once again demonstrated the enduring appeal of Triumph sports cars wherever they appear.
