Simon Cowling writes (abridged from TR Action #360): Getting a wriggle on was the name of the game during the latter part of August, and also for the months through to October, when our TR’s were spread far and wide across the UK and abroad.
During August, visits were made to the Kings Bromley Treasured Vehicle Show which had a great variety of cars, bikes including a Green Goddess and tractors but no steam. To Norwood Park Classic Car and Motorcycle Show, and finally to our very own TR Register annual Concours D’Elegance at the British Motor Museum. Where Pride of Ownership (TR6) was given to Jim Tulley, with help from Howard Jones, for his immaculate TR6 in Gulf matching colours (see photo of the pair of them with trophy). Incidentally, I’m told that Howard is still recovering from self-inflicted hypothermia from the recent Euro Meet at Hohendroda after driving home from a late-night ferry in a TR3, roof-less, heater-less and long-trouser-less shorts only. And finally at our club meet at the Crispin where 15 of us met to help Chris Thurtle - aka Ninja Turtle celebrates his 58th birthday, well done Chris.
In September, the main attraction was The Euro Meet at Hohendroda, Hessen in Germany which had the company of 16 members from Derbyshire Dales. A few took advantage of what Europe had to offer by extending the trip before and others carried on after to join the TR Duro Experience of Portugal. Closer to home some attended the TR Register East Midland Inter-Group Meet at Birchgrove Garden Centre, the All Triumph Day at the Shuttleworth Aerodrome and The Goodwood Revival (see photo of a member's partner in period dress). Then our doorstep so to speak, was A Triumph of Standards at the Great British Car Journey and the end of season classic car show at Thoresby Park. As you might expect, with two major events aboard and the Isle of Man Festival, smaller than usual groups gathered for our monthly meets at South Wingfield and The Crispin. But with comradery high on the agenda amongst those who enjoy their classics, many joined Chesterfield MG Club for their Goodnight Sweetheart Road Run which covered a 65 mile scenic drive through the Peak District. As it happened it set off and finishing back at the South Wingfield Social Club.
And finally, into the first half of October. Our last run of the season organised by Ian Walker and Pete Callender, featured 12 cars again setting off from the South Wingfield Social Club with an interim stop at Millers Dale and ending up for lunch at our other monthly venue the Crispin at Great Longstone, what a well engineered run. The weather was kind and fun was had by all. After that our first monthly meet was again at the South Wingfield Social Club where 16 of us met to enjoy each other’s company and to comment upon how the nights were drawing in and the evenings getting chillier.
With members spread right across our region, we continue to host two Club Nights per month and your raiding parties are most welcome, so please let us know if you intend to join us and also if you’re planning a tour in our area.
As many of you may have noted, I’m on a bet with our group leader to include some of his sayings into each edition. Of course a saying is any concise expression that is especially memorable because of its meaning or style. A saying often shows a wisdom or cultural standard, having different meanings than just the words themselves. I’ll let you decide which if any of those are applicable.
