Derbyshire Dales (December 2025): Pie & Peas Supper, Festive Gatherings, and Rallying

Simon Cowling writes (abridged from TR Action #361): With low temperatures, shorter days, significant precipitation and the dreaded winter gritting, the winter months are not much fun for a TR or its owner. But, what a difference the mention of Henderson’s Relish makes. Phil and Jenny flew in from Canada to pick up their local butchers award-winning pies for our annual Pie and Pea supper. Held 12 November at the South Wingfield Social Club, getting a wriggle on was the name of the game as 47 members had to remain calm and queue for this gourmet delicacy.

On 25 November, 27 of us met at the Crispin Inn for another cosy night with a roaring fire, which many of us didn’t wish to leave. Christmas Carols were sung with the Alfreton Male Voice Choir on 10 December, when 28 of us joined locals at The South Wingfield Social Club. The abundance of mince pies being our just reward.

Irma, again excelled with the planning and delivery of our annual Pre Christmas Lunch at Oakhill, Cromford. When on the 14 December a warm Derbyshire welcome was once again extended to 26 of us. The food surpassed our expectations and much merriment was had. Special thanks to Dave and Sarah for picking up Dave and Val Sygrove who I know enjoyed everyone’s company and best wishes.

For most of us November is when we start planning the winter hibernation and maintenance of our TRs. Well not for Ruth Birkin. Back in May, she responded to a Facebook post from Colin Smith who was looking for a co-driver for the Roger Albert Clark Rally in his Vauxhall Astra. So, something completely different from competing in Historic Regularity Rallies in her TR4. With just four single-venue events under her belt, no experience of forest stages or using pace notes, she took on the challenge. So, no pressure then. The 2025 Rally took place 20th to 24th November and after a gruelling five days across three nations and more than 300 gravel stage miles, they completed what is widely regarded as the longest and toughest stage rally in the UK in over 30 years. Finishing 108 th overall and 27 th in the Open class was a fantastic achievement. Incidentally Roger Clarke drove the iconic TR7 V8 for BL during the 1980 season but had limited success.

And finally, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.
